Per Stephen Desper: "I am sad to report that a devastating fire in the factory of the major supplier of lacquer masters used to make LP records will bring the production of LP's to a halt very soon. Lacquer discs have a limited shelf life so are not stockpiled. Stock is limited. If you have been thinking about buying a vinyl copy of any record, get your credit cards out and do it now! Even old LP's will be affected and soon become expensive and unavailable. Without masters, pressing plants will have no business and could close also. It will be some time before the situation is corrected. Much of the equipment used to manufacture lacquer discs is old and not made anymore. The LP part of the music business was making a come back. Now it's a setback. The discs out of Japan are few and sub-standard. The best formulas were used here, now lost. Metal cutting can still be used, but the cutting heads are rare and have another set of problems. I just returned from major industry show, Florida Audio Expo, where vinyl rules. Record playback equipment used by audiophiles with systems ranging from $30,000 to $750,000 for 2-channel playback systems was on display. These are very serious LP enthusiasts. The fire was all the talk of the show, so it is not a passive story. It will influence every aspect of the recording industry. A terrible turn of events." ~swd ultimateclassicrock.com/fire-vinyl-records/

Shit.
My wife will be delighted....
One minor correction re Stephen's observations:
"Even old LP's will...soon become expensive and unavailable" - that's already happened.
Anyway, if you are residing in the USA and not subject to totally f-ed exchange rates and the US Mail gouge, hit the Acoustic Sounds page and buy up those old reissues, you'd be nuckin' futs if you didn't!

Thrilled? Your wallet is selfish.

Thrilled? Your wallet is selfish. The epitome of selfish, which is why I openly defy it and keep it mostly empty 🤣🤣

Hey Stephen - Rainbo’s closure last year was due to a premises rental dispute and I get the feeling the management was “over it”- they had a pretty bad quality control rep, lots of off centre and noisy pressings and they notoriously botched a The Beatles reissue boxed set. I believe another company bought the presses, which now may be the incumbent company’s folly due to the Lacquer plant fire.

Between this and the facts that are coming out about the 2008 UNIVERSAL fire just now, this really sucks out loud. Of course, as Mark and Alan have seen, tapes etc seem to just go poof into the wind without a care. GOOD VIBRATIONS 8-Track master anyone?

Honestly, I think we've gotten a lot more than anyone would have expected decades ago. I remember when we were all excited because Capitol was doing the twofer cd's of the Beach Boys catalog, so not only did we get the albums in improved sound, but we got BONUS TRACKS!! Bonus tracks like Can't Wait Too Long, the alternate Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations sessions. And then the box set craze came along, and we got the 93 box with 30 minutes of Smile music..and then the Pet Sounds box...and I guess that one was the beginning of box sets devoted to a particular album. So we've really been spoiled. I really can't complain if we never get another Beach Boys archive release.

That is true. But so much was lost in the 2008 fire. All of Buddy Holly's masters are gone. That in and of itself pisses me off.

I’m a big fan of a band called Trip Shakespeare, and ran into one of the members a little while back and asked why their last (and best) album didn’t get an Omnivore vinyl reissue like their other albums did, and it’s because the master was lost in that fire :/

The man died over 60 years ago, and they've released dozens of compilations in the decades since. It's not like he had a long career.

COMMENT: All these re-issues and bonus tracks are being placed on the market so as to extend the copyright protection, especially in the European marketplace due to changing laws under the European Union.
Beach Boy masters, multi-tracks and copies thereof were at one time kept at Iron Mountain in Colorado. Some were at times also kept at the Pacific Title storage facility in Los Angeles. The danger is not in storage, but in transport. As it becomes necessary or desired to issue re-masters or outtakes or whatever, the originals must make their way to Los Angeles and Mark Linett's studio for processing and production. Digital Masters are easily transferred via the Internet, but analog masters, if issued in analog form, uncontaminated by conversion to digital, are another and more complex story. Imagine if all of the Beach Boys masters were lost and we didn't have the backups that Mark and Alan have done. A lot of songs are just gone. The record company at first said hey, all of the music is on Pandora, etc. It shows the lack of care labels use. At one time in the early 2000s, when some Wall Street firms were overseeing some labels, they asked why master tapes couldn't be junked for all the albums released on CD and just copies of the cd could be kept. It could save money. Well, do you want a vinyl record cut from a cd?

If you are just looking for reissues of catalog material, with improved sound, then yes, the lost of the masters might prove to be a problem. Now when we say the masters are gone, are we including the original multi-track tapes? Or just the mixdown masters?
