To all with knowledge of the BB library: How far along was the Cousins, Friends and Brothers LP of 1982? I know no formal sessions were done, but this is what we know we had:
Be My Baby River Deep Mountain High Greenback Dollar Bucks Children Of The Night I'm A Man Candlesticks Boys & Girls Up Again Fly My Solution Shortenin' Bread
Stevie Reins Walking On Water Sweetie
Why Don't You Tell Me Why California Dreamin' California Calling Cry Like A Baby Runaway
Val Garay brought "WHAT YOU DO TO ME" for the group and then Carl took it for YOUNGBLOOD.
Any info would be helpful.

Not so: Carl handed in a master for his second solo album in the spring of 1982, and it was returned with a request for a "hit" single to be added. The sessions for "WYDTM" were in July & August.

I didn't mean he took a track cut for the group. But Carl said in an interview that when the group was looking at outside producers, Val brought WYDTM (written by ORLEANS member Jon and Johanna Hall) for the group to cut as a track. When Carl needed a hot tune for YOUNGBLOOD, he remembered WYDTM and took it for his use.

He mentioned it to Geoffrey Himes in his interview with Geoffrey in 1982. Val gave the tune to the group as an offering of the material he had access to. Part of his resume I am guessing.

Wasn't Cousins Friends and Brothers originally considered as a title for KTSA?

Wasn't Cousins Friends and Brothers originally considered as a title for KTSA? Yep. It was CF&B, then CAN'T WAIT TIL SUMMER then finally KTSA. CF&B was tossed around as a title for a possible 1982 lp. The BBFU newsletter talked about it, but Bruce told Himes that the lp was on hold due to Brian being in bad shape. Around the same time in 1982, MTV did a story about the Beach Boys recording RUNAWAY live in Cleveland for release soon. After months if no word, I called Steve at CBS to ask about a release date. He told me that RUNAWAY was pulled because CBS didn't really want to release another oldie so soon after COME GO WITH ME. I have since heard that CBS also pulled the plug because the group didn't have an lp to go along with it. Besides Val, the group talked to Barry Gibb and Lindsey Buckingham as well. Anyone of them could have done a decent job. I always wondered why they didn't go into their tape library and assemble an LP. They had more than enough tunes to choose from. I am guessing the crap going on around the group made that impossible.

I don't think "Reins" and "Walking On Water" are from this era...they do exist on a piano/vocal demo tape along with a piano/vocal rendition of "Sweetie", but my copy of that tape is prefaced by a spoken introduction that dates it to 1986. Yes, "Sweetie" was around as a song in '81, but I don't think the other two were, and I think Brian made that demo recording of all three in '86. I think '85 is the earliest mention of "Walking On Water".

As for SWEETIE, I found this on the SS board. Some butt hole was bugging Alan Boyd about SWEETIE and Alan was nice enough to answer him:
Title: Re: The Alan Boyd Thread Post by: petsite on February 26, 2006, 08:24:09 PM Thanks Alan for the info.
I may have asked you this in the past so please forgive the repeat.
In an interview done in San Francisco in Dec. 1981 (when the BB were playing the Circle Theatre), Brian said that the group has cut Sweetie with Alan, Mike and Brian singing a combined lead. He goes into great detail on this and even talked of the key of the song (B). Was this found in the vaults?
Also, the version of GV on the Rarities LP of 1983 came from The Best Summers Of Our Lives 1/4 track reels sent to radio stations. As of 2000 (the last time I checked) that mix had not turned up in the vault. Has it since been found?
Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob,
1. Yes.
2. Haven't located this... but we do have the 1/4" master of that radio show.

Brian says something about if he could only get in the studio for a few weeks he could finish the lp. Of course he then asks for the guys to bring some coke back with them after the show so.......

<<Brian Wilson demo sessions: Reins/Walking On Water Spring 1981 according to AGD'S site.>> Right - but to my point, I think people have assumed that the tape with all three of these songs dates from '81, simply because those two songs share tape with a rendition of "Sweetie", which as a song is known to come from '81 - but the actual piano/vocal demo recording of those three songs that circulates apparently comes from '86. There IS a studio recording of "Sweetie" from '81 - basic track with drum machine, and a rotating Al-Mike-Brian lead vocal. Haven't heard it myself, only heard of it. But I'm pretty sure those other two songs weren't written until after the "Brothers, Cousins, and Friends" era, or whatever it was to be called. And by "after", I mean likely the second Landy era. Unless, of course, I'm proven wrong.

But you're the sessions guy, so I bow to you! And yes I know NBJ is from '79, but it is still the huffy-puffy Brian.

Brian apparently was considering "Night Blooming Jasmine" for the group's next release, since he mentions it as a "new song" during that infamous hotel room rap in December '81. It likely would've been doctored up, or recut entirely. Another song he mentioned at that time is, of course, "City Blues" - and yet another title floating around from that era is "Dancin' U.S.A.". Also, we can add "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love" (released on the M.I.C. box) to that list of titles running from "Be My Baby" to "I'm A Man". And finally, the 1980 versions of "Shortenin' Bread" and "My Solution" were cut at the same session under the general title "Song Within A Song".

When i heard the 1980 version of "Shortenin' Bread", I was like what the hell? This was back in the 1980s. THEN I found out about how Brian works. I know of at least FOURTEEN times he has cut PROUD MARY. His track like that in the 2000s was MR. TAMBORINE MAN. Of course, the difference with Shortenin' Bread is that it HAD been released. Maybe he was doing a BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL or HELP ME RHONDA recutting, because the 1980 version is a lot stronger. But in the end, it's still SHORTENIN' BREAD.
In 2000, at the PET SOUNDS soundcheck, Brian was really nervous that day. So when he came out to do the sound check (where they were going to do Vibes like I said in my story), Brian said "Give me a minute." He reached into the pocket of his pullover shirt, pulled out his sunglasses, and preceded to play.......SHORTENIN' BREAD. Leaf and I looked at each other and then at Darien, who just went for it and played along with him. Brian turned to look at Darien, smiled, and they kept eye contact and just kept playing for about 2 minutes. I LOVED IT!!!

Thanks, that explains a lot. It explains the long gap between the recording of the album and the release. It also explains why my gf got a cassette with the hit single listed on the j-card...but it wasn't actually on the tape, not listed on the shell of the cassette.

I still have my two cassettes from 1983 without WYDTM on them. I bought one for me and one for another collector. He meanwhile found his own copy so I have mine opened and his copy still sealed.

I got a copy for myself somewhere along the way, should have made a copy before the oxide wore off, because I could swear the fade of Givin' You Up was longer than on the vinyl album.
