One of my favorite childhood memories is gathering in front of our family television on Thursday evening August 5, 1976 to watch the one-hour NBC TV special on the Beach Boys.
The summer of ’76 was a heady time for Beach Boys fans as they were everywhere – record charts, television, radio, newspapers, and magazines.
The television special was filmed in June 1976 and in a newspaper interview at the time with producer Lorne Michaels he was quoted “we’ve shot approximately 25 hours in hopes of finding 50 wonderful minutes”.
Does anyone know what happened to all that unused footage? I know a few minutes of it were seen in the American Band video. Where is the rest?
Hopefully, it wasn't destroyed as it would be a fascinating insight into the band at that time.
I bet AGD or Howie may know.

The educated guess is that it is in the group's archives.

The BBs have a lot of video from the 70s and 80s in their archives. If you read the new ESQ there is an article about Peter Marshall, who directed a documentary about Mike’s Waves project in 1977 that remains unreleased and the MIU documentary Our Team that also remains officially unreleased. Marshall noted in the interview that he also filmed Mike’s Celebration side project and that he went on the BBs Feb-March 1978 tour of Australia-New Zealand and Hawaii and filmed a lot of that and then went on their April 1978 tour too. Only some poor quality clips of that have surfaced so there is probably a lot of footage in the vaults. The question is whether there is a financial incentive to put that stuff out. Obviously I’d love to have nice quality copies of all that stuff but how many non fanatics care about footage of the BBs in early 1978? It was a rough time for Carl and the beginning of another slow decline for Brian and a rapid decline for Dennis-so probably not the BBs at their best-though still really fascinating to fans. As to the Waves-Celebration footage-I’d buy it but most people could probably care less. Now the 15 Big Ones period captured the BBs at a high point as a live act so some of that 1976 footage is probably golden but again from a strictly financial aspect I don’t know that the general public is clamoring to see it. Could be cool to include a lot of the footage as part of a 15 Big Ones-Love You package as a special treat maybe?

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I wish that the copyright extension releases also included footage.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I wish that the copyright extension releases also included footage. I have no doubt that idea was seriously considered, but was eventually abandoned because it would have taken too much $$$, time and legal maneuvering to obtain and restore the various film and video segments the archive set producers wanted to use.

I recall unused NBC special footage being featured in An American Band (I think from Brian's birthday party) so probably archived.
