I listened to SS in stereo today for the first time in awhile and thought it was well done.
I have no knowledge of studio techniques, so how did Mark Linett separate out the voices into different speakers if the original was recorded in mono?

It wasn't recorded in mono. It was recorded on at least four-track machines, and some on an eight-track, so making a stereo mix from the session master's was relatively easy ("Good Vibrations" aside).

Pretty much all 8-track, aside from the previously-recorded backing tracks on "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes And Villians", which were captured on 3- and 4-track.

And why didn't somebody--anybody--make true stereo mixes in '67, rather than have Capitol subject everyone to those terrible duophonic releases? Were the multi's closely guarded or something?
