Just wrapped up an amazing 2 and a half hour Q&A with Alan and Mark on the Discord. Some great revelations in there. Expect a transcription here courtesy of Lucakerman and SaltyMarshmallow soon. (I initially posted this in the shoutbox, and shortly after the shoutbox disappeared... )

So...............no heads-up warnings this was coming for the non-Discord participants here?

We didn't want the server to be overwhelmed with new users trying to figure out Discord.

It was great that they were willing to spend so much time with us. One of my longtime questions was finally answered, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

Also Alan and Mark are open to Q&A's over there in the future. I'll make sure to post about them here shortly before they happen. For this first one I wanted to make sure it went as smoothly as possible.

Many thanks Salty and Lucakerman for making that available for sharing. Some good info in the responses which will nevertheless, I’m sure, inspire just as many additional questions.
I saw a brief part of the Discord q&a as it was happening last night, thanks to an alert on my cellphone – as did, I expect, everyone who’s registered there. I didn’t join in though as I had a pan of bubbling marmalade to watch.
It looked to be extremely well managed; I liked the way superfluous chitchat disappeared quickly to allow the flow of genuine questions and answers to flow pretty smoothly.
Gotta admit, Discrd’s pace can be tough for an ol’ fart like me to keep up with!

Thanks a lot for the transcription! I really enjoyed the story about the fragment at the end of CIFOTM... a bootleg of a bootleg After reading all of this, I think the next copyright release will be very important, so the percentage that it can come out in a boxset increases!

"What does Brian Wilson smell like?"
There's always one fuckwit, isn't there ?
Superb Q&A, congrats to all concerned.

Very interesting stuff and kudos to them for agreeing to it.
A shame that so little seems to have survived from the 1974 era though...

Great stuff, thanks for posting. Though the status of the Durrie Parks tapes is pretty frustrating. Why would anyone hoard such material?

Thank you dickrising and saltymarshmallow for your work and for sharing. I enjoyed that very much. Maybe we could get Alan and Mark to stop by the Endless Harmony Forum occasionally to address some selected questions.
From the above Q & A, the one project that I would love to see/hear, but might be a little down the line, would be the 1976/77 Brian's Back comp. That was a fascinating and productive period.
I wish Mark and Alan would've answered the part of the question about why the 1995 sessions fell apart. I've read a lot of speculation but it would've been nice to hear from two guys more "in the know".

Hopefully the derpage at the very end doesn't discourage Mark and Alan from doing something like that again.
I've resisted the urge to purchase the digital only packages, but I think I'll make an exception for the Sunflower - Holland era releases.

A shame that so little seems to have survived from the 1974 era though... And that may very will be due to the mid-'80s Caribou fire.

I'll likely break down and get the live stuff from 1964 and 1965. I'll admit, I'm less interested in session material from 1967-69. Can you purchase tracks individually?

On most download stores, you can. That's good. There are a couple tracks I wouldn't mind downloading and burning to a CDR, but I don't think I need the whole collection.

I strongly suggest it At the end of the day, session stuff and alternate versions don't do a lot for me. As much of a Floyd geek as I am, I never splurged on the Immersion sets. And I never bought either the Pet Sounds box sets.

“I would loooooove to do a "Brian's Back" set covering 1976-1977. 15 Big Ones through the MIU Sessions”
I would be incredibly ecstatic to hear this

Just had to say to kids:- Even if you don't like outtakes, believe me you have to hear these releases. They are AMAZING.

I've edited this to include a few more answers that were left out along with all the usernames so it's a less confusing read. There was a lot of conversation between these answers (and a lot us mods telling people to slow down for a minute with the questions), so full context may be missing in places. This is just the "best-of" reel. Personal highlights: - The Child is Father of the Man chorus vocals do exist on the multitrack! (first chorus anyway, but it's a shame they weren't in the backing vocals montage)
- The Great Shape fragment is from Mark managing to record a few seconds on his phone and then slipping it onto an official release years down the line as a hidden track. We don't deserve these guys.
- They've pitched a Friends remix and a 1965 sessions set
- Alan wants to do a Brian's Back set!
- The Child is Father of the Man mono backing track edit didn't make it onto the Smile Sessions because of Teeter Totter Love. Phenomenal. Sadly the other JD tracks haven't been found.
- A Sunflower set will hopefully have a more thorough approach to a capella/backing track mixes for every song in the vein of the Pet Sounds Sessions (if Capitol let them)
- The Don Goldberg tapes are legit (Sweet and Bitter, Out in the Country, Fading Love Song), and he actually visited the studio a few years ago
- Yet more unused Fairy Tale material - there's a long piano section preceding Better Get Back in Bed with the Lazy Lizzie verse music, and "Pa Let Her Go Out" does exist, apparently a missing piece of the story given the lyrics referencing the prince character. 2022 or bust.
Also, the missing Inside Pop footage... this makes me feel really sad.

Can anyone explain why the SIP files won't last 50 years? Were they recorded only on digital?

The Don Goldberg tapes are legit (Sweet and Bitter, Out in the Country, Fading Love Song), and he actually visited the studio a few years ago Only “Sweet & Bitter” was directly acknowledged. But it does make me more hopeful about the other tracks.
