In response to a couple of posts above: 1). I wish I could get The Honeys in Ecstasy on CD, or at least three tracks, the Brian Wilson songs “You Brought It All On Yourself,” and “Go Away Boy,” as well as their version of “Be My Baby,” dedicated to Brian’s love of the song. I’ve got the vinyl album somewhere in my garage. View Attachment2). I bought The Beach Boys CD singles box set, but I never listen to it. It’s a pain in the butt to keep changing CDs every five minutes. Why not just put all the songs on one or two CDs? It's a shame that damn near everything these girls did is near impossible to get on CD for a reasonable price. The Spring Plus CD goes for more than original press of Spring. And for less than the going price of the CD, I was able to get a sealed original copy of the Rhino LP. I'd love for it all to get a modern reissue, but I'm sure money is the main object there. If Fred Vail can crowdfund his album, then why can't I get the internet to fund a 7CD Spring box set!?

Some years ago I did try to reach Marilyn about the possibility of Cherry Red reissuing the Spring material, and dealt with her husband (whose name I forget). He was very nice and very interested in the reissue of The Many Moods Of Murry Wilson album I did, and he spoke of his fondness for Murry, but there was no interest in the Spring stuff coming out.

Marilyn's husband's name is Daniel Rutherford, who happens to be a big Beach Boys fan. I think Marilyn owns the rights to or at least calls the shots on where the Spring tape(s) are used. Last I heard, Daniel is also in possession of the original Wild Honey stained glass window in a crate somewhere.

I see there's a CD of Ecstasy on eBay for $100. No thanks! The other Honeys and Spring CD are there for a more reasonable price. However, if I'm allowed to post this, these Honeys / Spring CDs are on YouTube. The entire Ecstasy album is available on YouTube. The quality doesn't sound like a CD, though. On the other hand, the two Brian Wilson songs "Go Away Boy" and "You Brought It All On Yourself" are both on YouTube separately in great quality. I have software that extracts the audio from YouTube, and bingo - I just burned a new "CD single" of those two songs.

Is piracy as bad when it's an album that hasn't been in print for (in my case at least) my entire lifetime and then some. Buy your own copy where you can, but unofficial sources are the only way to hear a lot of this for many. I'm not sure of the complete legality of songs uploaded to YouTube, but they do include commercials and use the proceeds to pay royalties to the artists and composers. YouTube will take anything down if the owners complain. So it's not unreasonable to assume that this material is at least somewhat sanctioned for us to hear. I also notice that a few Honeys songs are available for streaming on Apple music, but not their albums. I wonder why not? Just about everything is there.

The owner of the copyright can also claim the video (or Youtube can do so automatically), which ensures all revenue from adverts goes to the copyright holder.

Those are predators making money off the artistry of others with “adaptations” of copyrighted studio releases. One exception is the SIP remix/remake because only that album needed a fresh look and that is pretty universal. Some think it is ok to remix and monetize. If a band - any band, wanted their “creative” versions - they would hire them. They are not generic, multi-generational commercials which I would not generally mind such as airlines, vehicles, or sports equipment - they are demographically age-targeted, but often never ending big pharma commercials, peddling drugs because of the age of the band, presuming “boomer” status, and not necessarily the age of the listener. The official term is ageism. And I don’t include YouTube performances - I mind that less because it indirectly benefits the artist - they are actually getting some free publicity - and are an indicator of the type of performance in pretty much real time and is a path to ticket sales for live shows which is a good thing. Chicago - The Band, encourages this kind of uploading. It must confer a benefit.

In most cases, Youtube automatically detects the use of copyrighted content and so all revenue generated by the video goes straight to the record company. This applies to covers too. Youtube automatically detects the use of the melody. Examples of such claims are attached.

So, what you are saying is that the advertisers are compensating the artists, indirectly, through this tech/software? But on some level the content is still monetized to the channel owner - many of whom refer to themselves as “content developers” - it would not be worth their time - and it can be very creative to apply a fresh set of eyes on any creative work but you gotta ask the owner. This is something that the schools should be taking up during computer courses so students don’t use creative skills to appropriate the work of another.

Fair point, but they are a lot more on top of such things nowadays. YouTube ads have become almost ubiquitous only more recently too.

I'm not paying it. But, actually, $10 a month is not bad for access to just about every song, film, TV show, and video ever made, commercial free. Another way of looking at it is, for $10 a month you can watch any number of hours, 24 hours a day, and you don't have to watch commercials. I'm willing to pay that for streaming channels like commercial free Netflix, Disney +, BritBox, and Paramount - so why not YouTube?

Nor I - but have used YouTubeTV for several years and think that the ad free YouTube version should be a fringe benefit of that subscription, but I am less than enamored by their recent move to dump local sports broadcasts after a big hike in price - and not because I watch local sports, but because my kids do. I’m thinking of moving to fubotv that still has the local sports networks in their lineup.

To be picky (what, me ?!), Brian had nothing whatsoever to do with the Nodaens track other than Dave Nowlen basing it on the chord progression of an unreleased (and likely unrecorded) Survivors song "A Joy Ride Cruise".

Looking over the listing on that Early Works CD, the running order kind of replicates the DUMB ANGEL releases Vol. 16-18. Wonder if that is where they got these tracks (except a few that weren't on there).
