The Car Song thread got me thinking about this one. There are tunes that I didn't really LOVE when I first got into the group that I do now. Some I just passed by (LP CUTS) and some I thought were ok but didn't grab me until later.
1.) Heroes And Villains - I liked this song BUT I started loving this song when the cantina version came out. Brian's vocal has some much punch, as did the track itself. I liked the cantina section and really the entire track. This is one of my all time faves.
2.) The Lonely Sea - This one is recent. I got the Past Masters version of SURFIN' USA a couple of years ago and just really fell for this tune. So mad I didn't get into it earlier!
3.) Feel Flows - this didn't grab me until the 90s Brother Records cds. Love it now.
BTW, if you ever have a chance to get the CD collection below, please do. So much of it is in mono and the sound quality is excellent. Lonely Sea is in mono and was out on this 4 years before the 2012 remasters.

Actually, I LOVE “Cool, Cool Water” from Sunflower. Its sound is incredible, I listen to Desper version from his study videos analysis and I must say that this is a great one. The “drip drip drip” backing vocals are amazing. It’s been three days that this song is in my speakers, repeating.

A lot of Pet Sounds took me a while to "get", when I bought my first (of many). I was young and had yet to have my heart broken…

Kokomo. Even "like" is too strong for my feeling now but in recent years I am much less cringy and it is starting to even take on a warmish glow of nostalgia.

Over the last couple years, I've grown to love Daybreak Over the Ocean (TWGMTR version).

I loved almost all of Pet Sounds when I first played it, but for some reason couldn't get my head around "I'm Waiting For The Day" until the stereo mix, and especially the instrumental track appeared. Now, Brian's vocal from 2.02 to 2.18 is something that completely floors me, and the previously buried string section behind that passage is exquisite. And to think that for years I used to skip this song. Idiot.

That string section is terific yes, also the string section behind "Don't talk…" which surfaced in the firest PS box set. THAT was bewilderingly beautiful, evidence right there of BW's genius.

I didn't care much for any of the Love You album the first time I heard it, except for "Mona", which I thought was nice. But after listening to it several more times, all the songs began to grow on me, and now "Let Us Go On This Way" is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs.
I also went from feeling neutral about Mrs. O'Leary's Cow to actually enjoying it.

BREAKAWAY - I heard it on the radio once or twice and found the single a year or two after it had come out. I thought it was hokey and derivative. The track sounded 'hippy loose.' The sentiment was sappy. I didn't like it. I had temporarily drifted away from buying/listening to West Coast pop; I was into experimental jazz and classical records, among other things. I was 16. What did I know? I've come to appreciate it. The vocals are quite stunning.

Tears in the Morning for me, always thought it was a bit over sentimental and Paul Anka ish, but now find it quite affecting. Must be growing older that does it!

Slip on Through - A great song but really bad choice for an album opener and lead single. It took at least a dozen listens before it started to get it's hooks into me and a good year before I started to consider it up there with Dennis' best.

The 2012 remastered stereo mix of the entire album surfin USA as available on TID AL Music application in what they call a masters level of reproduction is absolutely incredible head to toe. Including sleepers like Lana and find yours keepers. I listened to it twice today back-and-forth to Santa Monica and the production is really the height of garage band pre punk music and the boys are playing and singing their hearts out.
I used to just mainly enjoy the title cut and the lonely sea and sometimes farmer's daughter and was sort of enjoying the instrumentals, but in recent listening the entire album is on fire start to finish

Heard Brian do that at a sound check during the Jeff Beck tour and in isolation, it was mind-blowing on its own merits, not mixed in with the rest of Pet Sounds.

Now for some crazy shit, I blame male menopause.
Endless Harmony (the first section) - boy, those kiss ass words really blow, however Bruce sings his ass off as he ponders what’s it all mean.
Still Cruisin’ - ho boy, I disowned the band for some time (4-6 weeks) after this one, hot on the coat tails of Jokomo slid out, but over the years, to my suprise, I have come to appreciate it’s simplistic joys, and good vocals by Carl and Al.
Shelter - not a bad ‘un, thought Smithy as he hurried the brand new TWGMTR CD through his chain, but not great. However, I’ve come to regard it as a stand-out from said album, not far behind the suite pieces and the title track.

Now here is one that I liked right away but my fondness has only grown exponentially since I first heard it - SURF'S UP. There is no better track by anyone anywhere. This is what perfection sounds like.
(EXCEPT, WHY DIDN'T CARL DO A PUNCH IN ON HIS VOCAL WHERE HE RUNS OUT OF BREATH AT THE END OF THE FIRST VERSE???)

Side one of Surf's Up--yes, my favourite album (look to your left) I first heard SU in 1971 and loved side two from the start. Maybe it was because it was an LP but one or two things on side one failed to grab me so after one listen I didn't bother with it--for more than thirty years. It was only on buying the CD in 2002 that "Long Promised Road" became a firm favourite of mine and the rest of side one fell into place soon after. Actually the last track to do so was not the much-maligned "Feet" or "SDT" but "DGNTW"! I love it all now.
