Stumbled across this scan of a 1936 Austrian newspaper with the font that was used for the Pet Sounds cover. They use it for some of the article headlines while the text of the articles is set in Gothic throughout!
On a side note, the article on this page that led me to this scan reports that the 1936 Austrian female soccer championship final was stopped and abandoned early in the second half because when it started raining, the goalkeeper of one of the sides left the field fearing for her permanent wave, and the rest of her team followed her! Gladly, we've come a long way from there...

Thanks, Malc, for that - an OMG moment - The Archie and Jughead comics used the same typeface! Shame he was not awarded copyright.

Thanks for the link on Cooper Black -- that was hilarious! Are there any more font "documentaries" from that source?

As far as I am aware, or at least as much as I can find, that was a one-off ! Shame, as I reckon a video on the squirly Beautiful ES font, later 'adapted' into the Caribou/Carl Wilson style would be cool !
