It’s gotta be tears. It’s a fine song on its own, but it doesn’t exactly fit the happy, sunshine filled mood the rest of the album is going for. Also, opening the B side with the slow, negative song when you had soulful old man sunshine right there was such an odd decision. Whatever, sorry Bruce

"Tears..." I won't be missing you. Ha ha! When I first heard Tears, confusion reigned, but over the years I've come to appreciate the sorrowful tale of woe, despite the melodramatics, and the nice touches Bruce put in there - especially the drums, they're HUGE.

Jeez, that Our Sweet Love might have done better in a 30 second tv advert - it stretches the friendship a tad in full form. “Incense and pretty flowers”

This is likely to raise numerous eyebrows but I voted out "Forever". You see, I've always had slight difficulty with Brian's high weazlings splashed over everything. That gives it the smallest edge over everything else in the voting-off department so far.

A little of it goes a long way in my book. But really, I wouldn't even mention it outside of the Survivor framework. So blame Mr Smith! What I do find fascinating is the one distorted moment in the proceedings (here at 0:48):

I'm going for Window, which I like - and like more than a couple of songs on the other side. I was going for Tears, but I like the Euro-centric feel and I've come to appreciate the song over the years.

It is Tears for me. I find both of Bruce's tracks on Sunflower to be my least favorite.

I was going to go with Cool Cool Water, but I might as well go with the tide here and vote Tears.

First time I heard the track - which I think is orchestrally dreamy.

The line is "Pretty things like incense and flowers", and the song's about wooing, romance, seduction and foreplay at a time when you were still a twinkle in your dad's eye I'll refrain from posting the Aussie version of foreplay because it's become rather a cliche, and I'm reasonably sure that it's possibly not true. Probably.
I've voted for "Tears.." because I'd like to keep Our Sweet Love and At My Window in the game for a while longer. The latter is beyond cute, it's delightful, subtle, clever and dreamy; it's meant to lure you into a tranquil state right up to the line "From their eyes..." when it prods and rouses you with a discordant note that hints at something darker. And Brian gets to speak French-ish - what's not to like?

I have a soft spot for "Tears", as it was the only UK-released 45 (I heard it on the radio at the time) from Sunflower, an album whose existence I only learned of in 2002! It wasn't a great favourite of mine but by then (late 1970) it was clear to me that Beach Boys singles were notoriously eclectic.
Soft spot or not, I fear it will be my next side two choice to be axed.

I'm voting off "Tears in the Morning" because it has one of my least favorite BB lyrics:
So you moved out up to Europe
Up to Europe?! Who talks like that? (Certainly no American I've ever known, myself included.) And with another thirty seconds of brainstorming Bruce could have at least come up with "gone to Europe". (Still not brilliant, but much less awkward.)
If it happened in one of the later verses I wouldn't mind so much. But right at the top of the first verse, just when the song is establishing it's mood and tone? It's like getting hit with a rake just as he's stepping up to the microphone. Drives me nuts every time I hear it -- which is a shame because otherwise it's a very pretty track. Tears indeed.

Bruce lit a candle in Tears In The Morning - which due to the song's elimination we shall promptly extinguish - the Tribe has spoken via 13 of 24 votes.
At My Window has a minor target on it's back attracting 6 votes, I hope it can recover some lost ground.
Thanks for a fabulous round with some great gameplay, factoids and fun discussion.
Heat 3 is set to get toasty!!! Be back soon!!!

Welcome back to the BB Lifestyle Channel where we quickly move into Heat 3 of The Beach Boys Survivor - Sunflower.
Time to run the rod across Tribe Side A again, which has already lost Got To Know The Woman, and is set to be down another gem by the end of this heat.
I'll break with tradition and let you know what I'm going with - It's About Time. Great track and touching on psych with that wigged out guitar shatter of a lead and hippie background vocals. But the recording is HOT (levels are too high) and not as well pieced together as the other offerings. To me it sounds like it was dubbed in from a different master - perhaps the upcoming episode of Stephen Despers' study guide will provide some illumination.
And, on an album lauded for it's sonics, the old sore thumb thing applies.
Let's go, have fun and don't forget about the hidden immunity idol - it may save your favourite song's bacon or fakeon.

I've grown to love every song on Sunflower. Bruce's songs, as great as they were,
stood out as different. "At My Window" is too great on vocals for me to chop away
just yet. I'll vote off "Forever" before considering "Our Sweet Love". I was only
eighteen when I first heard it. Yet to fall in love for the first time. The song is one
of hopes and dreams. And one of Carl's best vocals, ever. My favorite on side two.
Maybe it's the hippie that still lives inside me at 68. Maybe it's because of the one
I married 3 February 1980. That is a sweet love that is still going on. The song has
been a part of my life for so long. Won't be voting for that. Hope you don't either.
Guess if I have to pick it's "Tears In the Morning". As with most of Bruce's songs, it
seems more of a solo track than a Beach Boys number. If they had made this a two
record set, I would have placed it before "At My Window" to open side three.
