A little time capsule from 1982. This is how we disseminated info before t'interwebnet. Fanzines, snailmail & phones. Oh, back in the day. To get these little tidbits here and there. Now with the 'net, things zip around 2 seconds after the words are spoken. There is SO MUCH info (much of it wrong) to absorb now a days, and I miss those slow news trickles. But in all honesty, I like getting the info fast. At least with the way we do it now, there is no 9 month waiting on an LP that may or may not drop (TYOH any one?).
Of course I say this as we wait for FEEL FLOWS, so what do I know?

Yeah, the AC power socket pictured on the cover of the booklet depicts an American 110/120/60Hz (type A, ungrounded) outlet. Power outlets in Holland are 220/240/50Hz (type C & F) sockets. The voltages/currents/frequencies are different between the two countries, so power converters and filters had to be used to assure that the equipment built in the U.S. was compatible with the power requirements in the Netherlands. All of which underscores what a badly organised excursion the Holland jaunt was: they expected to find suitable housing in Amsterdam... they expected to find suitable studios with free time... and having discovered the latter to be a huge problem, commissioned a new console from scratch without considering the power differences. Buncha amateurs. Sack the manager. So for those reading along, the Holland sessions at BBC 2, Baambrugge, Netherlands lasted from between June 3 to August 15, 1972. * Per AGD, relatively little of the Holland album was actually recorded in Holland - just the basic tracks. The following data, per AFM sheets with dates possibly backdated and not exact, was stolen from the Bellagio site: June - Assume this was 18 day timeframe of troubleshooting that Steve Moffitt and Gordon Rudd did to bring up the equipment(?) July 19 - Holland sessions: "Steamboat" in Baambrugge July 27 - Holland session: "Big Sur" in Baambrugge August 4 - Holland session: "Only With You" and "Funky Pretty" in Baambrugge August 5 - Holland session: "Beaks Of Eagles" and "California" August 16 to August 31 - Concerts in the U.S. to defray the costs of the Holland project. August 24 - Holland session: "The Trader" in Baambrugge August 31 - Holland session: "Leaving This Town" in Baambrugge September 4 - Holland session: "Mount Vernon & Fairway" and "I'm The Pied Piper/Better Get Back In Bed/Magic Transistor Radio/Radio Kingdom" in Baambrugge. Late September to early October: Holland sessions (presumably vocals) at The Village (Village Recorders) studio A, Los Angeles. October 9 - Holland session: album assembled and mastered at The Village in Los Angeles. November 28 - Holland session: "Sail On, Sailor" in Los Angeles. December 4 - Holland session: revised album mastered (side 1 only) at The Village in Los Angeles. January 3, 1973 - Holland album released. Meanwhile, "Marcella/Hold On, Dear Brother" single was released on June 26, '72; Spring album released in July '72.

The last Holland session actually held in Holland was on August 15th (listed above as the 5th): all the "Baambrugge" sessions after that have to be wrong, as the band was back in the US on tour, as Mikie notes.

Yeah, I edited the August 15th date to included the September 4 date to record the "album's surprise", but will edit it back to say August 15 as the end of recording in Baambrugge. I'm thinking the picture above with Carl, Mike, Audree, Annie, and Marilyn closely coincided with the release of the Marcella single around late June(?).

It’s the Dutch single they’re holding in their hands. It charted in the Dutch tip parade on Aug 6th, and charted in the Dutch Top 40 on September 3rd, highest spot being #20 two weeks later.

Marcella (released late June w/o picture sleeve in the U.S.) didn't even make the Billboard Hot 100 or chart anywhere else, but went to #20 in the Netherlands. I was reading that The Boys were amused while they were recording in the Baambrugge studio - they could tell Dutch people were approaching outside the door (usually asking for autographs) by hearing wooden shoes on the concrete walkway.

Here's a snippet from www.beachboys45.nl/Neth-statistics%20charts.htm. It's shows the BB singles that charted in the Dutch Top 40 (or not) from the early 70s. There's a few surprises...
Although with hindsight, it's not that surprising the BB decided to play Student Demonstration Time at the Grand Gala Du Disque on February 25th. 1972. It had been a hitsingle the months before.

Thanks, Andrew! Something interesting to read this evening.
Now that WAS an interesting read. His recollections on his dismissal sound plausible to me. And His memories on the Western Justice album are pretty much in line with what I've read in a few 1975 interviews with him, although not that detailed. And there's "Burlesque" again. He must have been really impressed with that song, even mentioning it 10 years later (just like in one of the 1975 interviews I have to translate)

Has any hard core fan ever been out to Baambrugge, to see if this building is still there ? bit like Beatles fans visiting Abbey Road Not for that reason but on a trip with a carpenter to some centre looking for tiles. If it was this one ( www.pietjonker.nl), it's at #23, just up the road. I've still got the paperwork somewhere. I'll look it up. Edit: Beautiful topic, by the way. I particularly admire your dedication, SMiLE-Holland.

I vaguely recall reading years back that the building no longer exists. Will check.
Edit: yup, just as I thought - it's not there and hasn't been for at least 20 years.

It's further away from the centre of Baambrugge than the site of BBC 2. (The street numbers descend as the road heads north towards Abcoude.) And yes, damn shame it went the way of the Hawthorne home.

Time for a new chapter?
Here's Mike Love's visit to The Netherlands, promoting the 15 Big Ones album
15 Big Ones promotion, August 1976
During the second half of August Mike took the opportunity to promote the 15 Big Ones album in a few European countries. In Keith Badman’s book one gets the impression that he solely visited the U.K. where he was interviewed by several journalists, among which at least one from The Netherlands. But based on some Dutch articles one can conclude that it was more than that.
First, Mike didn’t just visit the U.K.. An article in Het Parool from August 21st specifically mentions that Mike Love also visited The Netherlands for a few hours to promote the new album, based on the article’s date probably the 19th or 20th.
Second, another short article (source unknown unfortunately) also makes mention of Mike visiting (or being lost in, if one has to believe the author) France. If this was for promotional reasons, isn’t clear though. Based on that article, Mike apparently had another reason to visit Europe, France specifically, and that was related to (Transcendental) meditation. So Mike’s reason to visit Europe most likely was a combination of both, although his heart seems to have been more into TM than 15BO.
And to close this chapter, here's some pictures that were taken during this (lunch) meeting with the Dutch press, probably taken at the Amsterdam Pullitzer Hotel.

Mike was at the Carlton Tower Hotel in London on August 25, 1976 at 6 PM to meet the press and show film footage of the July 3 Anaheim show-which featured Brian. He then flew home to be onstage on August 26 in Saratoga.

To my best knowledge, "Marcella" was never formerly anything other than "Marcella".
Are you referring to Badman's remark that it was formerly titled "One Arm Over My Shoulder"?
Well dang... I just got hold of a Dutch interview with Carl Wilson from (probably) February 26th 1972 in which he specifically mentions a song called "One Arm Over My Shoulder"... and the interviewer got to hear a demo of it...
I assume a translation is welcomed?
