During the sequence in this 2018 documentary by Werner Herzog and André Singer when Mikhail Gorbachev is mourning the death of his wife Raisa, a stunning unnamed lament can be heard playing. It seems I'm not the only one looking for it! A certain Jake Charles Rees tweeted about it (presumably in vain) last November, which is great because this splendid fellow provides a clip! You might need to turn on the volume in the video to hear it:
Is this music familiar to anyone? If not, is it possible to pick out some of the lyrics? I'd be eternally grateful for some help with this.

aeijtzsche has saved the day (again). I'm sure she won't mind me quoting her: "Sounds like the vocal is from a field recording of a folk song that the movie composer then overlaid with that dreamy pad stuff." Mystery solved! Thank you, JH.

Hardly "solved" - "might" be a field recording of some unknown person singing an unknown song. Maybe there's a clue, or more info, in the documentary credits. For example, a very swift Google informs that the composer of the soundtrack is Nicholas Singer. Here's a contact page from his website, maybe ask him ? Contact Nicholas Singer

Contact Nicholas SingerThanks for the link and the suggestions, A, but it's solved as far as I'm concerned. There won't be an OST (too little music) so the most you're ever going to get is if some kind YouTuber uploads the scene in question with the entire song on it. I'm not interested in the folk song as such--it's what Singer does with it that's utterly fascinating. The strangeness of it makes sense now.

Hm, logged in here, looks like I been tagged "yesterday" but tag disappeared. Could be band Ivan Kupala, dubbed due to Slavic holiday, they sing like it. It ain't "lament" & it ain't upbeat (cue info):
Its hit song "Kolyada":
That band blends ethnic with (euro)dance.

What she says makes perfect sense to me. Thanks anyway for your suggestions. I hear the resemblance between the voices. Nice blend of styles they have there, as you say.

Well, figured question is to find which song it is. It's the same song & the same singer in 2 links. At least title is figured.
