Toshiba Japan planned to release Pet Sounds with 2 bonus tracks in 1987!
But Capitol US prevented that release. Finally, Toshiba issued the CD in late 1989 with a booklet dated 1987 CP28-1003. Were 1987 copies pressed or issued? What's the real story behind that japanese release?

Thanks petsite but my question is:had Toshiba issued the cd in 1987 with 2 bonus Tracks? I don't have the CD, but according to this site (written in Japanese), it was indeed released but later withdrawn because "no permission had been made". It's on Amazon.co.jp too: www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B001FXUKJM

Didn’t the eventual release have Trombone Dixie as well?

Didn’t the eventual release have Trombone Dixie as well? According to the site I referred to, it didn't ; It says it was first appeared on first US CD issue in 1990.

I picked up a copy in early January of 1989, having been acquired by a Japanese classmate of mine in graduate school, who had gone home to Tokyo for Christmas break. So she would have acquired it in late December 1988. I had been searching for a year or more by that point. When she went home for spring break in March 1989 she was able to find me 2 more copies, which I traded to friends.
It had “Unreleased BKGs” and the earlier version of “Hang On To Your Ego” with no backing vocals, but not “Trombone Dixie.”

There was a big article in Rolling Stone (the March 23, 1989 Special College Edition with Madonna on the cover), in which the Japanese release and almost immediate withdrawal was mentioned. I was able to score a copy shortly thereafter. The first U.S. (and I assume worldwide) release was in 1990, and the liner notes of that release state that it was digitally mastered at Capitol in December 1987, so that's likely what prompted the 1987 copyright date on the Japanese CD. Most likely, the limited Japanese release occurred sometime in early 1988.

Mikie you have got the second pressing from december 89 with the 87 booklet! I just noticed that. That's what I get for taking a photo off the internet at random without looking closely. I know I definitely have the original Japanese Pet Sounds CD somewhere.

There is also a Jap release of Summer Days from 1987, Greenline 2800. Yep, and that cd was released later as part of Japan's PAST MASTERS series. Trouble is, they have BUGGED and APUSA sourced from duophonic copies so they just folded them down. They sound awful. The rest of the discs sound geat. Get the PAST MASTERS if you can. Flat transfers that sound awesome.

Mine was given to me by my dear friend Chris White, and I'm pretty sure it was in late 1987. Certainly was a Green Line release with the obi strip costing 2800 yen.

Hey Everyone--
I believe I got my Japanese CD of PET SOUNDS from Wayne Johnston at Rockaway in early 1989. It was slated for release in 1987, and then it was pulled, and as many are saying finally released in 1988, with the 1987 date on copies. (I have two copies actually, and both have the 1987 dates on the booklets).
I was interning at KFOG Radio in San Francisco at this time, and M Dung, was a very popular radio talent at that station. "M" and I became good friends and talked a lot of Beach Boys and he had the "Sunday Night Idiot Show", and invited me on to the show to discuss PET SOUNDS a little bit and to also play the Japanese CD, when I had received my copy. (We later did a show about SMiLE with Dominic Priore as the guest). I remember Les Chan and so many others in the Bay Area and Sacramento being so excited to FINALLY have a copy of the album on CD. The delays were brutal!! There were so few albums by the Beach Boys out on CD at this time. It was before the Capitol Two-fers and Warner CDs had first been issued, if I remember correctly. (I think that's right!). I just did a little digging and I found my tape of the show I did, and it's from April 9, 1989.
I also remember paying $50 to get this copy, which I still have. I have it autographed by Brian and Tony Asher (not sure I got the autographs...but someone did for me...maybe Mike Grant). I did meet Tony Asher, in 1988, when Les Chan and myself took Mike Grant from Beach Boys STOMP in the UK, down to Los Angeles, and we spent a week down there meeting people (Tony, David Leaf, Alan Boyd, and so many others), and going to Disneyland and other places with Mike, his wife, and their two kids. (I also took Mike to see the RASCALS in concert during this trip). I just shake my head now, in disbelief that it was over 30 years ago!! But that trip was definitely in August of 1988. Mike Grant had come to also invite Brian to the STOMP Convention in the UK, and in September of 1989, Brian and Dr. Landy made the now famous appearance at the convention, where many were completely caught off guard. You can hear people screaming in disbelief on the audio tape, that someone gave me of the appearance!! I remember Mike calling me from the UK a few days before the convention, so excited, to let me know he had received a phone call from Dr. Landy to say they were coming over, but I couldn't tell anyone!! Are you fuckin' kidding me?? LOL!! They didn't want to announce it, because they were afraid it might not happen. You never knew what might happen!! But it did. Les and myself were very proud to know we were able to help make it happen. It was a good time for all and we later heard that Brian was absolutely amazed to be overwhelmed by the UK fans. This also helped with getting him to appear at the San Diego convention shortly there after in 1990. That trip to San Diego...well, that's another story I'll have to share another time. Some amazing times in my personal history of being a fan. I'm sure that Lee Dempsey and many others remember that crazy weekend as well!! Many of us, have been friends, and fans for way too long!!!

Mikie you have got the second pressing from december 89 with the 87 booklet! Hey celticsurfer--
Can you give details on how you can tell the difference? Both copies I have show ONLY 1987 dates. How would you know it's from December, 1989?? Since I did the radio show in April of 1989, I would guess I have at least one of the "early" pressings from 1988. So, how can I confirm, that it's an earlier pressing and not the one issued in December, 1989? Doesn't make sense to me--How could my first copy be from December 1989, when I
did the radio show in April of 1989? Must be one of the first pressings issued in 1988.
Is it the back insert sheet, lower left corner, where it shows a "89" and the "12" in the bottom numbers? X-89-12-....
Thanks, Dogbone

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but I think it indicates the date until which CD rental stores are not allowed to rent the CD, not the release date (which is, according to the site I linked to above, Dec 21, 1988).

SO it makes sense now The first pet Sounds on cd with 2 bonus Tracks released in December 88 with a 87 booklet. So we have all that precious item. Thanx Wata for the explanation about that 89-12 date.

Thanx Wata for the explanation about that 89-12 date. I agree. Definitely makes more sense. If that X-89-12 was the Release date, meaning December 1989....there is no way I would have been able to have my copy earlier, and have it for the radio show on April 9, 1989. Both of my copies are the Dec. 1988 release with the 1987 dates in the booklet/covers etc. I'm guessing, they pressed it up...went to release it...it got delayed...they stored the copies they made, and then when they had clearance to release it, they did. Simple really. Dogbone
