I don't think anyone would categorize the Beach Boys as the 'coolest' rock band of all time. (I was leafing through a Rolling Stone special edition covering Led Zep, and they definitely had a cool image going) Still, being Rock stars for so long, and over such incredible decades, has afforded the individual members opportunities to have done a lot of cool stuff. Cool being subjective of course but as examples; Bruce being on Pink Floyd's The Wall album, is pretty cool Mike being in India with The Beatles, ya that's cool I think Al having bought his Big Sur property, building a studio there. I mean steps from Pfeifer Beach..that's a very cool move. Carl's Father in Law was Dean Martin..might qualify for having the coolest father in law of all time And what could be cooler than beating up a clown Anyone got some examples of cool things the boys have done? Did I use the word cool enough in this post?

I'm not advocating getting wasted or embarrassing yourself in public, but I always these were cool pictures. I would've paid good money - very good money - to be a fly on the wall there.

And then on the opposite end of the spectrum:
What is uncool about that pic? How many times in one’s life do you get to take a picture with a president and with 4 fellow entertainers? Brian got to do it 3 times. With Reagan & Daddy Bush, as well.

I don't know if you're being serious or not. I didn't mean to infer the Kennedy Center Honors were uncool. When the mentioned "the other end of the spectrum", I was referring to the venue, the wardrobe, the reason for being there, and, yes, the company as being a little classier (and that's not a shot at Nilsson, Keith, VPD, or the other...guests). Will using "classier" get me in trouble, too?

I was thinking about commenting about the Kennedy Center honors, as well. But it really comes down to this for me: for the young rebel, the Nilsson et al situation is cool; for the grown-up, the Kennedy Center situation is cool. Obviously rock music and pop culture in general fetishizes youth and rebellion, so we tend to think that way with respect to cool. But there's something pretty cool about growing up, too.

Yes, exactly, very well said.
Now I'm paranoid, but here goes another one:
I don't care that it was the Grammys. I thought it was a cool moment for the group.

You know that Who line “I hope I die before I get old”? I’m betting both Roger & Pete would call bullshit, these days. You can be old and cool. Hell, the old guys created “Cool”.

Brian Wilson appearing on SNL I think qualifies as cool as the not ready for prime time players were pretty cool.

At first I thought I was in the 'Photos' thread. Then I remembered 'Cool Stuff'.
Who is that in the first picture? Circa 1974? Looks like Van Dyke Parks, a woman, Brian, Nilsson Schmilsson, and another guy. Who is the woman and the guy?
Then next to that picture it's Brian and Keith Moon, eh? Maybe 1976?

The Brian and Keith shot apparently comes from moon’s birthday party on August 23 1974

One of the coolest things Brian ever did was this story about meeting Don Henley of the Eagles (as told in Brian’s latest autobiography):
I took a Sharpie from the table in the dressing room. There are always Sharpies around for signing things. I wrote on his record, “To Don: thanks for all the great songs. Brian Wilson,” Don was so grateful. It was almost like he couldn’t talk. He turned to leave. “Hey Don,” I said. “Wait a second.” I took the record back, crossed out “great,” and wrote “good.”
I don’t begrudge anyone for liking the Eagles, they’re just not my thing, and Don Henley’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me for whatever reason. But this story always struck me as hilarious and if it took Don Henley down a peg or two, even better!
Also, Dennis beating up Charles Manson, as described by Van Dyke Parks, is pretty cool:
"One day, Charles Manson brought a bullet out and showed it to Dennis, who asked, 'What's this?' And Manson replied, 'It's a bullet. Every time you look at it, I want you to think how nice it is your kids are still safe.' Well, Dennis grabbed Manson by the head and threw him to the ground and began pummeling him until Charlie said, 'Ouch!' He beat the living shit out of him. 'How dare you!' was Dennis' reaction. Charlie Manson was weeping openly in front of a lot of hip people. I heard about it, but I wasn't there. The point is, though, Dennis Wilson wasn't afraid of anybody!"
Though even VDP’s retelling is secondhand, but I’d like to believe it happened.

They've been documented as truth.

Goodness knows, I love Van Dyke, but the guy has proven to be something of an unreliable narrator through the years.

Some cool things about the Beach Boys:
- Bruce used to steal cable tv (not actually proven but very probable) - Pacific Ocean Blue - They met the Beatles just like was predicted in the Capitol album Meet The Beatles - Dennis Wilson never tried out for the Monkees audition - Bruce has spared us from any solo albums since the 70's - Bambu - Brian telling us that Mike was transgender in the song "Love Is A Woman" - Carl smoked cigarettes which made him look cool in a Marlboro Man sort of way - Mike beat the hell out of someone else for smoking (unfortunately it was his wife) - If you play Stars And Stripes Vol. 1 backward, it sounds really weird and may or may not contain subliminal messages - Rocky Pamplin never beat the hell out of Stephen Desper or slept with his wife - At least two of the Wilson brothers took acid - "Sound Of Free" b/w "Lady" - They managed to get rid of Bruce in the early 70's
I could think of many more but I don't want to get banned or disliked in any way.

Bruce used to ride around the California hills (breaking the fire laws), and then brag about it to English journalists.

I think it was cool that The Beach Boys were selected to play Live Aid and a couple of Farm Aids.

Does Bruce get paid every time he adjusts his mic stand? Maybe some kind of royalty fee? Did he forget how to play his keyboard?
