Good evening - I welcome you back to all to the tribal playground that is The Beach Boys Survivor.
I've decided to hold various themed series of Survivor, and I'll be retconning our just completed Surfin' Safari Survivor to exist as first cab of the Label Debut Albums series (I'm just waiting for George Lucas to call me back with some pointers).
The second album in the series is Sunflower, which we'll be getting into Post Haste. The rules are relatively similar to the Surfin Safari Survivor, but read closely for some additional information.
- Vote off your least favourite track as per the listing each Heat - Finals and occasional events may require you to vote for your favourite. Read the directions with care. - Feel free to comment, provide insights etc - You may indulge in strategies that may aid the round longevity of your favourite track; as long as those strategies comply with our forum's Rules of the Land - Each Heat, Final or occasional event will remain open for approx 2 days, give or take a couple of hours - depending on my real world priorities de jour - HAVE FUN!
To spice things up, I'll be splitting the album tracks into 2 seperate tribes for voting purposes based on Side A & Side B line-ups of the originally released US pressings. When each tribe is thinned out I will merge the remaining tracks into one tribe for voting.
There will also be an Immunity Idol hidden on this forum - if you find it, post a URL or screenshot here and once verified, you will have the ability to grant 1 round's immunity to any song listed. How you find the idol is up to you.
Let's Play!

Good morning/afternoon/whatever to you, Alan. I'm a stranger in this part of the forum but I just happened to peep cautiously into the Shout Box and noticed your announcement. I voted off "Add Some Music". It's hard to ignore the lyrics on this one and I find them a little cloying. It was a tough decision all the same.

I don't like "Got To Know the Woman", not one bit, and I never have. I don't find it particularly rocking, or funky, or sexy, or tuneful. The other songs on the list are all fine by me. I'm glad to have a relatively easy choice.

You guys are nuts - 'Got to Know The Woman' is a good song! Sunflower needed another rockin' song to mix it up, and Dennis gave it to 'em!
Unlike the wimpy 'Diedre', which I voted off. And where's that other candy-assed song, 'At My Window'? I'd vote that off too.

I’m going with Deirdre for this first round. A little on the syrupy side for my tastes.

Got to Know the Woman, though Deidre is close.

Usually I'd agree that you can have too many soft songs in a row, but when they're as good as they are on this album, I let it pass. "Deirdre" is terrific.

GTKTW is relatively weak, although I dig Mike's descending bass vocals.

Ahh, Sunflower, my favourite group album where everyone gets a chance to shine. There are some great Dennis tunes on here, but this isn't one of them. It doesn't rock, it just plods, and endless repetition of the song's title while ascending through the keys is a poor substitute for a genuine hook. It sounds a bit lazy, like he ran out of ideas and couldn't wait to get out to the beach.
For me, the band's essence has always been melody, harmonies, inventiveness and the ability to produce that spine tingling moment. Sunflower is awash with those qualities but sorry, I can't detect any of them in Got To Know The Woman. Dennis could do much better, and he achieved that with the other songs on this set.

"GTKTW": it's not bad... it's just not good enough.

For the record, I do not dislike Got to Know the Woman. It's just the one I like the least out of this half dozen.

I often find myself thinking that many of the songs on Sunflower are more like cartoons of songs. Not caricatures, but cartoons. So many of them have an over-the-top element that shouldn't work but does.
Just an idle thought from way below sea-level...

The first vote was fairly easy for me, Deirdre. It will get tough after that.

The first vote was fairly easy for me, Deirdre. It will get tough after that. Deirdre is a bit of a conundrum for me. On the surface it’s a bit of a schmaltzy super nice tune, but there’s a killer arrangement in there; great drumming, the nifty little acoustic guitar riffing on the little break before the “baby-1-2-3...” section. Brian is on fire in the backing vocals. I also really like that Bruce’s lyrics here and on Tears were tackling some emotionally deep topics focusing on the effect of distance and separation on family (this one) or lovers (Tears). But does it have the appeal of the more simplistic rock outing of GTKTW and it’s Chicken lickin’ lyrics?

The votes have been cast, the tribe has spoken - Got To Know The Woman does the chicken stage left as the first track removed from Tribe Side A, with 13 of 20 votes.
The remaining tally went to: Deirdre - 4 votes, It’s About Time - 2 votes, Add Some - 1 vote.
Join us soon for another great heat of fun discussion as Survivor - Sunflower continues.

The poll was locked by the time I got here. Doesn't matter, 'cause I wouldn't have picked "Got To Know the Woman"
as weakest on side one. I would have been out-voted.

The votes were 9 against it, then after I posted in support of it, 4 more posters voted against it! Next time I'll shut up! It's OK, we know a good song and this one would never be excluded from a Dennis comp/box.

Dude’s got another better song and a co-write on this side alone - and his tribe 2 offering isn’t too shabby - so it was only a matter of time for Got To.

Will be my next side one vote, as well. Got to look around for the next polling place.

Welcome back to The Beach Boys Survivor(s) and welcome to Heat 2 which finds us eliminating an offering from Side 2 of The gang's 1970 opus and Warner/Reprise debut, Sunflower.
Vote for your least favourite track from the poll listing. Don't forget, there is a hidden immunity idol somewhere on this forum - if you find it, you can play it any heat, but not the Finale. PM me the location if you should stumble across it.
Have FUN!!! Poll closes Thursday 25/02, 3pm GMT +11.

I like all of the songs on Side 2, but I have to go with the opener to vote off in this round.
