In terms of new and refreshing content, it looks a bit 'bling bling' to me and not of much substance. Hmmm! $1830.36 Aussie dollars! for a signed copy. My 'Beach Boys nose sniffer' smells '$$$ Grab'. Oh and my favorite! Vox pops from our favorite artists, Elvis Costello, David Lee Roth, Jimmy Page and many more! I wonder if they'll let me buy two copies? It does look beautifully presented though, I'm sure it'll look great on someone's shelf and become an investment piece. Me? I'm quite happy with the informative reader's 'Becoming The Beach Boys' and 'The Lost Beach Boy' etc etc...

It only goes up to 1980? WTF?

Sorry, had started a thread for this before spotting this one. Closed that and repost thoughts here:
New book coming December, text by Howie Edelson, published by Genesis Publications.
Same esteemed publisher that did the very limited, very expensive Lucky Old Sun-based art “book” with Sir Peter Blake back in the day.
This won’t be cheap!
Howie (according to his own Facebook thread) has conducted interviews and all text (60,000 words, 400 pages); archive interviews supplied by Alan Boyd (presumably from the archive!).
Observation regarding slipcase (sorry, the “handcrafted, cloth-bound solander case, decoratively finished with screen-printing and foil embossing”): it lists Mike, Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al & Bruce (in that order); cover lists Brian, Mike, Al, Dennis, Carl, Bruce (in that order).
There’s no mention on either of Dave, which I found a real surprise, given he was there at the beginning, unlike Bruce, and was a big part of the 50th anniversary reunion tour & album. Stebbins’ book saw him rightly restored to BBs’ history several years ago but maybe that effort has withered away? It’s not like he isn’t still around.
Also no mention of Blondie or Ricky – less of a surprise really, as everyone outside the hardcore fan community overlooks them and their contributions to the band even now, despite the opportunity for the Sail On Sailor set to have righted that wrong. Still, they were full, formal members for a year or three and their creative contributions made a real impact at the time. And they’re still active musicians.
Maybe this is a draft cover and Howie’s already plugging away at the publisher to get these apparent oversights fixed?
Whatever, I’m looking forward to reading it and seeing a wealth of never-before published photographs and more!

It only goes up to 1980? WTF? Well, at least it’ll include the Knebworth gig (my first!)… Guessing they’re drawing a line under the band’s history with Dennis’s departure from the live act? Except that that was September 1983, so no…

Sigh, I wonder if there'll be a paperback edition for us peons. This book looks lovely -- and it's priced completely outside this fan's budget. Maybe the library will have a copy....

It's possible that the preorders are for a limited, signed edition only and that there will be a less-expensive, non-signed, non-deluxe edition published as well. I don't need a fancy slipcase, and I've got plenty of BB-signed stuff already.
John, are you ready to start tracking book price fluctuations? 😁
Another thought: does the 1980 cutoff mean a volume 2 is in the works?
Edit: After some research, it looks like Genesis is only in the business of publishing high-end collectible books. They've still got a Brian Wilson and Peter Blake book available -- also way out of my budget range. If a wider-market version of the BB book becomes available, it might be through another publisher. The point remains that these two books are clearly not aimed at the Beach Boys' fans.

It would've been real interesting to get the members' honest thoughts on the Summer in Paradise/Stars and Stripes efforts! And not PR-friendly plugs for the albums during that era, but from recent interviews. (I'm assuming this book doesn't solely get it's material from articles throughout the years, and they did interviews recently.)

Don’t think there’s any point monitoring price fluctuations on this, as it’s unlikely there’ll ever be any! Don’t think 2p has ever been cut off the TLOS art package, and this product’s in such a limited edition run that it’ll probably sell out regardless. Suspect the only way I and many others will get a feel for what the content’s like is by reading a review in Mojo or Uncut. And, much as I and everyone here would love to see one, I reckon a post-1980 volume 2 is unlikely. TBBs85, Stars & Stripes, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and David Marks of the Beach Boys Salute NASCAR, the 50th anniversary live album… It’d be a tough project to market beyond the hardcore fans. And this hardcore fan wouldn’t be able to afford it.

I am a big fan but no way I’m gonna pay almost a €1000 for a book. What are they thinking 🤔

Seeing a few pages of the book with pictures of rare picture sleeves, and I get the impression they grabbed those of our www.beachboys45.nl website. The Danish and Norway Surfin USA PS’s look awfully similar (seeing the minor imperfections). Not claiming any credits, but - if my presumption turns out to be correct - it would be kind to at least mention the source (we did quite some effort to do all the scanning…)

Genesis Publications' modus operandi has always been "We're putting out some nice books that nobody can afford." This has been going on for decades.

I have the cash right now to buy, I'm sure a bunch of us could round up a few dollar bills to purchase, but seriously? So it's not aimed towards fans, then it leaves a distaste in my mouth. Honestly, how many fans have this sort of $$$ to blow on a book? By the way, those images shown in the promo, I'm sure I've seen all but about one, maybe two before. I'm not really getting what the deal is here, I mean, even if it were half price, I still don't see a purchasing incentive.

Genesis are the people that published George Harrison's book I Me Mine. There was so much demand for it, that eventually a mass market version was produced.

From The BBs official email:
"Our new book The Beach Boys By The Beach Boys via Genesis Publications is set for release this December. It offers a rare glimpse into our personal world through never-before-seen photos and documents; and captures our journey all the way back to being a garage band in Hawthorne, CA to becoming an internationally renowned act."
Very excited for this!
