This is my analysis of Brian Wilson’s 2008 album That Lucky Old Sun. One of my favorite concept albums and one of the greatest artistic comebacks of original material their is. Although Brian had been releasing new stuff at a decent rate since the late 90s, “That Lucky Old Sun” marks the first album in which he truly confronts his past and grows artistically. (You could say that about the 2004 redo of “Smile”, but I'm talking NEW work.) Gettin in Over My Head was a forgettable flop (it’s not even on Itunes or Spotify), Imagination was lukewarm and inconsistent, the 2005 christmas album was mostly just standard covers, 2004 Smile was great but old work, but That Lucky Old Sun was a surprising, fresh new musical and lyrical statement about hope, seeing the good in the world and overcoming adversary. Similar to Smile, it is a seemingly loosely knit concept album but just like Smile, if you look deep it is way tighter and connected than you may think. My hope here is to spread awareness on a fairly recent but underrated work of art by Brian Wilson and his band. I am here to give MY interpretation of the album. It is truly my opinion that it should be a part of Brian’s legacy, along with Pet Sounds and Smile (or at least the Love You album, its 100 times better than most of that that).
Although not a linear story, the first part of the album clearly sets a stage of California nostalgia. The later part of the album gets more serious with songs about Brian’s troubled past and paints Brian as “The Lucky Old Sun”, who is rolling around southern California heaven, having survived personal struggle. There clearly is a tone of sunny feel good vibes, similar to the Beach Boys, combined with personal turmoil and strife. It feel in many ways like a combination of all the eras of The Beach Boys. As stated, this is one of the greatest comeback and reflect-on-life albums. The main message seems to be that life is hard, but beauty and new beginnings can be found.
Track-by-Track/Lyrical Analysis
That Lucky Old Sun:
A short introduction to the album, using the 1949 song of the same name (popularity covered by Frankie Laine,.) This segment sets the tone of sunny nostalgia, personal turmoil and redemption that makes up the album. Although a cover, it still works as a beginning and theme.
But that lucky old sun's got nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day
While everyone else is working away, the sun just gets watch us all day, from a distant place, without any care. Could also be an allusion to how the sun keeps shining and moving through space, despite all the troubles each human has.
Show me that river
Take me across
Wash all my troubles away
Reference to the Jordan river in the bible. Crossing the Jordan is seen as the final step of the Israelites journey from slavery in Egypt. It was also the place where Jesus was baptized. The singer is asking for a new life, without as much work and hardship, a theme that will reoccur.
Mourning Beat:
Upbeat, nostalgic song about life in Los Angeles. First full song on the album, and it sets an exited, easy-going feel. Parts of this song also offer a bittersweet flashback of the early Beach Boy days.
The sun burns a hole through the 6am haze
Turns up the volume and shows off its rays
Start of a brand new day and of the original songs on this album. Day/Night is a recurring theme.
That lucky old sun smiles on me
Wanna slide down the mountain to the dancing sea
Singer is enjoying a care and work free day, blessed by the “lucky old Sun” giving good vibes.
Hear those guitars gently strumming
Hear those voices softly humming
Likely a reference to the early Beach Boys days and the way they harmonized. A somewhat hidden theme. Later on in the album, on “Midnight’s Another Day”, those voices take a dark turn. Here they are soft, and friendly.
It's hard to feel down
Living in this town
But you're so far away
It's a long, long way from January
All the way to December
Although this way mostly a happy song, we already get a what could be a reference to Dennis and Carl “but you're so far away”. The analogy of seasons or times of the year representing the cycle of life is common in Brian’s work. This analogy has to do with the winter solstice. January here is seen as birth, as the days are noticeably getting longer (sun shining brighter), and December as death, as the days are shortest (the sun goes dim). Pretty deep lyric for such an otherwise happy song.
Even when the sun and I head off to sleep
There's an unspoken promise that we keep
We'll pilot our light into another day
And keep a golden glow warming up L.A
This verse is saying that even during the night (symbolic for bad times), the singer has hope for another day. This also shows up later in “Midnight’s Another Day.
Room With A View (spoken word)
A narration of someone looking at LA from their room.
Like so many dancing diamonds with a beat
Each of them are home with walls of stories they could tell
Everyone is unique with their own personal experiences.
Meet the crack of dawn
A freeway starts to roll
Freeway is often used as a metaphor for life's movement, stops, and changes. Life continues to move on every mourning.
This is also literal as LA is known for having lots of freeways and traffic.
Good Kind Of Love
A typical Brian Wilson love song. Not much more than that. Has a similar melody to the Beach Boys song “The Little Girl I Once Knew”.
Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl
A nostalgic flashback to the Beach Boys song “Surfer Girl”, the first full song Brain wrote. Brian sings about how, although decades have gone by, he will always remember the subject and impact of his first song.
Summer '61
A goddess became my song
1961 was when Surfer Girl was written and The Beach Boys formed.
First love is the moment
You can't repeat, but you'll always own it
The gift she gave to me
Her timeless melody
You’ll never match the feeling of writing your first successful song, but you’ll always remember. Can also be a literal of meeting a girl. He"ll always be grateful to the girl who inspired his career start in songwriting.
So sweet
Now there's all kinds of music
The first song paved the road for many others.
So sweet
Sweet voices right from heaven
Allusion to early Beach Boys harmonies. Another reference to sweet and present voices in contrast to the dark and lonely voices later on in the album on “Midnight"s Another Day.”
So long, so long ago
Two waves gently say hello
That lyric is how I would describe the time I met Brian. Brian is comparing his relationship with the surfer girl as the moment when two waves briefly met. The ocean is large and unpredictable, so when two waves meet its usually by pure chance. The relationship with the surfer girl was just brief and passing in the vast sea of life.
We'll never say goodbye
We’re the horizon line
The horizon often represents hope for what is next. He’ll never forget the surfer girl and the influence she gave still brings him hope. He will keep moving forward and creating music. In the context of this album, it might also be saying that she brightens his day or is the sun.
Venice Beach (Narrative)
Spoken word poetry about Venice Beach in LA.
Live Let Live
An out-of-place environmental song originally meant for the movie Arctic Tale. A version with alternate lyrics was featured in it.
I am a diver, a long-line survivor
The only lyric here that connects to the rest of the album. Diving would be used as a metaphor in Midnight's Another Day “Took the dive but couldn't swim”.
Mexican Girl
Mostly a typical upbeat love song. It might be about a Mexican girl due to southern California’s proximity to Mexico and large Hispanic population.
Won't you make me smile
Light up my sundial
Sundial was an old instrument used to tell time using the sun. Singer could be asking the girl to lighten his day, a common theme in the album.
Cinco De Mayo (Narrative)
Spoken poetry about the Mexican holiday “Cinco De Mayo”.
California Role
Pretty straightforward song about trying to make it big in California. The message seems to be that even if your not famous, you can still find your role.
The Hollywood sign burns through the smog
And reawakens your dreams
Hollywood is often an icon of new beginnings and the prospect of getting famous. The singer is alluding to the hope that making it big will erase the “smog” of an unhappy life. Could also be taken literally as smog does sometimes surround the Hollywood sign.
Living under this sun, disappointment is not as bad as it seems
The “Lucky Old Sun” wipes away all disappointments.
You don’t have to climb the Capitol tower
Or play the Hollywood Bowl
Capitol records is where Brian had most of his hits with the Beach boys. The Hollywood Bowl is a famous live venue Brian has played at. He is saying that you don’t have to be as successful as him to meet your goal.
If you missed the premiere ’cause you never arrived
The best part of this L.A trip just might be the ride
Learning and exploring is good, even if you don’t get exactly where you wanted.
Roll around Heaven all day (that lucky old sun)
Comparing being part of the LA scene as being the lucky old sun in heaven.
Between Pictures (narrative)
A spoken word bit about writers and actors in LA.
Oxygen To The Brain
This is the part of the albums where the songs get more serious and reflective. This song is about the period Brian spent depressed and reclusive. The main message, coming from his experience, is to use your creativity for good and not destroy yourself with drugs or other vices.
Open up, open up, open your eyes
It's time, it's time, it's time to rise
It’s a new day. Possibly foreshadowing the next song, Midnight's Another Day.
I cried a million tears
I wasted a lot of years
Life was so dead
Simple but honest confession about the “Bedroom years.”
Let yourself go, don't carry that weight
Never destroy when you can create
Don’t carry the weight of depression when you can use your creativity to cope.
Now it don't matter what your age is
Don't you know it's just a state of mind
Let's get the jump on it before it's too late
Although Brian waited until his 50s to successfully restart his career, it's never too late.
Can't Wait Too Long
A redone snippet of an earlier Beach boys song. It repeats the words “been too long” before fading into Midnight's Another Day. There are a few ways interpret this.
The original version of this song was recorded at the end of the Brians creative peak, soon after Smile had been shelved. He could be saying that this song was the last that had the original spark and that its “been too long” since his creativity was in full blossom.
Could be a tribute to his brothers or the early Beach Boys day and how its been too long since they harmonized as friends and brothers. This will make more since when I disect Midnight's Another Day.
In the context of the album it could simply be saying that it's been to long since the singer had seen the day, foreshadowing the next song.
Midnight's Another Day
Before dissecting this I’m just going to state for the record that this song has meant a lot to me over the years. It’s portrayals of overcoming loneliness and failure have really moved me. I am mildly autistic and sometimes have trouble understanding the world, but this song is one of the few things I can always relate and turn to. It perfectly describes my life and my own past struggles with clinical depression. I even quoted this some when giving a speech to my school explaining what it's like living with autism. When I met Brian I didn't have a lot of time, but I made sure to tell him that this song changed my life. It wasn't until hearing this song that I found my voice and started talking about my condition. It’s a truly inspiring work that people of all walks of life can relate too.
There are a few ways to interpret this song. In the context of the album it represents the middle of the night when the “Lucky Old Sun” is gone. The sunny joy from earlier in the album is gone and the singer is lost in the night. But in the middle of the night, a new day emerges, new chances, new opportunities. You just have to find yourself and move forward. There are also references to Brian's past mental health struggles and how he rose out of it and restarted his career. If you look closely, this song could also be about his brothers and the Beach Boys.
Lost my way
The sun grew dim
The singer has lost his way and purpose in life. The Lucky Old Sun is dimming and he’s lost direction.
Took the dive but couldn't swim
A flag without the wind
The line about diving is very sad when you remember that his brother Dennis drowned after diving off his boat. Could also be a metaphor for trying in life, but failing to swim thru the hardships. A flag without wind is limp and has no purpose.
When there's no morning without you
There's only darkness the whole day through
Could be about missing his brothers or generically, a person missing a loved one.
All these voices
All these memories
Make me feel like stone
All these people
Make me feel so alone
The voices could mean a few different things. They could mean the voices he hears in his head. It could also a reference to the early Beach Boys harmonies and memories and how he feels sad and alone that their gone. Could also just be a generic lonely person feeling alone seeing and hearing everyone else interacting.
Lost in the dark
No shades of grey
Until I found
Midnight's another day
Shades of grey is the state where things are uncertain and confusing. Often what life normally is. Possibly a reference to a Monkees song with the title. The singer is CERTAIN that he was lost in complete darkness. He made it out when he realized that he still has time and new chances await him. Brain is likely describing his career resurgence.
Swept away in a brainstorm
Chapters missing, pages torn
Waited too long to feel the warmth
I had to chase the sun
Chapters from this person's life we're wasted running around chasing what they couldn't get. They might have been chasing the lucky old sun so they could roll in heaven, but you can’t catch the sun. A strong metaphor.
Going Home
This song seems to be completely about Brian's resurgence and triumph over personal struggle. He seems and peace and happy here now that he found a new life and day. He went home to making music where he belongs.
I'm going home (Sure don't know why I'm rollin' round heaven)
Right here he sees himself as the lucky old sun doing what he enjoys.
I heard my sound and found my smile
Living in love, yeah yeah yeah, it's been a while
Could be his reference to his 2004 release of Smile and its critical acclaim.
At 25 I turned out the light
Cause I couldn't handle the glare in my tired eyes
He’s saying that age 25 is when his problems started and his world went dark. The tired eyes line could be a reference to a line he sang, one of the last in his original voice and right before he went reclusive, on the 1970 song “Add Some Music To Your Day”.
When day is almost over
I close my tired eyes
Southern California
The final song on the album and a very bittersweet one. It concludes the album with the message that remembering the past might be sad, but you can still follow your dreams and move forward.
I had this dream
Singing with my brothers
In harmony, supporting each other
Tail winds, wheels spin, down the pacific coast
Surfin on the A.M., heard those voices again
Right here the old Beach Boys voices don’t seem sad or happy. It seems he is just reflecting on them and accepting.
The wind chimed, laughter rhymed
We had nothing but time
In Southern California
I heard the voice of my ma
Another reflection on the voices of people on longer with us.
Don't want to sleep, you might miss something
If you sleep you’ll never see the new day midnight brings.
As we headed home, we drove into a movie
Love songs, pretty girls -
Didn't want it to end
Tried to slow down the motion
So it could move us again
He might be comparing his life into a movie. He wants to slow it down so he could be moved by the good times.
Although not a linear story, the first part of the album clearly sets a stage of California nostalgia. The later part of the album gets more serious with songs about Brian’s troubled past and paints Brian as “The Lucky Old Sun”, who is rolling around southern California heaven, having survived personal struggle.
