These are my 15 favorites--not necessarily the best, most innovative or important songs I know of, but the ones I either listen to most often day to day or were at one time my favorite song and represent an era in my life. These are in no particular order after the first five. And, with White Rabbit, it's really the performance on the Smothers Brothers show that's special to me as opposed to the album cut.
White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O'Sullivan Too Late to Turn Back Now by Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy Jones and the Shondells Busy Doin' Nothing by the Beach Boys
Canned Heat by Jamiroquai Horse With No Name by America Ooh Baby Baby by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Close to You by the Carpenters K-Jee by MFSB I'm Not Satisfied by the Mothers of Invention Flaming by Pink Floyd Runaway by Del Shannon House Burning Down by Jimi Hendrix On the Radio by Donna Summer
Also, I wanted to keep it to songs from recording artists as opposed to songs from film soundtracks or musicals or else it would be impossible to narrow things down. If I were to include songs from films though, these would be my top 5:
Rainbow Connection from the Muppet Movie Scene d'Amour from Vertigo Carbon Freeze/Darth Vader's Trap/Departure of Boba Fett (all one track) from Empire Strikes Back Pretty Women from Sweeney Todd I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady

Favorite songs/singles? A while back, I picked as many as I could that would fit on an 80 minute comp/CD. This serves as my "go-to" listen, a group of songs where I love every one, where I enjoy appreciating these great artists and their great works. Occasionally I'll tweak it with one or two songs, but the nucleus mostly remains the same.
My Favorite Things
01 I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles 02 Lola - The Kinks 03 Perfect Day - Lou Reed 04 This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us - Sparks 05 Respectable - The Rolling Stones 06 Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime - The Korgis 07 Arnold Layne - Pink Floyd 08 S.O.S. - ABBA 09 New York Mining Disaster 1941 - The Bee Gees 10 Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash 11 Still Is Still Moving To Me - Willie Nelson 12 Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan 13 Crazy On You - Heart 14 Astronomy - Blue Oyster Cult 15 The Crystal Ship - The Doors 16 Ride Captain Ride - Blues Image 17 Hero And Heroine - The Strawbs 18 Can't Get It Out Of My Head - ELO 19 Thoughts Of You - Dennis Wilson 20 Til I Die - The Beach Boys 21 Driftwood - The Moody Blues

I like Rainbow Connection OK but think it's probably the third or fourth best song on the Muppet Movie soundtrack.

@iluvleniloud I love that you listed The Rainbow Connection. LOVE that song! It was the last track on a mixtape my Godmother made for me when I was really young. It was always my favorite

@iluvleniloud Cool you namechecked "Runaway", "Close To You" & "Rainbow Connection". 3 jolly good songs by different reasons. Speaking of The Carpenters & Frog, I said it before that The Carpenters's version of "Rainbow..." lacks something endearing which the Frog's got. & this is despite me being Karen's voice fan. Frog sings it in such charming way & to better arrangement, it's too good to be covered by anybody.

Besides being far and away the number one most nostalgic song from my childhood, the Kermit original is special for a lot of reasons. The banjo is such a simple "country bumpkin" instrument that emphasizes his humble origins. Not only that, but Jim Henson isn't a great singer (not meant as an insult) so the vocal part is very simple to sing and doesn't feel overblown. It's easy for a kid hearing it--like myself--to sing along. And I often did I don't think any remakes could capture that same aesthetic.

I think Ronnie James Dio never covering The Rainbow Connection was a missed opportunity.

I've wanted to reply to this since iluvleniloud posted it but haven't been able to because for some reason I just seem to have a blank space where my brain ought to be. I wanted to just check my most played on iTunes, but because I had to move everything onto a new computer last spring, my totals started over at that time: it looks like 2018 music is far and away my all-time favorites, which just isn't close to true!
Then I started trying to figure out how to answer the question. The songs I like most now? The songs I liked most at the time they came out? (Twelve-year-old me had some very strong feelings about some songs, but 42-year-old me disagrees somewhat vehemently.) A few years ago I did a fun little exercise with a colleague where we each put together our lists of favorite songs at ages 5, 13, and 18. I could mine that, except I've since deleted the playlists, so I don't recall what made the cuts...
Anyway, I guess maybe something like this represents some songs I loved through the years. It's not a good list, though, longer than requested and certainly not thought through very well.
The Great Historical Bum - Chad Mitchell Trio I Hope That Something Better Comes Along - Muppets Jump - Van Halen We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
Livin On a Prayer - Bon Jovi Radio Station - Run DMC
Paul Revere - Beastie Boys
Nothin But a Good Time - Poison Speeding Back to My Baby - Ace Frehley
Sweet Child o Mine - Guns n Roses Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix A Day in the Life - the Beatles Brown Shoes Don't Make It - Frank Zappa
Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys Surf's Up - Beach Boys Sunday Morning - Velvet Underground Who Loves the Sun? - Velvet Underground In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel If You Find Yourself Caught In Love - Belle & Sebastian
Half Dead - The Mountain Goats Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse - Of Montreal Never Forget You - The Noisettes
I Wish I Could See You Soon - Herman Dune Merry Go Round - Kacey Musgraves Elevator Operator - Courtney Barnett
Chum - Earl Sweatshirt Where Are We Now? - David Bowie

That Queen and Led Zeppelin, not to mention late 90s and early 00s favorites like Radiohead, Beck, and Eels, or classics like Tom Waits and Bob Dylan somehow failed to make my list shows I'm an incompetent list-maker these days. Younger, list-obsessed Luther would despise and disown me.

Oh, and "Roadrunner" and "I'm Straight" from Modern Lovers. One or both of them needs to be there. "Go All the Way" from the Raspberries needs to be there, too. And "Graceland" by Paul Simon.

And--my last addition, I swear, because however little anyone cares about the actual list, I assume they care much less about any subsequent amendments--I have loved since I was a small child (2nd grade?) the song "Shipoopi" from The Music Man. That must be on my list. It. Is. Wonderful.

My list would be too heavy on 60's, since many of the stuff I listen to is from that decades, although I've been trying to explore other decades, before and after.
Anyway, here they are, the ones that represents my musical taste the best, in roughly chronological order:
- I've Got You Under My Skin (Frank Sinatra/written by Cole Porter)
- Up On The Roof (The Drifters/written by King-Goffin)
- Sukiyaki/Ue O Muite Aruko (Kyu Sakamoto)
- Downtown (Petula Clark)
- River Deep, Mountain High (Ike & Tina Turner/produced by Phil Spector)
- Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
- Strawberry Fields Forever (The Beatles)
- Tears of Rage (The Band/written by Bob Dylan)
- Break Away (The Beach Boys)
- Little Lamb Dragonfly (Paul McCartney & Wings)
- Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
- The Longest Time (Billy Joel)
