Peter Tetteroo and John Swildens are the main writers Exciting news! Tetteroo (not to be confused with the late singer/composer of Dutch band Tee-Set) wrote an excellent book on The Band (Robertson/Manuel/Hudson/Danko/Helm) titled "De Grondleggers van de Americana" (The Founding Fathers/Originators of Americana).

And the local press is giving the Holland-era some attention as well.
Nice little vid and podcast. But - sorry - in Dutch only. Some talk with the former owner of the cafe from across the street, current owners of a nearby house, the former cleaner of the studio, etc..
Now how do I get that video downloaded...?
This here's a Google translation of the article: When the Beach Boys came to Baambrugge: 'They were just part of the inventory'Baambrugge - It's hard to imagine that one of the biggest bands in the world chose Baambrugge to record an album. Yet it happened. The Beach Boys settled in 1972 in the town near the provincial border and had the album 'Holland' recorded there. That was exactly 50 years ago and that is why RTV Utrecht made a podcast and an item in which we spoke with residents from Baambrugge who were involved at the time. Why exactly did the American superstars choose Baambrugge? That had everything to do with their manager. He was a fan of the Netherlands and thought it was good for the band, which was in a creative dip, to gain new inspiration. On the Rijkstraatweg a shed was moved into where the band started their recordings. A shed now stands on the site of the barn. And it borders the backyard of Merlin and Natascha Kalkman. "Yes, that's where it was recorded. The Beach Boys' album 'Holland'", Merlijn says proudly. The couple bought the house a few years ago in the knowledge that the garden was in a special place. Natascha: "I think it's a nice piece of history that just happened behind our site. We were not there, but it's very nice to get that story along and also to pass it on." StonedFreek Kolder was there at the time. He was the owner of restaurant-café 'De Punt' which is located right opposite the studio. The Beach Boys came to the cafe daily for a bouncer, a meatball or a sandwich. "Yes, they just came in, just like everyone else," says Kolder. "They were a little stoned now and then, but otherwise you didn't notice it much." Kolder spoke to the band members daily as they sat at the bar. "I could speak some English, but it wasn't my native language. Still, we usually worked it out. We talked little by little, what they liked and what I liked. I relate most to Carl Wilson I had the most affection with that, so to speak." Kolder thought they were sympathetic boys. But neither he nor the rest of the village were very impressed with the superstars. "No, they were just customers for me. And because they came so often, they were just part of the inventory at the time." Bed & BreakfastBack to Merlin and Natascha's house. There lies the famous LP on the record player. "Relaxed, huh?" says Natascha. Merlin: "It also has a nice rhythm". 'Holland' was never a resounding success. Nevertheless, the album received reasonable reviews and 'Sail on Sailor' became a modest hit. Merlijn and Natascha sometimes get unannounced visits from people who want to know whether the record was really recorded in their backyard. "Then they drive onto the site and ask: has that been here?" The Baambruggers are now toying with the idea of starting a bed & breakfast in their backyard. "And we think it's fun to make it the 'Beach Boys Bed & Breakfast Baambrugge'." Who knows, maybe one day it will happen and you will soon be able to sleep near a piece of special Baambrugge history. "If you lie here in the backyard and you close your eyes and you have the idea that you hear the Californian sounds and you feel the wind blowing. Then you imagine yourself a bit in California. California in the polder." RTV Utrecht recorded a podcast about the Beach Boys coming to Baambrugge. Talks were held with several residents of the village who were closely involved.

Actually, I was thinking about the train that ran past the studio several times a day. It made so much noise, they had to pause recording until it had gone. If it's still running, that would add much more authenticity to the BB BnB experience!

A recording of a train, perhaps?

I know. Train's still running. The cows are a bit further away now though.

It's high time this thread was a little nearer to the front than page 5... Hopefully it will soon be the scene of greater things than this faintly amusing rewrite of "California Saga: California". (Read the next in the series at your peril.)

Not every post is to everyone's liking but the joy of message boards is that you can pick and choose what you read. And no one's under any obligation to click on every link.

Looking for an interview with or quote from Dennis regarding the studio in Baambrugge. I'm pretty sure he had mentioned one time that the studio previously was a chicken barn AND a light (bulb) factory. But I start to doubt if I remembered that correctly. A quick search did result in a quote from Don Willard (studio engineer) that mentioned something similar in the Dutch "The Beach Boys In The Polder" docu.
Anyone here that has the answer?

Ah, just for kicks, a translation of an article from May 6th 1972. Interesting to see that the guys gathered in The Netherlands first before going on tour (the first gig being on the 7th in Saarbrücken in Germany). Probably to have a meeting with the local record company associated with Reprise, and to explore the possibilities of housing, or visit/judge the ones already found))

For you folks, some lovely backstage pictures taken with a friend named Michelle right after the Beach Boys' concert in Brussels, December 1970, and one of Dennis onstage. I have asked her to look at her original negatives if she can find them, there may be more treasures hidden there. <…> Phillipe, thanks so much for sharing these pictures. There's Bruce's red jacket again. And Dennis shirt is interesting as well. A radio Veronica shirt. I wonder when he got that one. Bruce visited the Veronica studio on Dec. 15th, but as far as I know, the other guys didn't when they arrived. So either Bruce got a couple of those on the 15th. Or someone from Radio Veronica was able to hand out them during the band's stay there a few days later (Dec. 18-20th). He even wore it on stage. Somehow I'd wish to find a shirt like that... Guess it was my lucky day. Actually found one! Not looking too bad for a 53 years old T-shirt.

Then he could go on that world cruise he's been planning for years. Actually, I wouldn't rule out an English edition. Stranger things have happened in Beach Boys Land.

Here you go. This is the passage regrettably headed "Stoned": Back then, Freek Kolder was the proprietor of De Punt, the pub directly opposite the studio. He recalls the Boys dropping in every day for an uitsmijter (ham, cheese and fried eggs on bread), a meat ball or a grilled cheese sandwich. "They just strolled in, the way everyone did. They were a little stoned from time to time, but otherwise you hardly knew they were there." Kolder used to chat with them when they sat at the bar. His smattering of English was usually enough to keep the conversation afloat. "Just day-to-day stuff, the things they liked, the things I liked. I got on best with Carl Wilson; you could say I had the most affection for him." He found them a sympathetic bunch. But like everyone else in the village he wasn't overawed by these superstars. "I just saw them as customers. And they were there so often you could say they were almost part of the furniture."

Yeah, I know. The book is written in Dutch. The presentation will be in Dutch… But it’s a joyous moment for me (and the main writers) nonetheless. On March 31st the book The Beach Boys in Holland will be presented officially. www.donner.nl/boekpresentatie-the-beach-boys-in-hollandSo, if you happen to be around in the Rotterdam area, be sure to sign up asap (as it’s a closed event, limited to 150 visitors)
