CATP, the current featured album, was released in 1972, which was the year I bought my first single (with my own money). Something cool? Something classic? Sorry, but no: I also remember my parents: "This isn't an original song!" (I like to say that now too.) Checking that it was Paul Anka, led me to: ""Puppy Love" is a popular song written by Paul Anka in 1960 for Annette Funicello" www.songfacts.com/facts/paul-anka/puppy-loveA strangely unexpected link with the Beach Boys! What was the first single you bought?

First singles bought: Monster Mash, Raindrops, Mountains High, Rubber Ball. Not exactly sure which was the very first.

"Hats Off To Larry" by Del Shannon, in 1961. Earlier that year I had been confronted by his "Runaway", which had turned all my 12-year-old concepts of pop on their head ("So you can do this too!"). Later I bought his debut album--this was all with birthday and/or pocket money--but "HOTL" came first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del_Shannon

It's been fun listening to all these - most of them betraying the musical tastes of 4-to-12 year olds! Apart from Aerosmith and REM (too cool!), not to mention Fille's very early good taste Noting that: - Johnny Wakelin also sang "In Zaire". After all, if you've got a theme going, why not milk it?
- The Move - reminds me that "Fire Brigade" was a song from my very very early days, along with "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera". I probably didn't hear them in real time, difficult to know, memory can play tricks.
- "Rubber Ball" - my brother-in-law, a Mr. A. Ball, was haunted by 'bouncy, bouncy! bouncy, bouncy!' being sung at him throughout his school years. Built character, I'm sure.
If you haven't posted yours already, do it now! Don't be embarrassed.
Keith West, never knew what he looked like:
