I could have posted this in the Baambrugge topic, but apart from the 1972 picture it's actually more a general question that deserves it's own thread. Whatever happened to Russ Mackie? What do we know of him. And - assuming he's still among the living - what is he doing now? Did he ever share his knowledge or memories on his association with the Beach Boys? And do even know how he looks?
Reason I ask, is just read one of the old Dutch fanzines, and stumbled on a (unfortunately deteriorated) picture with a summary of names. Although the picture is in bad quality, it's clearly another picture of the August 1972 farewell party in Scheveningen, The Netherlands. From another angle, so Carl and Annie for instance can't be seen (and are therefore not mentioned). But the two unknown figures are on it, albeit both faces being unrecognizable. And they are named "Diane Rovell" and "Russ Mackie"!
On the other picture below one can see these two clearly. Until now the only 'names' I had, were 'two studio musicians', from one of the newspaper articles I found of it. Didn't really make sense to put them there in the middle, but that's the info I had.
Now, as far as the left one being Diane - I have doubts about it. He/she doesn't look like her imo (correct me if I'm wrong though). But the guy on the right.... could that be Russ? It would make sense him being on the picture, like Jack, being one of the associates (better than to pick at random 2 anonymous studio musicians). But I have never seen a picture of him before.
So I tried to google a bit on that name. Which hardly helps. Exactly one link with picture shows up.
On this page it is said that the guy shown here (in 1962) is Russ Mackie (then called Russ Macke, and also called Russell Macke). At the time trying to make it in the music business, with Jack Rieley (!!!) being his manager! That's a story worth investigating as well. But for now the main question is: check both pictures (early 60's and Aug. 1972). Are these two the same guy? The jaw line / facial expression looks a bit similar, but it's hard to say really.
Anyone here knows?

Beach Boys Farewell party, August 1972
Update: another ‘unknown person’ discovered. The guy standing left of Annie is indeed Russ Mackie. Confirmed by the former president of the Dutch Beach Boys Appreciation Society (1971-74). He briefly met him earlier that year. So that leaves the other guy standing between/behind Marilyn and Russ. I tend to believe now it is another associate of the group (and not an anonymous studio musician) But who? (Jon Parks? Stephen Moffitt?)

Nope, not Machiel. There’s more pictures of him in my archive. Doesn’t look like him.

Might the intrepid petsite , to name just one, have the appropriate information tucked away somewhere? It's certainly a fascinating time and place, particularly when it's one's country of residence.

Skipping the Jon Parks option for now…
Let’s narrow it down to known BB associates first, that were mentioned in Andrew Doe’s list on page 2 of the Baambrugge topic.
- Russ and Carole Hayes (Jack's secretary and spouse) - Amsterdam > I’m assuming that this is Russ Mackie… - Steve Moffit (chief engineer) - Jon Pardner (engineer) - Thom Gellert (engineer) - Gordon Rudd (engineer)
And now I hope to get some hits on Google….

According to the Holland booklet as reproduced in Abbott's Back to the Beach, these were "his [Jack's] secretary Carole Hayes and her husband". So unless I'm somehow misreading it, that Russ would be Russ Hayes (the spouse). I see that same source (on page 80 in my edition) lists a Jon Parker, not Pardner. And the Holland booklet ( here) spells it Parder! Still, it also mentions a Bobby Ficher... I think I'll trust AGD on this!

Two Russ’s… could very well be.
And I also read the name ‘Jon Parder’ somewhere.

I also see in the booklet that Gordon Rudd's firm was called Clover Systems. And it's still going strong: cloversystems.designscience.info/aboutus/I also found this, with some new names thrown in [ Source]:

So now we have Parks, Parker, Parder and Pardner. What to believe? Reminds me of that Jack R. thread at Smiley where his surname was spelled Riley, Reiley, Rielly and Reilly as well as Rieley.

From the Holland booklet:
The scatter-ees were Brian Wilson, his wife, two children, sister-in-law and housekeeper; Dennis Wilson with wife and child; Carl Wilson with wife, two children, mother, brother-in-law, housekeeper and two dogs; Mike Love with wife, two kids and a maid; Al Jardine with the same as Mike; Ricky Fataar with wife and in-laws; Blondie Chaplin and girlfriend. For starters.
Then there was chief engineer Steve Moffitt with secretary and son; additional engineers Gordon Rudd and wife, Jon Parder and girl; and Thom Gellert and admirers; Russ Mackie, the group's traveling attache: Jack Rieley, Brother Records' senior officer and the man at whom the buck stops, his secretary Carole Hayes and her husband, plus Jack's dog. And not least, Bill, who sought shelter for all. In the end they were sprinkled through the Netherlands thus: Jack, Russ and Carole in Amsterdam; Carl and Blondie in Hilversum; Brian in Laren; Ricky in Vreeland; Jon and Thom in Haarlem; Gordon in Heemsted; Steve in Assedelft; Mike and Al in Bloemendaal - all converging on a converted barn in Baambrugge. Before the houses were ready, all were put up in hotels. The musicians' houses were each outfitted with rented stereo and piano. They rented nine Mercedes, one Audi, bought three VWs and van. Aging visibly as he speaks, Jack says, "Some day accounting will face a column just called 'Holland.'" Before they obtained their present Amsterdam office, Jack's duplex apartment a furnished summer rental, became Brother Records' European headquarters. The office was set up in the children's room, all ready resplendent with bears, dolls and tables not exceeding one and a half feet in height. A Telex was installed with an obliging Dutch answering service. It handled on the average, three quarters of an hour's messages per day, the printed sheets unfurling like an endless paper towel. So many transatlantic calls were placed that the international operators in Pittsburgh, through whom all such calls are relayed, got wise to the number and noted it to save time.

… and Blondie was supposed to be in the NL ‘with girlfriend’. But according to an interview with in his temporary home in Hilversum he was living there on his own.
As for Dennis: we know he was in the NL for the first few weeks or so. There’s the photo session with him on one of the Amsterdam canal bridges. Probably from those first weeks. Later on he flew in when required for sessions, when he lived on the Canary Islands.

Well this would seem to be the background in the top picture of Dennis. That corner building is at the juncture of two Amsterdam canals: Prinsengracht (with the three-arched bridge) and Leidsegracht (with just one arch, to our right). The sky in the first picture is helpful -- we're looking north-west along Prinsengracht, so it makes an angle to the right just beyond the bridge: Dennis is closer to us, off to the left of the above pictures. He seems to have moved back along his bridge for the two lowest pictures in the previous post. I know -- no life!

But you saved me a lot of trouble here 😁 Thanks!

But you saved me a lot of trouble here 😁 Thanks! You're welcome, Klaas. It's great to be able to do something in return for all the hard work you've done on our behalf. What I would really like to do now is put a name to the bridge on which Dennis is standing. It's somewhere in this list ( www.bruggenvanamsterdam.nl) but my brain is still hurting from finding the location so it will have to wait!

The bridge nearest us (seen from Keizersgracht) may well be the one Dennis is standing on: It used to have a name but these days has the prosaic designation "Brug 44". [ Source]

So, it’s on the corner of Keizersgracht and Leidsegracht. Seen from bridge 44, we’re looking at the building on the corner (either right or left of Dennis) with the address Keizersgracht 419. The location probably wasn’t much of a coincidence. The location is only a 11 minute walk from (or to) the then Beach Boys office in Amsterdam, located at Tweede Helmersstraat 28.

It’s Steve Fataar sitting between Jack Rieley and Blondie. Brother/Edries Fataar is on the right. As for the other picture; as documented above this is at the Beach Boys Farewell party, August 3rd 1972 at the pier in Scheveningen (The Hague). A few weeks before they returned to California.

O, yes, Dennis definitely moved on to the Canary Islands. But he stayed in the NL for the first few weeks or so. So either the pic was taken in those early weeks, or when he was there for a session.
