Here's a thread to talk about specifically about music-related fiction movies, tv, books, etc.
I'm skipping past This Is Spinal Tap and The Rutles and going straight to a lesser known mockumentary that I count as one of my favourites.
I was watching Mike Judge's Tales from the Tour Bus (not fiction, but entertaining as hell and worth mentioning for that reason) and was reminded of The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico.
Not a new movie but one that I think is criminally underrated. It's a mystery to me why this movie seems to have flown so under the radar. Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Levon Helm, etc. all telling stories about a fictional outlaw country music star as if he's a real dude. Hilarious.

I find it amusing that the Steel Dragon song "Stand Up and Shout" is becoming a staple at NFL games. Steel Dragon is the fictional heavy metal band from 2001's Rock Star.

It was actually written for the movie by Sammy Hagar, who later did his own version. But, the one I heard at the last Ravens game I attended was definitely Steel Dragon. It was easy to tell from Zakk Wylde's guitar.

Not that I have followed his career to any depth, but I really loved his Book of Shadows album.

Lately I've been on a Crossroads (1986, Ralph Macchio) kick. Don't know if it was because it featured "Karate Kid" Macchio or if it was because it was a fictional story built around actual music history (Robert Johnson), but it seems like the movie was never taken very seriously. I think it's pretty good, actually, and I may have to seek out a DVD of it, since all I've got is an aging VHS! This scene is worth the price of admission:

Never heard of this movie but that scene was entertaining. I don't remember exactly what year Karate Kid came out (I suppose google is my friend) but that scene was very much the Karate Kid of guitar shredding, LOL. Apparently Crossroads is on Netflix, so I think there is likely to be a viewing later.

Let's not forget about the great Dewey Cox.
Also, the band Stillwater.

I remember the first time I saw Almost Famous and there was very much a part of me that wished Stillwater was a real band. The original songs in that movie were so good – Fever Dog is the one that comes to mind.
Dewey Cox – I think it’s fair to say the BW Pet Sounds/Smile sessions parody scene in that movie is the best and most memorable part. Didn’t VDP actually write the music for that scene?
The Oneders... I had to look that up. I have to shamefully admit I've never seen That Thing You Do.

The Oneders... I had to look that up. I have to shamefully admit I've never seen That Thing You Do. That Thing You Do is a must-see! It is clearly my favorite out of all the music related movies. The attention to detail in the visuals and in the music (which is all original for the movie) goes a long way in making you feel like it's the 1964-65 era. It's a fun movie with a lot of humorous dialog. In a nutshell, it's about a group of young friends who put together a local band, then go national and become a one hit wonder while they quickly fall apart due to personal issues. A very common tale....

I’m a big fan of the Simpsons episode where homer joins a barbershop quartet. Episode includes many Beatles references and a George Harrison cameo
