I was going to put this in the RIP thread, but I feel it warrants its own thread.
One of the all time comedic greats, John Candy, passed away 25 years ago today.
He was in a string of absolutely classic comedies. From his supporting roles in Stripes, The Blues Brothers, National Lampoon's Vacation, Spaceballs, or Home Alone to his starring roles in Summer Rental, Planes Trains & Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, or Uncle Buck, he has a resume that's pretty hard to top.
Unfortunately, since he passed away, film comedy seems to have changed a bit, and gone a little more blue (which don't get me wrong, I like a raunchy comedy, but I'd love to see some more movies like Summer Rental or Uncle Buck again).
It's been a quarter century, and you're still very missed Mr. Candy. Thanks for all the laughter.

One of the absolute greats. His scene in Uncle Buck where Macauley Culkin asks him rapid-fire questions is gold.
Let’s not forget his work on the sadly underrated SCTV either.

I thought he was excellent in JFK. Was a fan of SCTV. My two comedy favorites he did came out about the same time: The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
Everybody on SCTV was great. They are either gone or too old to get jobs. Martin Short is about the only one I still see. Agree that this kind of comedy has gone out of style.

Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are both currently starring in the Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek. It’s unfortunately hit and miss.

Planes Trains and Automobiles in particular is one of my favorite movies. It's such a great look at two people becoming unlikely friends, and always leaves me with a happy feeling when I watch it. John Candy did such a great job being annoying (so you could buy Neal wanting to be rid of him) but in a very funny, endearing way (so the audience doesn't hate him.) The first time I saw the film, the revelation that his wife was dead the whole time felt like such a gut punch. And it's a great twist because it entices you to rewatch the film with this new information in mind. Suddenly, the way he's so desperate to keep hanging around Neal becomes really sad, since he's lonely, and it makes sense why he gets so upset when Neal tries to ditch him in the diner.
I wish John Candy had played a lead role in another John Hughes movie. They made a great pair.

John Hughes wrote The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck. No kidding? I didnt know that. Well, now I know what I need to check out The Great Outdoors was a bit of a role reversal for Candy, as Dan Aykroyd played the annoying co protagonist. Hughes also directed Uncle Buck. Both movies are among my John Candy favorites.

Eugene had his good rolls, but he lost me with all those Pie films. Remember seeing only the first one, and a bit of the second. One was enough.
What channel is Schitt's Creek on? So many of the programs these days are streaming only, and I don't stream anything. I'd have to look it up, as I've never even heard of it.

I don’t think it’s on American tv; I have only seen it on Netflix.
