If you saw my post on the old forum, this is nothing new, but I recently launched a...well, self-indulgent podcast - Autobiography of a Schnook. It kind of came about because a few years ago I was planning to do a Beach Boys podcast, but when it was in the planning stages a friend asked me to co-host a video game podcast with him, so I did that instead. In the mean time, Wyatt and Jason launched Sail On, which was exactly the kind of podcast I wanted to do, except they do it much better than I had planned. But I recently started Autobiography of a Schnook partly because I really wanted to do my Beach Boys podcast, but I realized that if I limit myself to the Beach Boys, I'm doing myself a disservice. So every episode has a segment called "Music for Schnooks." The first full-length episode has a Brian-centric Music for Schnooks, and the episode I just released before Christmas has some BB/BW content. Anyhoo...give it a listen...it's just something I wanted to get out. Stories of my life, observations, and of course, music.

I listened to episodes 2 & 3 the other night. The mall episode definitely resonated with me. You and I are the same age, and I grew up in the NW Suburbs (Arlington Hts. area) so of course I could relate to everything you remembered about the malls of your youth, only on my side it was Randhurst, Town & Country and Woodfield that I frequented.
I went by Randhurst last year when I was in town visiting my mom, and they had completely gutted the inside of the mall, to where it is no longer connected via internal arteries. All the smaller shops and the food court (basically the center of my adolescent existence) are gone now. The remaining stores are now entirely outward-facing, and the mall seems to be going for an unholy mixture of "town square" and big-box hell. There's a little boutique-y section with mid-scale restaurants on one side, and a Costco and a Home Depot on the other. Back it the day the anchor stores were "Carson's", "Ward's" and "Weiboldt's" (as our moms would call them), but those are all gone now in the wake of CPS& Co. going out of business.
Old Town School of Folk Music sounds fresh! You have all kinds of classes there I only wish they offered us at Columbia, where the focus of the music program was entirely jazz or classical. I mean, Garage Rock Combo? Music of The Beatles? Come on! I would have given pretty much anything to have been offered those as courses in college. (Of course, maybe it's good I wasn't, as I would have spent too much time enrolling in those and not focusing on my major.)
Keep it up, man. Good stuff so far!

Hi, all. There's a new episode JUST RELEASED. The reason I'm posting about it is the second segment -- "Music for Schnooks" -- focuses on 15 Big Ones. It was HUGELY edited down for the actual published episode, but if you want to hear the full-length talk, it's linked separately on the Autobiography of a Schnook web site.

just a heads up - new episode is out. This time, the "Music for Schnooks" segment is called..."Dick Dale, The Beach Boys, and the 'Sloop John B' Myth." Some...observations, let's just say.

In the regular music segment of my podcast, I talked about Wondermints in honor / remembrance of Nick:

Just released a new episode. Two segments: one about my college radio career, another about the concerts I saw this year. Both have pretty significant Beach Boys content!

Recently did another episode. This time the music segment talks about my memories of the world of trading, well..."Dutch imports," as I heard some euphemistcally people call them. Strong Beach Boys content here. (The first bit of the podcast is actually some Catholic humor, so if you don't have a sense of humor, skip about 38 minutes!)

Just thought I'd post about the episode I just released, because I know many people on this forums are into vinyl. Brief Beach Boys mention, too.
- Growing Up Vinyl – coming of age in a pre-CD era
- My Weird Record Collection – hypertension, enunciation, and puu puu!
- Top Ten Favorite Albums to Listen To on Vinyl – does there really need to be an explanation on this side of the hyphen?
