Since my first listen of Smiley Smile I can say without a shadow of a doubt that "With Me Tonight" pops into my head more often than any other Beach Boys song. At which point, it's instantly stuck in my head and I proceed to hum the song over and over and over again. Well, today it was "Ten Little Indians". Say what you will about it, but it sure is catchy!

For some reason I've been thinking about the first tape player I ever got, a small GE cassette recorder I got for Christmas in 1971. It came with one of those small plug in microphones with the skinny cord and you could turn it on and off. I then bought some blank tapes at the local grocery store - 4 for $2.00; I think they were the Recotion brand or something like that - and I went on a taping binge. I would hold the microphone about an inch from my transistor radio speaker and record AM radio songs.
One of those early songs that popped into my head today is "Day After Day" by Badfinger. I love everything about the song - the intro, the lyrics, Pete Ham's vocal, the guitar work by George Harrison, and especially the piano at the end which I recently found out was played by Leon Russell. "Day After Day" was the group's biggest hit, reaching No. 4 on Billboard's Singles chart. The song sounded great on AM radio back in early 1972 and sounds just as fresh today.

Couple days ago at work I sang out loud, "Round round get around I get around yeah get around" and a co-worker immediately countered with ooOOOoooooo" in a high falsetto-like voice. Everybody around us on the production floor laughed, one guy applauded slowly, and another said, "Mike, don't quit your day job!"

It's some song, you know.

What can you say about Badfinger and Pete Ham. "Day After Day" still sends chills up my spine as it did when I first bought the single as a 10 year-old back in 1972.
I've read a bit about the recording of the song, and when Leon Russell was asked to add the piano bit, he came in, had them play the rough mix of the song one time, and then improvised his part in one take. George Harrison overdubbed his slide guitar, as he loved the melody Pete Ham had written and wanted to add to it.
Magic was created in the studio that day, and the song still just sounds amazing when it comes on the radio. It falls into that category of songs, like "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc, and "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. When it comes on....you just have to stop to listen AGAIN...even though you've heard it a million times before.
Dogbone
P.S. Forgot to add....I woke up hearing this song in my head this morning.....must have been a helluva dream!! I've always wondered what this song would've sounded like if
performed by the PET SOUNDS/SMILE era Beach Boys....Could they have pulled it off?? Definitely! And...I've also wondered if Gentle Giant was influenced by Brian Wilson and
his vocal arrangements. I think so!! Check it out if you don't know it.

As much as I'd love to reply Surf's Up or All This Is That it's this 1960s ditty that constantly plays around in my head. Especially that opening bass riff. OK, being the author of their biography has certainly made my mind a lot more open to it but even the wife now goes around humming it without really realising. So goddamn catchy...
