I'm hearing Dick Dale died early this morning, California time, aged 82.

King of The Surf Guitar, gone at 81. He once said that playing live kept him alive.

Crap!
Q.D.E.P. I was 10yo when he came to Sacramento to do a promotional appearance for a surf movie in which he appeared. I don't remember the movie, but I do remember begging my mom to go to the the movie's premiere at Mather Drive-In on Folsom Blvd. They handed out 8x10's. I shook his hand. Miss Sacramento was there, too. Jam on, big Kahuna.

I'm grateful to have seen Dick Dale playing at one of the CWF shows.

Interesting factoid about DD..for the guitarists out there anyway. Dick played a lefty built guitar but with the strings upside down. That is, thickest string on the bottom. Effectively “backwards, AND upside down.” There’s more than one way to skin a cat, I guess.

Brian Wilson: "I’m sorry to hear about Dick Dale passing. Dick’s guitar playing was a big influence on all of us, and we covered “Misirlou” on our Surfin’ USA album in ‘63. Love & Mercy to Dick’s family".
Dick often stated that HE was the originator of Surf Music, not The Beach Boys.
Good article here:
www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/dick-dale-surf-guitar-king-dead-obituary-809294/
One article says he was 81, another says 82, and yet another says he was 83.

I was lucky to see Dick in concert three times in the late nineties and early 2000's. He toured with a bassist and his teenage son on drums.
He was truly a force of nature when he strapped on a guitar.
Beach Boy connection... Dick is credited on this track (with BW involvement):

What else will this year have in store for us? First Hal Blaine, now Dick Dale... RIP.
