For our troops:
As we celebrate this day, we cannot forget you out there protecting the freedom of our country. It is because of people like you who believe in this great country that we have the opportunity to celebrate this occasion. You are appreciated!
Happy Fourth of July.

Actually, according to lyricist Jack Rieley, it's about the then-curent about the government trying to suppress the NY Times.

My man, this is an anti-war song. As long as it's not a pro-war song

My man, this is an anti-war song. As long as it's not a pro-war song If anybody needs one of those, just look to longtime friend of The Beach Boys, the late Jan Berry. He was the ultimate chicken hawk in the mid '60s, churning out songs like "Only a Boy" and "The Universal Coward" while trying to get out of going to Vietnam. *This was obviously all before Jan's fateful accident. His outlook on all this apparently changed quite a bit after the accident and his (partial) recovery. His work getting back to the studio and stage after the accident is something to be admired.
