Straight 10. Completely left-field – unlike anything they did before but right up there with the very best of what had come before.
Yes, listen closely and you can hear where the lead vocal(s) has/have perhaps been stitched together or flown in from multiple different takes, but by golly it works like little else in the rock genre ever had before.
Vindication for those of us who hung on waiting for another Good Vibes or another Surf’s Up… we were never wrong to doubt it would come.

Five minutes ago, I guess as John was posting his, my post disappeared, saying there was an error.
I don't have time to rewrite it right now. Almost dinnertime! I give the song a 9/10.

Took a minute to sign back in. Not sure I should even be listening to this today. One of the saddest songs they ever did.

Today we discuss and rate Pacific Coast Highway.
I'm still speechless after all of these years that this made it to A Beach Boys record - but thank god it did, it's 2.05 min running time taking us across LA, California and on unto an uncertain existence out in the further the universe.
The first section is almost a micro rerun of From There, but after the weeping violin riff capping the "My Life" verse, Brian opens his soul to all, as he drives down Highway 1, the setting sun, it's not hard to imagine he's driven off the Bixby Bridge and become one with the force. Given what we know about Brian and his life (too much, btw) it's raw and moving.
Goodbye - 10
Here's a clip our old pal and former board member SJ Stoney chucked together if you can't access the above.

PCH- Gorgeous. The opening vocal chorale seems to ascend where Our Prayer descends. The tempo changes unique and pointed...speeding up at the beginning of ‘My life’ and then coming to a crashing halt. Similar to the next track, there seems to be discordance around the idea of acceptance. The first ‘my life’ is confident. The second one tailspins into doubt. And then of course, the image of Brian driving off into the sunset on PCH. I don’t think I truly appreciated this moment until I lived in LA and witnessed the majesty of Highway one. I’m not surprised it’s Brian’s final route. A real tear-jerker. 10/10

Another 10, though not up to the level of the previous one.

Thomas’ strike of subtlety keeps going strong. Finally, we get 10 seconds of gorgeous group harmonies that live up to their best harmony singing. Actually, this sounds like a reinvention of one of the main melodic lines of Think About the Days, which is a clever way of rounding up the album.
Parts of the song are reminiscent of Dennis’ bombast, while lyrically team W-T reach their zenith.
A heartfelt, delicate and brief companion piece to FTTBA, this is almost too good. Will they keep the momentum?
10/10

A solid nine, nine and a half. Majestic, elegiac, melancholic. I see Dennis in the setting sun.

From There To Back Again returns a spectacular LOVE!!! rating of 100% across 22 voters and Mikie. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the rhythmically free central section of "Pacific Coast Highway" has only occurred once before in BB music, namely in the central section of "Surf's Up". Once again, it ups the emotional ante big time. (Andrew's image of Dennis doesn't help one jot!) "PCH" also boasts the most stunningly evocative orchestration since the opening bars of "Can't Wait Too Long". In my opinion. Ten.

First time of listening, by the time I got to this stage in the album I was welling up. The "Goodbye…" broke me, as I'm sure it was intended to do. Been wanting another BBs album ever since (of course) but this song and its ending was BW maybe telling us "no more". And that's heartbreaking.
Second ten in a row, the album's third so far for me.
