I used to think this was cheesy crap when it first came out and now I love it. Best song on the album along with Givin' You Up and One More Night Alone. I don't think anybody in their right mind has forgotten Carl.

Nah, no Beach Boy fan will ever "forget" Carl. Hell, after he passed I stopped regularly attending Beach Boys concerts (especially when Al was sacked from the band as well) because of his death.
But I know I'm not alone in wishing Carl got to be around when the Beach Boys' revival of sorts as an iconic and important band started to cement. When he passed away half of the band's catalog remained dormant and out of print, almost completely forgotten by the public and even the band themselves, and the only "new" music that the Beach Boys would offer was a lame country music tribute album that came and went as a marginal footnote.
But things seemed to change dramatically for the band after Carl's passing with the group's catalog restored and even appreciated by the public. Not to mention a mostly great reunion for the band's 50th anniversary. I'd like to believe that Carl would be glad to see the band getting the treatment and respect they deserved.

It is amazing that people still tip their hat to both Carl and Dennis. With Carl, he was actually running the band for decades. You have to give him credit for taking risks going on some of the TV sitcoms to keep their name out there almost as a continuous revival. Just like the exile mid 60s they went on the road, and brought the music to the fans, wherever they could. And, yes the band does not look the same but I'd say massive homage is paid to both Carl and Dennis with rare footage and piped in tracks in the live context so that the younger fans get an intro to their work. I think he/they would be happy, knowing that the music endured and has become part of the culture. Losing them was a big punch to the gut. I can think of no delicate way to express that.

Carl just wasn't interested in being in the glare of the spotlight-he was kind of like George Harrison-a reluctant star-he wanted to play music and then go spend time with his friends and family and have a nice dinner and some wine. Other than that one bad period-late 1976-78, he managed to keep his excesses under greater control than his brothers but that control also meant that he seldom seemed really to go for it-meaning he was kind of calm/unassuming all the time-and sometimes you need to show off a little to get the attention. As some of you said-he was a man of mystery-unlike Dennis and Brian (both of whom made public spectacles of their personal lives at times)...he kept his private life private...the amount of info you can find about the ups and downs of his first marriage or his personal relationship with Murry or his private struggles with his brothers...or his relationship with his second father-in-law Dean Martin...are pretty thin. He kept it all hidden. Yeah-it would be cool if his wives and kids made a documentary about him....but I guess that would invade that privacy that he guarded when alive.
