Having just written my very first screen scraper, to collect Beach Boys' lyrics, I thought, why not make a lyrics quiz for the lovely folks at EH?! So here's something for you to mull over this weekend. Hope you have a good time A Weekend Lyrics Quiz!
- Name the two songs that each feature the following words:
(a) hamburger stand (that one's for Mr Ham Burgerstand) (bonus: one more song has the word 'burger' in it - what is it?) (b) Chuck Berry (c) shackles
- Many tracks contain the names of the BBs. Place their names in order of most mentions to least mentions.
(clue: err, none feature Blondie or Ricky)
- Which four horoscope signs are mentioned?
- (a) Who knows where it's at?
(b) Who doesn't know where it's at?
- Birds (the feathered variety) feature a lot. I counted 11 (eleven!) different types. How many can you name?
- Which track has the fewest number of words, and what are they?
(Instrumental tracks with zero words aren't counted.)
- Which song contains the word 'hieroglyph'?
- Tie-breaker!! How many songs, out of the 350 in the list, have the word 'surf' in them?
(From the songs and lyrics as shown in www.azlyrics.com/b/beachboys.html )

Oooff! I'm not a lyrics person, pw, but I'll do my best to join in on this, particularly after all your hard work in setting it up. If I start, perhaps others can then work on the questions I couldn't answer (or got wrong). Many questions require an encyclopaedic knowledge of BB lyrics and/or some ingenious search strategy, neither of which I possess. Anyway, here's a start (cool idea, by the way): 1) a) "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Finders Keepers" (bonus for "burger": "Bull Session"?) b) "Do You Remember" c) "Feel Flows" 2) Pass! 3) Leo and Capricorn ("Solar System"), Pisces ("Funky Pretty", "Pisces Brothers") and Scorpio ("Strange Things Happen") 4) Still out on this... 5) So far: Crow, Cuckoo, Woodpecker, Sparrow, Chicken, Rooster, Bluebird, Trumpeter Swan, Dove, Eagle... 6) At a guess: "Let's Go Trippin'" 7) "Funky Pretty" 8) Pass!

5) So far: Crow, Cuckoo, Woodpecker, Sparrow, Chicken, Rooster, Bluebird, Trumpeter Swan, Dove, Eagle... Add Owl to that list. The word "Swallow" occurs in "Cuckoo Clock" but not as a bird. And "Little Bird" is a little vague.

Off the top of me head:
1.(c) Breakaway
4.(b) My ol' man
5. "Little"? Bloody hell John, you beat me to it by about 30 seconds

Sorry about that, Peter! And, I see now that "Shackles" is from "Long Promised Road"--I could hear Carl's voice singing it but went for the wrong song.

Not a bad set of answers so far - thanks for playing! For (2) and (8), you probably need to access all those years or decades of BB fandom to see what feels right, possibly?

Oh, and the answer to 4 (a) is "Susie Cincinnati". As an afterthought, pw, I didn't resort to your azlyrics link but just googled stuff and consulted a thesaurus for the birds.

eagle, crow, bluebird, chicken, seagull, dove, cuckoo, robin, sparrow, swan, rooster, swallow, woodpecker, owl 14 in the end, although woodpecker is in a title (not lyrics), and there's a legitimate swallow (bird) in Goin' South' that I missed in my first count. Also owl from Winter Symphony for completeness. No, we are not including 'little' !
- Which track has the fewest number of words, and what are they?
jk WINS with Let's Go Trippin' (3) (words are: let's, go, trippin')
This wasn't on the list I scraped so I didn't catch it. My answer was: Stoked (6) (words are: stoked, stoked, stoked, stoked, stoked, stoked)
- Which song contains the word 'hieroglyph'?
Funky Pretty
- Tie-breaker!! How many songs, out of the 350 in the list, have the word 'surf' in them?
27! (not really that many, uh?)
(From the songs and lyrics as shown in www.azlyrics.com/b/beachboys.html) Surely you've all been waiting with excitement for the answers?! See above, where they're in pink if the players didn't catch them, although jk wins on the fewest words question. 🎁 'Bye now.

Oh, yes, and sorry, jk, I couldn't find 'owl'. I'm sure it must be somewhere... It's in "Winter Symphony" (I only found out yesterday!): "Hear the winter winds howl Pierced by the hoot of an owl" What prizes have you got lined up for us, pw?

That would be David Nelson from the Ozzie and Harriet Show.

Thanks, Emdeeh! Must be an ancient (from 1957?) American programme!

Have added in the owl. Well, your present is up above, and here's one for Sneaky: 🎁. Be sure to tell me what's inside, won't you? Ah--so that's the present! It's not very big, is it? I hope it's something edible. (l'll open it later.)
