For them as have not read this seminal, nay, iconic text, this is pretty much where the Smile myth started, and it's got ultimate credibility because Siegel was there as it was happening. Enjoy. Goodbye Surfing, Hello God !

PS: that's not to say it's 100% factually accurate, of course...
Two examples. The shot of Brian in the fire hat is, patently, not from 1968... and in part 6, one of the "footnotes" (the grey shading - click on them) says:
"Surf’s Up
Mike Love picked a fight with Brian Wilson about including “Surf’s Up” on the CBS Special, as it was a departure from the standard Beach Boys repertoire."
Which would actually be a damn good trick as Brian recorded "Surf's Up" after the band had gone for that night. The session "going badly" means just that - the band didn't perform up to Brian's expectations. The session that night was being filmed and there's no mention in Oppenheim's reel notes of any such confrontation (btw, I've recently found my copy of those notes - anyone interested in my posting them here ? Caveat: they're cryptic in the extreme...).

Fantastic, AGD!
A rare thrill in my generally thrill bereft life was agreeing with Jules (via email) to exchange a couple of used paperbacks for an (electronic) copy of the text (since carelessly archived to an CD-R, MIA, presumed in the garden shed).
I hope he enjoyed ‘M*A*S*H Goes To Hollywood’ and ‘Doctor Who and The Zygons’ half as much as I enjoyed his fascinating article.

I wonder if Jules tapes any of that encounter, or just kept accurate notes?

I wonder if Jules tapes any of that encounter, or just kept accurate notes? I believe he claimed he did not use tape, it was all from memory.

How cryptic? Glad you found the notes. Maybe PM'd, if you think there should be some discretion? Thank you, Andrew.

Oh, no need for discretion... but they really are cryptic. You'll see.

My recollections is that they were recording backing vocals for "Wonderful", yodeling and such. It "went badly" because it wasn't that interesting for the home viewers. Naturally it became fake news and for decades people pushed the "Beach Boys have a fight on camera" story.
