Bob was sitting on the plane, waiting to fly to Baltimore, when a guy took the seat beside him. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, obviously in fear. "What's the matter?", Bob asked, "Flying bother you?"
"No, I've been transferred to Baltimore. I've heard things are terrible there. They've got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public schools, and the highest crime rate in the nation."
Bob replied, "I've lived in Baltimore all my life. It's not as bad as the media say. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, and enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe of a place as you want to make it."
The guy relaxed and stopped shaking. He said, "Oh, thank you! I've been worried to death. But if you live there, and say it's OK, I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?"
"I'm a tail-gunner on a Budweiser truck."

"I'm a tail-gunner on a Budweiser truck." The Wire (Tv show) didn't make it look like a good place to live, but there's always good neighborhoods in any town/city. When I first went to San Francisco in 1970, people told me, "it's safe to walk around here, not so safe in other areas". One that I was told to stay away from was the Haight from Fillmore to the Golden Gate Park entrance! And the park itself at night. That area over where Winterland was, too. I braved to go to both areas, and never had a problem. Lucky, I guess.
Later, it was the Mission near 23rd/24th Streets. That was dicey in the 80s - you'd hear gun shots often. But those clubs South of Market were where some of the great music was. It's all gentrified now, right? They were building the new Giants Baseball Park as I was leaving. I haven't been to California since 1998. When they started calling Valencia Street the Valencia Corridor I knew it was going to be a place I couldn't afford to grow old in. It's safe and peaceful living in the country of Upstate New York.

As long as I can remember (I'm 39), there were always parts of Baltimore City you just avoided. For the most part, that stands true today.
But, since the Freddie Gray riots four years ago, the Baltimore City Police Department no longer has the support from the Mayor or State's Attorney's Office. In the past four years, violent crime has spiked, and unfortunately has spread into the better areas of the City, and even bled into Baltimore County. Until Baltimore gets leadership with the balls to let the Police do their jobs, things will continue to spiral out of control.
