yeah… I posted the link before I listened. “Covers” was a choice of word I might have reconsidered.

Damn, has she developed a stutter or is that intentional? Brass In Pocket, it is not. Oh Chrissie, where did your voice go?

Damn, has she developed a stutter or is that intentional? Brass In Pocket, it is not. Oh Crissy, where did your voice go? her voice ain’t that bad - it’s not one of those voices that has a lot of room for deterioration - but the decision to slather the track in effects is bonkers! Bit like my kids when they have vanilla ice cream; they’ve got to have every flavour of sauce, and sugary bits, and chocolate bits, until they can’t taste the wonderful vanilla of the ice cream underneath it all.

A cool production. I like the effects and the chilled out vibe. Nice to see someone do something different with it.

Hmmm.
I agree with Mono that it's nice to see someone try to change it up a bit in interpreting some of BW's classics.
I also agree with John that vanilla is a very underrated ice cream flavor.

About 30-35 years ago, when I worked Security at the WARFIELD THEATRE in San Francisco, the Pretenders came to town to do a show.
As was the norm, most of the Security staff would meet on the main floor to relax and chat, and get our assignments for the night, and at times, the band playing that night, might be on stage still doing their sound check or working out last minute things before the doors would open. We would always sit quietly and not cause any problems.
The Pretenders were still sound checking, when a group of us came in and congregated in the back of the main floor, when Chrissie had a complete shit, and started yelling some major obscenities to all of us. She didn't want ANYONE on the floor or in the house while she was doing her soundcheck. It caused a big problem and many of us were like, "What the hell?" I lost complete respect for her that night, and have boycotted her from that point forward. There was NO need for this type of behavior. She acted as if she "walked on water". She was lucky the Security didn't walk out that night, as many were quite pissed about this. If that would've happen, the show would've been cancelled.
Anyway...since then, I haven't given a shit about anything new she's puts out, and to this day I change the station if the Pretenders come on the radio. Especially the one ballad she does called "I'll Stand By You", which still gets played quite a bit on some USA Radio. I find her voice on that and most things she's done to be nothing short of "finger nails on the chalkboard".
Yes, there are people who love her, and that's fine, but to hear her covering "Caroline, No". Oh..."Chrissie NOOOOOOOO". I'd rather go deaf. And frankly, "Who cares". I'd rather listen to ANYTHING else than her!!
Bitter? Not quite, but an artist with that much ego, won't ever have my respect.

You know, it wouldn't be so bad if she didn't go to the well so many times with the guttural herky jerk delivery. Just sing the damn notes straight; no need for the emotional hesitant choppy vocal. Maybe I've heard the song so many times already that I'm use to hearing it like the original, but covers of this song in the past were much better. One that comes immediately to mind is Timothy B. Schmit's version.

I like the basic approach of the track - the jazzy brass is pretty smooth and well arranged, but the skittering drum effects seem to have been plucked from a Doctor Who soundtrack LP circa 1987.
Chrissie is dreadful, sounding like a Chrissie impersonator having a bad day. The little girl vocal delivery to soft to reflect the heart break of the lyrics.

I like the arrangement; the singing, not so much. I never really got the love for the Pretenders, to be honest. Handful of decent songs. I think Ms Hynde is a tremendous self-publicist, but the business is full of them
