Another fine old PSF topic worth resurrecting. Initially I had great difficulty joining in, as in my view you like what you like and that's an end to it. Since then, I'd thought of one major guilty pleasure, big band music. It's a genre I've always taken great pleasure in vilifying, yet at the end of the day there's little more thrilling than a large brass section in full flight. And I thought of another today: the music of Sting. Now, I love The Police--a Dutch relative has everything by them and gave me their complete works on several cassette tapes many years ago (I still have them). But Sting the solo artist has always rubbed me up the wrong way--not as badly as Jagger, Waters and McCartney, but I still have a problem with him. (He's seems a great guy so I don't think it's his personality.) That said... every time I hear a Sting track on the radio or in a TV series, I'm completely bowled over. Does this satisfy the definition of a guilty pleasure? Whether it does or not, here's one such gorgeous song from Mr. Summer:

Just curious, what does McCartney do that bothers you?

Just curious, what does McCartney do that bothers you? It's not always easy to put your finger on these things. So I can't really help you. Sorry!

As I've gotten older, I've grown to dislike the term "guilty pleasure" as it implies that one should feel guilty for liking something.
But, in the interest of discussion, here are a few things that I like that could be called "guilty pleasures"
- Hard rock music from the 80s often labelled as "hair metal" by cynics, critics, and elitists
- Jimmy Buffett
- Sammy Hagar era Van Halen
- Mid to late 80s Genesis
- Fast food
- Mass produced American beer

Thanks John, I was gonna start this myself but kept forgetting.
I like some cheesy sitcoms. I used to see a lot of older shows through Nick at Night (after a certain time, Nickelodeon used to switch from cartoons to adult sitcoms) and TVLand. Some that I'd see were Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Diff'rent Strokes among others. As a result, I have nostalgic memories of these even though they're from way past my time.
Three's Company in particular is my favorite cheesy old (pre-90s) sitcom. It's a fun, cute show and I don't care if it's silly. Plus, it blows my mind what they were able to get away with in '77 through the height of the Reagan years. I Love Lucy and the Dick Van Dyke show are the other two I've gone out of my way to see again.
I like watching certain cartoons that have come out after my time. As long as they're charming and not mean-spirited or vacuous. Some of my favorites are The Loud House (where my screen name and avatar are from) and Steven Universe.
Im still reading a Leni Loud fanfic and surprised at how much I've been enjoying it.
I've been letting my girlfriend introduce me to some various anime shows over the last two months and have really enjoyed them. It used to be that kids got beat up in my Middle School/High School for watching anime, which is why I include that on this list.
Asuka Langley Soryu from Evangelion is one of my new top 10 favorite fictional characters. I usually don't care for shipping, but her and Shenji's love-hate relationship really captivates me.
Clarissa Darling is my all-time favorite fictional character, and her show Clarissa Explains It All holds a special place in my heart. Melissa Joan Hart had great screen pressence when she was young. I also like the 90s version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch largely because of her.
In terms of music, I like disco and Jamiroquai. The former is still something of a dirty word even 40 years later. The latter almost no one talks about and I've even seen on one or two "worst bands" lists online. I don't get it.
In terms of movies, I love Goodburger. It's stupid, but it's harmless fun and it takes me back to the 90s when Kenan and Kel were the coolest guys on TV (from my perspective.)
Even though it's a cheesy forgotten 80s buddy cop movie, I love Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Greg Hines. They have such amazing chemistry together and since I saw it at christmas time, the movie reminds me of the season, and some of my less-horrible teen years.

No one has ever accused me of being cool, so pretty much everything I like is probably considered to be in guilty pleasure territory for a lot of people.
The way I see it, I just like things that are good, regardless of genre. I like all kinds of music, books, tv, movies, etc. but if it makes me laugh or feel good, it gets elevated to my list of favourites. It doesn’t mean I don’t also enjoy serious things, but I’ll go for the easy laugh/feel good thing most of the time. I refuse to feel guilty about that.
The best cartoon of all time: The Animaniacs. Until the day I die.
Favourite food: Pizza.
And on the weekend that just past, I was out record shopping with a longtime friend and he physically blocked me from flipping through the REO Speedwagon section. He full on rock-blocked me, LOL.

Otherwise you must be feeling guilty day and night! Well...I define guilty pleasure as something where, it's not popular and I know plenty of people probably think it's stupid or weird. But Im not actively ashamed or quiet about the fact that I like them. Leni's my avatar, Ive been very open about disco, wrote a lengthy analysis of Clarissa on my blog, etc. But all the same I wouldn't exactly recommend Three's Company to a friend looking for a new show to binge, or put on disco if I were at a friend's house and given control over the stereo. You know what Im saying?

You know what Im saying? Yes, I get you. I've been defining it far too narrowly, as something I feel I shouldn't like but find myself liking anyway. Silly me--no wonder I had trouble getting started! Thanks for clarifying.

Well... how about liking these guys? I've had reactions to confessing my love of them that range from looks of "poor fellow!" to outright laughter. That strikes me as fitting the bill rather well.

Ha! Yes, according to my husband I should feel guilty. But then he likes country so he’s not winning that argument!

Yep. Being an open fan of the Beach Boys in middle school and high school was pretty much asking to get laughed at and kidded by my friends. Even in college, a lot of my friends still hated them but liked Pet Sounds only. One guy even hated Pet Sounds itself.

Any 70’s “soft rock” act w acoustic guitars and harmonies. E.G. America, Seals and Croft’s, CSN, I don’t care! Love em all. Guess we all like things that were in vogue when we felt invincible. For me, that was the mid 70’s..

Like kds, I don't feel guilty about my pleasures. But taking iluvleniloud's perspective and just defining guilty pleasure less literally, defining them as something I know others tend to think is silly or stupid or uncool, I've got some. Like many others', I suppose a lot of it is lingering warmth for the media of my youth and adolescence.
- Sitcoms like Diff'rent Strokes, Perfect Strangers, Alf, Family Ties, the Cosby Show (I know, I know ... but it's still a good show). - Plenty of hard rock and rap of the '80s. - Bad fast food. I don't eat much because a) I know it's barely food and b) I don't want to balloon, but I still have fond memories of stopping at Taco Bell late nights on my way home from bars, or picking up Arby's take-out (curly fries...) on my way home from weekend used CD- and book-buying journeys. These days it's probably less than once a year, but I admit to daydreaming about that once a year probably once a week. - Maybe my strangest one, I've had a habit of watching (usually just) one hour-long "dramedy" throughout its lifetime despite them being almost exclusively terrible, melodramatic, or both. It started in my teens, when Beverly Hills 90210 came out: I happened to catch the first episode and noted Brandon and Brenda were from a Minneapolis suburb (Wayzata, which they pronounced incorrectly as Way-ZAT-uh, as opposed to the correct Why-ZET-uh). I watched it from then on until abandoning it late in its life. I moved on to Dawson's Creek. To Parenthood. Now I watch This is Life. There were various experiments thrown in there, whether the gloriously awful Party of Five or the awfully awful Seventh Heaven. I can't even say I quite like these shows. But I watched them. Goddamn, I watched them.

Another big one for me
The Sharknado franchise. I usually don't go for the "it's so bad it's good" B movies produced by the Asylum Studio. They all have the same formula, take some B and C list stars, throw in some T&A and other the top cheesy monster / shark effects, and through in a few tributes / Easter Eggs to iconic films, and you got yourself a modern day B movie.
But, for some reason, maybe because they're so over the top, my wife and I looked forward to the new Sharknado movie each summer. And I think it says a lot for the decline in quality over at Discovery, but I grew to look forward to Sharknado way more than Shark Week (which I used to love).

The 2000 adaptation of Charlie's Angels. Also, since this is a music forum, does anyone else think the actual theme song to Charlie's Angels is awesome?

Also, since this is a music forum, does anyone else think the actual theme song to Charlie's Angels is awesome? Yes indeed--it's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing! There are so many great theme tunes/songs to be (re)discovered. Folks don't forget that the place to link all your favourite TV theme tunes and indeed all incidental music is here.

I've learned from childhood the remedy for when I'm sick or having a really bad day - watch The Three Stooges, particularly the classic Curly, Larry and Moe ones. My favorite is Disorder in the Court, and I have it on my IPod, cued up to when Curly takes the stand to testify in a case. (It can be seen online - "Curly takes the stand .") Its so over the top silly but is done perfectly. I know a lot of people aren't into that stuff but for me it's the perfect pick me up.
