Thanks My comments put off the older demographic who think The Beach Boys can do know wrong. I get it, when you’re a fan of something for decades, you will do your best to defend basically everything they do, no matter how ridiculous. I completely understand the mindset, I have my own biases as well. but not for the Beach boys, I think that they were great at making amazing, emotional, absolutely moving music... and literally nothing else. From all The Beach Boys fans I’ve talked to outside of message boards, they all say that the catalog is one of the most miss-managed Legacy catalogs they’ve seen. Albums not accounted for, incomplete single boxes, confusingly named compilations, things appearing and disappearing off of streaming services, it’s a complete mess. Even The Beach Boys have acknowledged it, most recently when they just told some rich business dude to start making all the decisions, because they don’t know how. Which comment proves our young friend has utterly failed to comprehend anything whatsoever about BB fandom past and present. He really doesn't have a clue. First of all, I’m not your “little friend.” Secondly, I know all about beach boys fandom, because I’m a beach boys fan. But that’s the thing. I’m a beach boys fan, not a Beach Boys Stan.

OK, let's lose the personal attacks, negative insinuations, and name calling. Let's stay on track with the premise of the threads and not get personal with fellow posters (unless you're complimenting them or referring to them in a positive way). OK? Starting riiiiiiiiiiiiight now! Thanks in advance.

Glad to see you are back posting - but I think there is a huge difference between "little friend" and "young friend" - new (young) BB fans have an advantage many of those "contemporary" (I'm a 2nd gen fan) - they got to experience Brian, live, during their shorter but more recent fan years. Those 2nd gen fans (Pet Sounds era) did not ever see Brian on tour, for at least 20 years. That is longer than most rock band careers. What might be hard to understand is that those 60s-70s fans (the ones I know, anyway) take things in stride and "don't sweat the small stuff" as they have been living life alongside the music. They (most) are not going to lose it over releases, especially after waiting 37 years for Smile. They just aren't - they just chill out and enjoy the extensive body of work. Are they a hot mess and their work is not arranged or cataloged in a 2021 standard? Maybe it appears to you that it is a hot mess - but - so what? Most fans are just not into the detailed minutiae. If they are on a forum such as this one - maybe they are the fans who are into detail. They outlasted The Beatles and out toured The Stones. And despite the devastating losses of Carl and Dennis, kept the music alive in the performance context. It has been a marathon - not a sprint. So, if you try and sit where other 50-60 year fans are, and look at this from their perspective, it might be a little bit easier to unpack this dynamic. I do appreciate young and passionate fans.

Seriously, are we doing this? Let's put the master tapes down and back away. Sheesh, people can disagree. Not to repetitively bring it up, but Bob Hanes and I often disagreed. He never wanted to give Mike Love an INCH and I would push back. I remember when SMiLE was performed in 2004. He said "Brian's finally used Tony's lyrics! He is done playing games. He is doing the song as it should have been done!"
We went round and round on that. Mike's lyrics are superior to what Tony had. Tony's were probably just a sketch and not honed. But Mike came up with the hook and I love his words. Bob didn't want to hear it.
And to reiterate what I said before, we DO expect things. Not entitled, but we as fans do expect something. Let me give you an instance of what I mean.
Back in the late '70s early 80's people were getting tired of all of the retreads with the Beatles releases. When that Beatles box came out in 1978 it had a Rarities LP. People demanded that it be released separately which was totally against what EMI said it would do. They gave in and finally did release it as a stand alone LP. The US was going to do the same until Randall Davis at CAPITOL said that the tracks weren't rare. He was given the job to put together a true rarities LP which he did a great job on, considering what he had to work with. Then as the release was about to happen, CAP sent out telex's (the forerunner of faxes and email) to all of their sales offices saying DON'T SPEND A LOT TIME to promote this package. We aren't going to spend any money promoting it etc etc. They felt it was just for those damn crazy fans and who cares about them. The damn thing sold more than they ever thought and radio stations were having issues getting copies because CAP didn't want to send out promos to save money. Who knew the crazy fans acutally wanted something like this? As Billie Eilish says.....DUH.
See, I think that is what gets lost with the people in sales at these labels. If the BB singles box didn't sell well, it is because they over thought it and overpriced it. It should have been a three CD set like the 1993 one and it would have sold better. We just want the music. The packaging was nice, but a little much.

Tony confirmed to me in 1998, face to face, that his lyrics were just a placeholder until he, or someone else, came up with something better. Sorry, coach.

AGD, in this same vain, did Brian sub EGO in for I KNOW THERE'S AN ANSWER in any of his PS concerts. He didn't here, but I thought I heard he might have. Do you know (or does anyone else know) if he did?

Not at any of the 20-odd gigs I went to 2002-2016. I think. Memory isn't what it used to be, but I'm pretty sure I never heard it sung as "Ego". Other may have different (= better) recollections.

Thanks. I didn't know if he did or not. I know SO many people wanted him to as a middle finger to the Beach Boys. Always sides. Just ever wandered if it did.
One thing that struck me during the 50th Ann Tour was how excited Darien etc were to play with Mike Love and Bruce. He told me later that was great to be with as many of the original BB as possible. I mentioned that it was too bad Carl wasn't still around but how D. did such a great job with Darlin'. Thought he was going to start crying. He is SUCH a great guy!

Darian is just a completely wonderful guy, in all respects. Knows his Hitchcock too. I'm privilged to have spent a fair degree of time with him, and this little anecdote tells you much about the character of the man. Backstage in Birmingham, 2005, fans and band all milling and talking. The road manager announces it's time to get on the bus, and is roundly ignored. He does this maybe three, four more times, and finally Darian turned to him and said, with as much heat as I've ever seen from him (that is, not much) "We're talking with our friends". "Our friends". Not "these people", not even "some fans": "our friends"... because it was true. From very early on in the 2002 UK tour, they stopped being Brian's band and became friends, but it was hearing him say that that really brought it home. Not seen BW since 2016, and dammit I miss them.

They can't believe they are on the inside. Of course, we all know, they have the talent to be there. McCartney has commented on how brilliant they are.

If I can also be entitled for one minute, I'd like to add my name to the growing list of people here who crave a mono Honeys singles collection set. C'mon, Capitol, there's at least five of us now!!

Re: Brian singing the "Ego" lyrics rather than the "Answer" lyrics, he did it on the second 2002 UK tour but not the first (I just checked audience recordings of two of the gigs I was at to confirm this -- "Answer" is sung on the London show on 28/1/02, while "Ego" is on the Manchester show from the thirteenth of June). I have a vague memory of him using both sets of words at one show or another -- the "answer" lyrics during the main song, but singing "Hang on to your ego" during the tag -- but if he did it's not on anything I have a recording of (unless it was on the live DVD, which contained performances from both tours...)

That here in the states we have been promised a Brian Wilson Productions CD set and never ever got one? How easy would it now be to do a digital download? I mean, its past time. I am only writing about this today because I was making a little comp to play in the car and we still don't have the original mono mixes of several of the Honeys' songs. It's gotten to the point of being past crazy. We have had the following from Japan and the EU but no where else.
This thing slipped out in Japan a few months ago: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/V-A-EARLY-WORKS-OF-BRIAN-WILSON-1962-1967-JAPAN-2-MINI-LP-CD-C94-/274481946584Track list: DISC 1 1. That's a damn good Brian Wilson Productions comp right there. Best one yet by a country mile. I don't see the Honeys' "Goodnight, My Love" on there, which Brian supposedly produced, but maybe they probably had to take one out to make all the songs fit on one CD. No biggee though, that pretty much covers all the released singles! Man, covering all the royalties for this thing........I guess if it's pressed in Japan they don't have to pay up? Kinda like a bootleg?

In response to a couple of posts above: 1). I wish I could get The Honeys in Ecstasy on CD, or at least three tracks, the Brian Wilson songs “You Brought It All On Yourself,” and “Go Away Boy,” as well as their version of “Be My Baby,” dedicated to Brian’s love of the song. I’ve got the vinyl album somewhere in my garage. 2). I bought The Beach Boys CD singles box set, but I never listen to it. It’s a pain in the butt to keep changing CDs every five minutes. Why not just put all the songs on one or two CDs?
