Right.
Well, this starts okay. Brian May adds some atmospheric string bending to the moody piano intro, the first verse harmonies aren't initially problematic, and some of the power chord fills/riffing pan out the emotional landscape.
However, it's pretty downhill from the moment the backing vox sort of oscillate upwards over some weird contemporary synth sounds.
I'm not a huge Queen fan aside from the top ten sort of hits (except for I Want To Break Free, rubbish), and there's no doubt Brian May is an incredible guitar player. He here provides a technically amazing solo during the original's extended outro section - emotionally and compositionally all for naught, I'm afraid, as his neo-shredding doesn't fit with Dennis's soulful and uplifting groove which is a personal highlight of the original; I could fade into oblivion all day every day listening to that sequence.
The ending is truly an unholy event, and I warn you too both cover your ears and avert your eyes or vice versa.

Just now finally got around to listening to it. The main part of the song isn't terrible. I don't recall ever listening to the original--if I did, it was quite a while ago--but I'm assuming there was some good potential in the idea of "finishing" it. Unfortunately that potential has been squashed by some over-zealous guitar frittering. Sounds to me like they went a bit overboard in trying to give it that 70s Queen/Boston/etc. sound.

Well, I finally listened to it. I like what Brian and Roger did... but this song didn't need it.

Is a high-res download available anywhere in the US yet (that isn’t Tidal)?

I saw that store.tidal.com was selling a FLAC version of the single but I’m not a fan of theirs. I was wondering if anyone was aware of any alternatives for buying a high-res version in the US. I assume us.7digital.com will have it soon but I’m getting tired of waiting…

Finally got around to listening to mine.
First off, it's yet another shoddily-made RSD record. The "Our Leader" Sunrays single's B-side (forgot the name) plays back with a LOT of flutter-and-wow, as does side 2 of the Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas soundtrack (I was nearly hypnotized watching the stylus go back and forth on the groove like a frickin' pendulum, it was pressed so off-center)..."Holy Man" appears to be centered properly, but 1) the spindle hole is too narrow -- nearly broke the damn record taking it off the platter, and 2) I don't know if "warped" is the proper term but more ripply, I guess -- stylus going up and down like an earthquake. Interestingly, the playback itself is fine...so...I dunno...
Aaaaanyhoo...the recording itself?? I actually like it -- up until the jam at the end. Brian May gets a little bit too full of himself. (Well...a LOT too full of himself, actually...too much showboating.) I like the extra vocal harmonies, though.
I always felt that the Taylor Hawkins version on the POB reissue was still missing something...still missing something, though...two verses, and then far too much missing space afterwards...no bridge or anything.

I dunno, maybe the wife had kept him penned up in his observatory too long and he felt he had to let rip.
