Good one, jk. For years I think Culture Club have been underrated, though with '80s pop in general being more respected lately, perhaps that is changing. Culture Club had some really interesting arrangements, especially with background vocals, not to mention obviously catchy hooks.
I heard Vampire Weekend's new pre-album singles, and while I'm usually lukewarm on that band, I really like them. Especially "Harmony Hall." Very pretty tune and good guitar. So this one's for undercover-m, wherever she is.

Hey The Cap'n: I used to juggle their first two albums (never could get into the third) as equally good. But since I discovered the original release of KTBC--which has a completely different running order, omitting the utterly swoony "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" and ending with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" instead of beginning with it-- this is the Culture Club album for me. One difference for me between KTBC and Colour by Numbers is that George sounds scared shitless on the debut, whereas on the second album he's resigned to his life and all the risks involved. Just a personal opinion. And yes... Mari (undercoverm) used to be all over PSF for a while. Still, folks move on and who are we to question why?

More CC. Only this time it's the first in a jk series of tracks that end with a stroke on the gong:

Heard this gorgeous track by The Unthanks on BBC radio this morning. I'd heard them before on Jools's programme--wow! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_UnthanksRegrettably the only other time I've come across the word unthank is in this passage from a J.P. Donleavy novel: "My dear boy, how are you. But let me tell you, before you tell me, how I am. Firstly I am in need of gripe water. Secondly I am bedazzled. Benumbed with befuddlement. Carted off bodily to Unthank. And there pissed on. From a dizzying height. And soon I shall be seen somewhere in Paddington light footed in the rooming hall wearing sunglasses, wielding squash racket and utterly unclothed. Allow me please to have a spoon full of these peas." [ Source]

Besides a really cool original from a friend, Im listening to the awesome jazz-y soundtrack to Cowboy Bepop which is another anime my girlfriend introduced me to recently.

Im listening to the awesome jazz-y soundtrack to Cowboy Bepop which is another anime my girlfriend introduced me to recently. Now that's worth investigating further. I've linked it for late-night, early-morning listening (Boy George and company have earned themselves a little bit of a little rest). Films (probably games as well) are clearly a great way to discover and enjoy music one might otherwise pass by. Thanks for sharing, my friend.

My CB waking-up track this morning was this gem sung by Steve Conte. It's heart-warming to observe the care and attention paid to the music of films and games in this mass-produced world. Love those strings (with a nod to "Bitter Sweet Symphony") and the instrumental workout at c. 2:50.

I like Cole Porter. George Harrison too - he covered Cole's song in, IIRC, his self-titled album. Edit: got message just now by poster who said it's in his 1976 album Thirty Three & 1/3.

Here's another Steve Conte vehicle from the Cowboy Bebop best-of. Real early-hours-of-the-morning-should-have-long-been-in-bed stuff. I can imagine Sting writing and singing this gorgeous song:

The quality of transfer really stands out. You can really appreciate the solid foundation upon which the addictive qualities of the "Authentic Cole Porter Collection" -version was built.

One of my favorite songs, not just by Randy Newman, but overall. I was obsessed with this circa 2000ish as I first got into Newman's music. It's been a while since I listened, but it still holds up for me (which makes sense, it having held up for the three decades or so between its creation and my hearing it in the first place).

Petula Clark, crazy, man, crazy! I was just going to list I KNOW A PLACE. That was going to be followed by a Big Tiny Little vid.

Petula Clark, crazy, man, crazy! I was just going to list I KNOW A PLACE. That was going to be followed by a Big Tiny Little vid. I remember UK DJ Pete Murray blithely announcing Ms Clark on TOTP sometime in the later '60s with the words "Now here's someone who was making hit records before many of you were born!" Oh if looks could kill! The chorus of "Subway" has a vaguely "GOK" feel to it... Good choice there, treatzapiza.

Randy wrote the song for Frank Sinatra and actually got to play it for him in Sinatra's office. Frank's response? "Next."

Listened to Weezer's Pinkerton a lot recently. In the age old Weezer debate of Blue vs Pinkerton, I fall firmly into camp Pinkerton - I think Blue is pretty great too, but the rawer production suits the angry depressed loner lyrics speaks to me more.

I'm currently obsessed with this song from last year:
The lyrics may be a bit controversial, but the music is very good, and I agree with what I've interpreted from the lyrics: satire on current over-abundance of "us" versus "them" mentality out there

Also, I've been listening to Frank Zappa's "Freak Out" a lot lately. I enjoy doo-wop/baroque pop influence, as well as avant-garde music on "Disc 2", to my surprise.
This song might be my favorite right now, along with "How Could I Be Such A Fool".
