There is a solo version of "She Believes In Love Again" by Bruce Johnson and I have it on an official CD apparently. So I have this CD entitled The Friday Music 2007 Sampler with some random stuff on there. Randy Bachman, The Guess Who and others. And there at track 8 is "She Believes In Love Again" by ol' Brucie. So obviously upon seeing this listed I wonder if it's actually a solo recording or just a sloppy job on info for the compilation back cover. So I listen and it is definitely a different version. I can't say if it's the same version I listened to that was included in a 2009 (?) interview with Bruce. But regardless, the track has been released on this sampler, which was probably a promotional thing. Oh yeah, the notes with track said something like "teaser track for upcoming release" or something like that. So the question is, was Bruce planning on putting out some kind of solo album or compilation or something in 2007? Or perhaps this was recorded in 2005 or early 2006 for Songs from Here & Back cuz maybe he was gonna get a solo track on their along with Brian, Mike and Al? Who knows. Thinking about it now, it is odd he didn't get a track on there. I know he's not a founding member, but no offense to David Marks, Bruce seems to be a more "core" member, as it never doubted that he would be on the 2012 version of "Do It Again" while Dave was apparently forgotten at first, and brought on later. Maybe he just had this laying around? Though that wouldn't make sense if it was being touted as part of some new upcoming release, right? I just feel like Bruce hasn't seemed to want to record and/or get his music out there since, gosh...maybe the late '80s, so I just wonder why this was ever recorded. And it's not a rush job either. It sounds like a fully thought-out recording. It's a shame Bruce doesn't come to this board as I'm sure he would probably be interested to know that this is out there, as I assume he may not know that.
Anyways, I'd say that this version is MUCH, MUCH better than the version on the '85 album. This one is more piano based and much less '80s hair band power ballad. Is it worth more than a listen? Meh. I don't know. Give me time to decide that.

It's a promo-only disc.

So... is it a new recording or the stripped version of the 85 one?

Could you show us pics of the cover at least? This is very interesting. Hadn’t heard of this. Friday Music is a reissue label (recently put out Al’s Postcard on colored vinyl). Wonder if there was a Bruce release scheduled at one point?

So... is it a new recording or the stripped version of the 85 one? It is definitely a different recording. When it is from, I can't say. I'd assume probably some time in the 2000s though. Perhaps one of the "experts" or "historians" could help out with that? Anybody know how to reach Bruce. I know I'd surely appreciate it. And maybe it'd even persuade him to get whatever this project was back up off the ground. Could you show us pics of the cover at least? This is very interesting. Hadn’t heard of this. Friday Music is a reissue label (recently put out Al’s Postcard on colored vinyl). Wonder if there was a Bruce release scheduled at one point? Actually I was planning on scanning the cover at some point soon. So hopefully I'll have it posted on here in just a bit. Gonna put the daughter down for a nap and hopefully I can get it posted for ya. And as far as Friday Music, one must assume there was some kinda release scheduled at some point. Was it Bruce centered? I'd imagine maybe it'd be, but who knows? What could they put on there? I suppose it coulda been a smattering of new and old, but does Bruce really have any new stuff? Even as far as unreleased stuff, we have "If There Were Time" and "Let's Visit Heaven Tonight" and I'm not sure of anything else. Actually according to a Bruce post on Steve Hoffman (if I remember correctly), he said the only things in the can he had besides "If There Were Time" (he apparently forgot "Let's Visit Heaven Tonight" or discounted it for some reason) were some instrumentals. And then you have stuff like his and Terry's "Sealed With A Kiss" that was released on Mike & Dean's Radio Shack album Rock 'n' Roll City (along the similar Japanese version of the album Listen to the Air / American FM). And in my opinion, "Sealed With A Kiss" is one of Bruce's best recordings. It's a shame he didn't do something more along those lines. But yeah, is there any more he coulda put on there? I suppose he coulda put some California Music stuff or the earlier stuff like the Surfers' Pajama Party or Surfin' Round The World material. Or of course his random projects like The Vettes, The Kustom Kings, The Sidewalk Surfers or of course the beloved Bob Sled & the Toboggans. Now that I think of it, a nicely compiled set could do Bruce some favors. But I suppose it ain't happening. So I wasted a lot of time on that!

I think the best way to get the thread back on track would be to, say, upload it to Youtube.

My only worry is that I am not the copyright holder and I'm unsure if uploading it would get me into some legal trouble. So while I would love to, I just wanna make sure there is no issue before I do that. If I am allowed to proceed however, I will let you know g00dvibrations! No joke.

Since it did see some form of official release, I doubt there would be an issue if you uploaded it. Might as well give it a shot.

Was this covered by ESQ at all back in ’06/’07? Were there any rumblings about Bruce in the studio?

Is this just want you gleaned from Discogs or have you known about this for years. Cuz until recently I don't think hardly ANYONE in this community had a clue. Care to see if you could reach Bruce and see if he has any recollection of this recording and whatever his 2006/2007 album was gonna be?

Here is the most important content that Bruce provided on Beach Boys Britain in '06: Anybody know what the Male Ego "Not For Sale" free CD was. Or when it was from? I remember the Ego board but I have no memory of that.

When did this come out? Where could you buy it? And is there anywhere to hear this "Sports Instrumental"? Perhaps both tracks should be heard. Presumably Bruce wouldn't mind, though I'm still a little iffy about sharing with BRI and other entities watching this site. And yes, I know this recording wouldn't fall under the BRI auspices, but still. Here is the most important content that Bruce provided on Beach Boys Britain in '06: Maybe Joe R. canceled the release after Bruce called his label “very small” I get why Bruce was saying that. Trying to be self effacing about himself I'm sure. Basically saying "this is the best I could get cuz I'm not some superstar." But basically it comes off as kinda slagging his friends label. Whoops. Anyway, the label now seems like a pretty happenin' joint. Releases (or at least re-releases) from Elvis Presley, The Kinks, Bowie, and many others ain't nothin' to sneeze at. I wonder if asking around at the label could get the Bruce project back off the ground?

The 'Not For Sale' CD...

The way I recall, Bruce was pretty excited about Sports Theme when I was pulling this promo disc together. The CD was a freebie, given away at a Susan Lang convention happening in Connecticut (in the US) likely in 2003. I had arranged to get some great tracks included (2,3,7,13,14,18,19) but Bruce did most of the heavy lifting in connecting me with BB's, their family, and friends (Tracks 1,4,5,6,8-12,15-17,20-23) helping to convince them to lend me tracks for this convention freebie. Bruce also named the comp 'Not For Sale.' What blew my mind though was Bruce's inclusion of If There Were Time. That track is a lost gem from long ago.
Other thoughts... The Christian Love track 'North Wind' is exceptional, IMO. I believe Hayleigh is on backing vocals on that one too. Well written, but sung with more feel than I'd heard from the BB camp in a long time at that point. I met Mike when I gave the BB touring band all their copies of this, and I told him how much I liked Christians track. Mike took pause, read the credits (seeing multiple Love family members on the disc) and I got the impression he was going to check the disc out.
I still believe the Van Dyke demo for 'Wall Street' on this comp is far superior to the version he released later. He was super gracious to lend that tune.
I'm still honored to have had the Action Suits on the comp. Peter Bagge is my favorite graphic novel illustrator/writer, and he was in that band.

Wow. Well that is a crazy to see all that. Anybody wanna part with their Not for Sale CD? If so, I'd be willing to make a very, very fair offer.

George was good enough to send me one, way back in the 'Ego Era' I think it came with a Bolt Records decal!!! I think Bruce had been working on the Sports Theme for possible use in the Olympics...

Poked around on the Internet Archive for Bolt Records and found some more info on Not For Sale: web.archive.org/web/20070227153412/http://www.boltrecords.com:80/notforsale.html. So cool that Bruce’s “If There Were Time” was produced by Curt Becher and Gary Usher. I would also be interested if this disc were ever to end up “for sale” just to hear this… I guess I’ll have to stick to the Captain & Tennille’s version in the meantime.

Wow, I haven't seen those credits in ages. Probyn is on a track (Mello Cads), as well as Mike Daly (from late-era Whiskeytown). Totally forgot about Curt and Gary, Adrian Baker, Lucy Kaplansky, Vassar Clements... Thanks for hunting that down.
