What do you all think of the Brian and Friends live Las Vegas 2014 performance? I played the show last Friday.
I love it. Would post, but can't get so many of the youtube videos to post these days.
I'm giving "Pacific Coast Highway" (Beach Boys version) a soft 9/10. I don't listen to this too often. Brian can
push the sadness button well. He tries to get at least one on every album. For The Beach Boys reunion album
he really stacked 'em up.
"Strange World" deserves a 10/10, but not the last three. I'll stay with my 10/10 ratings I gave for "Think About
the Days" and "That's Why God Made the Radio", meaning those are my three favorite songs on the album.

What do you all think of this performance? If this is the show you mean, sir, I found the trailer... ..."Sail Away"... ..."Wild Honey"... ...and "Saturday Night"... ...and that's all.

What do you all think of this performance? "Video unavailable". I don't think it's a geographical thing either. Perhaps you should give it another try, Will. You have half-an-hour to edit that post before the "Last edit" comment kicks in. After that you have another 23.5 hours. I can change a post anytime. Might be different for you overseas. When it wouldn't post, I had no replacement code. The code I used was correct. I don't have a premium youtube account. I'd guess money changes everything. Fees have gotten out of hand. Not sure how many of us ended up with Brian's live DVD. Haven't looked to see if the whole thing is on youtube. I do believe it is better than the Beach Boys reunion shows. The group he used is about as perfect as you could ask for. Then pieces started falling away.

Aye, watched some Brian footage from the early/mid 2000s the other day and remarkable how many members of that core band are no longer there, for various reasons.
Taylor, Scotty, Jeff, Nelson, Jimmy Hines… I think Bob Lizik’s currently back (well, not currently current but y’know …) and of course Nicky, god rest his soul.
Core stalwarts? Darian, Probyn, Paul Mertens…
Several new and talented members, of course, but those key years when Brian became addicted to touring (or so it seemed) were a blast for band and fans alike. Ach, I’m getting old… are we on Summer’s Gone yet? It’s been a dreary old winter’s day here in Yorkshire today, seems an appropriate tune.

Love that one. Ringo’s solo is really the icing on the cake

Today we discuss and rate Summer's Gone, originally intended by Brian as the last word on The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys in their final rag-tag assembly, and who's title was originally intended by Brian to be the album name.
Brian, it is said (by Joe), changed his mind (about the title and the concept of last BB outing) during recording cause he was having a real hoot and was starting to plan another BB album, thus dialled back on the finality and pushed for That's Why God as the title. A fine idea, although based on the later unravelling of C50 and beyond, he may been better sticking to Plan A.
Starting with a ghostly harpsichord, perhaps taking cues from both the dark epic sweep of Do You Like Worms and the baroque spiritualism of Wonderful from the Smile Sessions, Brian, recently ascended to spiritual being at the end of PCH (reads like a controlled substance) now comes back to take his cousin, friends and the memories of his brothers with him into the eternity of the cosmos, as they sadly acknowledge the passing of that old endless summer.
It's a simple song that delivers in spades and as per the preceding 2 tracks is a small miracle that Brian was finally able to dot the i.
Of greater surprise to me was Jon Bon Jovi's involvement - composition is credited to Brian, JBJ & Joe - and ability to chip-in to a moving and highly listenable tune.

I love it, but I still consider Endless Harmony to be the “true” last Beach Boys song.

Another solid nine. For the whole three song sweep, it goes up to eleven.

What a way to bow out of a career. Most bands would give an arm and a leg to be able to say goodbye with a song (and an album) of this calibre. And goodbye it is -- Chris Bleth's forlorn oboe solo says it all.
Ten.

I was blubbing by now, just as the rest of the family returned home from somewhere too, which was hard to explain.
Third ten in a row… for me this is up there with the final trio on Surf's Up, the last couple of songs on 20/20, the last song on Sunflower, everything on Pet Sounds, and… and… and… and it shouldn't have been possible so long after their career's peak of 65–73.

A heartfelt song that doesn’t quite live up to its brilliant concept. Monotonous and derivative of the aforementioned songs, this also reminds of Caroline No, which probably explains the BW solo vibe.
7/10

Summer’s gone- From 1966 to 2012 many artists tried and failed to recreate the magic of pet sounds. This is the only track I’ve ever heard where I thought ‘this could fit on pet sounds’. It’s that good. Superb songwriting- a deceptively complex chord progression that seems to spiral into itself rather than travel the usual ‘verse/bridge/chorus’ path. Delicate instrumentation- bravo to the studio musicians. To be in the room when they were recording this must have been magical (hope to hear an instrumental version one day). Classic Brian ‘heartbeat’ bass line. The oboe and flutes are divine. Lyrics heartbreaking, I’m not sure of another song that so regularly brings me to tears. This is my favorite track on the album, and one of the very best beach boys songs ever recorded in my view. A miracle within a miracle album. 10/10

A ten, and a great way to cap the recording career of The Beach Boys (assuming nothing further is recorded).

I am giving Summer’s Gone a 5. I think I liked it more when it was first released, but I rarely play it since then. I am not a big fan of the melody and it is a bit long. Lastly, I find it depressing and I hate ending an album on a melancholy note, especially a Beach Boys album.

I agree. It's a pretty tune, but too depressing for me to listen to (for personal reasons). I dislike the idea of it as an album ending (maybe ok for a suite ending, but not the whole album). As I mentioned earlier, I rearranged the tracks on my TWGMTR playlist so that "Strange World" is the last song, and the album ends on a more hopeful and satisfying note to me. I'm one of the rare few here giving "Summer's Gone" a five.

A ten, and a great way to cap the recording career of The Beach Boys (assuming nothing further is recorded). I agree, I gave the last 3 songs a ten. I think they are a fantastic ending to the last Beach Boys album. They remind me of the B-side of Today!

And a 10 from me too, although I agree it is quite maudlin. Not only summer, but also autumn and a fair chunk of winter has gone too, but there they are - still singing (sort of) 8 years later.

"Summer's Gone" - another heartbreak, another day. Of the brothers, only Brian got to grow old. There are other songs that point
that out without being so sad. I find it the weakest of the "suite" tracks. An 8/10, still.
I played as many live versions of this as I could find this morning on youtube. My favorite, as with "Pacific Coast Highway" is the one
from Las Vegas, 2014.

John, looks like things have changed. I can no longer change a post after a day. Oh, well. One more try: I thought it had always been that way. That code, https:[]//www.youtube.com/watch?v=md7BblKWraw, just isn't working for me. Perhaps try googling what it is you want to post and see where that gets you. Better still, let us know what it is and everyone can have a go...
