Because I'm one of the new music guys.
To contradict that, Weezer (a band I don't really like) released The Teal Album (of covers, making them not new). Mostly '80s, some '70s, a little '60s and '90s. So that's a fitting, not-fitting way to start the thread. Eh? Eh.
I think I like the new Deerhunter album and the new Sharon Van Etten albums, too. As referenced elsewhere, Vampire Weekend's pre-album singles seem nice.
So there you have it. 2019 is underway. (If you're weird and want my 2018 playlist, I can provide. I wasn't on any boards when I was finishing it up. But that's my seventh annual such project.)

This will likely be the first Weezer album I can't be arsed to at least check out. I just can't do it anymore. Rock music seems pretty dead as of 2018, at least as far as critical best-of lists go; I think I only checked out albums by Ghost, We Are Scientists, Parquet Courts and Greta Van Fleet last year. None of them really stuck if I'm being honest, and as a result I spent a lot more time listening to the new releases from Kanye, Kid Cudi and L'il Wayne. I really enjoy what the Italians Do It Better label has been putting out, but I'm backlogged on their releases. Eventually I'll get caught up there. Would love to see your list!

I agree about your assessment of rock in 2018, except I really liked the Ghost album, albeit not as much as their first three. Greta Van Fleet is painfully unoriginal. For 2019, I'm looking forward to new music from The Who. I really liked their 2006 Endless Wire album. There are rumors of new music from Guns N Roses and Van Halen, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Greta Van Fleet bores me. I agree with kds: just too derivative.

I might be able to accept GVF appropriating Led Zeppelin's sound if they had songs to back it up. But, to my ears, its very paint by numbers.

Totally agree. On the other hand they're very young, so they have time to develop their own sound over time. It'll be interesting to see whether they do, because I do think they're quite talented. The question will be whether that talent extends beyond what seems like mimicry into a more unique voice.
It's kind of ironic, considering Zeppelin themselves were not opposed to some, shall we say, heavy borrowing. And plenty of other bands started out sounding like X before developing into themselves.

The Mountain Goats will release In League With Dragons (which sounds like an album fitting for kds, though it won't be) in late April. "Younger" is out as a first single, and I'll admit it's not immediately grabbing me. But I'm literally halfway through my first listen, and these things tend to grow on me.

The use of dragons in music today doesn't mean what it used to. (ie. Imagine Dragons). Speaking of new music, not sure if this will result in a 2019 release, but apparently, Brian Johnson has returned to AC/DC to do an album.

Do you think it's going to be a B Johnson in studio, A Rose on tour kind of situation going forward?

Also, please refrain from saying "Imagine Dragons" in my presence. My gawd, what a load of crap they are (from the admittedly little I've been able to put myself through).

I suspect they were formed by somebody in Nickelback's camp so nobody would ever call Nickelback the worst band in history ever again

Just a hunch, but if GNR do decide to go into the studio as has been rumored, I don't see him pulling double duty.

Congrats.

As per usual, my contributions to the new music of the year thread will include bands and artist who all predate my birth.
AC/DC apparently have a new album almost ready for release. Not only is long time vocalist Brian Johnson back, but it will include some guitar that the late Malcolm Young recorded.

Motown is releasing Marvin Gaye's never-released follow-up to the 1971 classic What's Goin On?, titled You're the Man. While I am a fan of Gaye, I have nothing approaching encyclopedic knowledge of his catalogue and honestly had no idea such an album existed (or, er, didn't exist). If I had, I'd have added it to the great lost albums, thread, most likely. I'm really curious to see what's on it, as well as what from it might have been released subsequently versus what has remained unreleased to now.

Craig Finn (frontman of the Hold Steady) has another solo album coming out this spring. I liked his 2017 We All Want the Same Things and last year's Hold Steady singles, so I'm moderately optimistic.

That reminds me of a maybe not-quite-as-polished Splittsville Pet Soul kind of thing. Actually, parts of the melody really remind me of a specific song, "Tuesday Through Saturday.

I think I like the new Deerhunter album
Much to my surprise I'm really enjoying this the more I listen to it: a real grower. I think I'd only liked one or two Deerhunter songs before this album. I had sampled enough to buy this one, but still wasn't in love with it or anything. I doubt I ever will be, but I keep thinking "oh, what's that cool song?" and looking to see, sure enough, it's Deerhunter.

Solange semi-surprise-dropped a new album today, When I Get Home. I really liked her 2016 R&B/soul/pop/jazz album A Seat at the Table and so downloaded this one without listening. Looking forward to it.

Just discovered this this morning and I love it! (Pre-ordered.) Fans of '60s pop might like the song, while fans of horror might like the video.

If this doesn't end up my favorite song of the year, I'll eat my hat.
(I'm not wearing a hat.)
