These are so cool! I actually never have seen that one for Got My Pay / Carnival so thanks for sharing that one! Comment to nts1drums: You can hear Got My Pay with Carnival by listening to my book (addendum to part one). ~swd

Hey Stephen...is it still possible to purchase your book?

Hey Stephen...is it still possible to purchase your book? Craig, what Stephen means by his "book" is actually a book-like format integrated into his Study video. If you watch the video, text will appear and tell his story and history of those particular songs and albums. 'I Just Got My Pay' and 'Carnival' are included in an 'Addendum to Part 1', which is a Sunflower era study-video that was previously hosted here in the forum. If you haven't watched 'The Beach Boys 1969 album 20/20 Study video', I encourage you to do so. It's worth your time. Just follow the login and password instructions in the 'Stephen W Desper Study-Videos' section at the top of the forum.

What is going on with that master tape of Surfer Girl? Why was the title track replaced - and what with? The date seems to say May 67.

According to Steve Hoffman, in a post from 2006, he stated the following: Heck, Chuck remixed SURFER GIRL in 1967 both mono and stereo (old tape was worn out). No one even noticed the remix. This is probably the first time it's ever even been mentioned in print.

So that would mean, there is no original release of 'Surfer Girl' in Mono or Stereo that's been put to CD/Digital? Everything release since 67' has used the new remixes? That's kind of insane to think about. Leaving the only original sources on the original pressings, which were not great quality pressings to begin with. Is that correct? Anybody up for a needledrop comparison to spot variations?

Again, from Hoffman:
When a big chunk fell out of the stereo SURFER GIRL song in 1967, Western remixed it from the three-track and inserted it back in to the stereo master reel. It sounds identical to the original, even better; less compression.
Why they would remix the mono version is beyond me. Also, the binaural mix heard on the 1970s single and the first two editions of Endless Harmony was delivered at the same time as the mono single master to Capitol. Why Brian delivered that to Capitol is a puzzler.

That's the guy who had the Shut Down Vol. 2 Reels, Lance Robison. Yep! Lance Robison sold to Capitol Records three reel-to-reel “work” tapes from the Beach Boys’ 1964 recording session for Shut Down Vol. 2. These tapes contained the multi-tracks from which the original mono recordings were mixed. We now have stereo versions of “Don’t Worry Baby” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” because when Lance was 13, he came into possession of these work tapes and held onto them for 43 years before selling them to Capitol. I wish there were more multi's like this found.

Ok, here is one I NEED MR. DESPER to chime in on. What does the SUNFLOWER master have a CAPITOL label on the tape box?
EDIT: Alan Boyd did it! Thanks to Al S for that!

'cos Alan Boyd (AB) put it in a Capitol box while going about his BRI archiving duties.

Yeah, like I would know nuthin', but I would be surprised if the mono did get remixed in '67 - I think Hoff may have gotten things mixed (ha ha) up - the rest of his quotes only focus on the stereo elements (Chuck did a stereo remix to reinsert into the stereo tape after a big chuck fell of the original stereo mix in '67). If someone is able to pop the lid on the mono tape and confirm a '67 era splice or otherwise, then we'll have world peace. Wonder why they had it out of the box in '67 anyway?

Hoffman may be correct about this, but I would approach his statements with caution, considering his tendency to have a questionable relationship with the truth.

Ok, I am going to do the following this weekend. I am going to check the past masters SURFER GIRL in stereo from Japan that uses a 1987 DUB of the US master and is a flat transfer. I will then compare it with the 1991 CAPITOL YEARS CD boxset from Japan that was mastered from a sub-master assembled in the UK in 1980 from their master tapes. I don't know if they received a new transfer of SURFER GIRL after the 1967 remaster, but I don't think they did. I will then compare the two. Hopefully there is a difference.
