There's been some threads about specific bands that people have started on this forum already, but I thought it might be a good idea to have all of us introduce our musical tastes in one thread.
My favorite genres are: psychedelic rock, progressive rock, sunshine pop, soft rock, disco, funk and soul.
Some of my favorite bands are: Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, the Carpenters, the Supremes, Jamiroquai.
Some bands whose work I enjoy but I haven't checked out their whole discography yet to be able to call them my favorites: King Crimson, Queen, Parliament, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, the Undisputed Truth, Todd Rundgren. (These groups' albums are what I'm trying to check out now.)

Three apiece off the top of my head...
Bands: Captain Beefheart and his/the Magic Band The Sonics U2
Artists: Gary Numan Frank Zappa Kate Bush
In terms of bands/artists in the pop/rock world, the genre I'm least fond of is country.

Right now, it's all about The Lemon Twigs for me. I think they are the most talented writers and performers of their age group on the planet. Lemon Twigs - If You Give Enough

This kind of thing is never easy to do. How deep do you go on the lists, etc.
Legacy artists: Beatles and their members
Big Star/Alex Chilton Captain Beefheart
Elvis Costello
Bob Dylan Marvin Gaye Jimi Hendrix Buddy Holly
Michael Jackson
Prince Queen/Freddie Mercury
Velvet Underground/Lou Reed
Stevie Wonder Frank Zappa/Mothers
Vaguely contemporary artists (e.g. 90s onward, so still old as fuck for the most part because I'm getting old) Courtney Barnett
Belle & Sebastian Earl Sweatshirt
Fiery Furnaces Herman Dune Iron & Wine
Kacey Musgraves The Mountain Goats
Of Montreal Parquet Courts
Wilco
There are a million acts over the past couple decades I like (or have liked), but can't really lump in among consistent favorites: Eels, Deerhunter, Lemon Twigs, MGMT, Domo Genesis, Okkervil River, Your Old Droog, Janelle Monae, Frank Ocean, Brother Ali, D'Angelo, HAIM, Jens Lekman, the Shins, Kendrick Lamar, and on and on.

Lots of stuff, but the last few years have brought me back to jazz and I'm reminded of the days (not that long ago) when I could see (reasonably cheaply) major American jazz sidemen who worked with the greats on mini tours of the UK. Probably all dead now.
Outside of jazz, the artists who occupy most space on my CD shelves (other than the Boys) are Paul Simon with or without Garfunkel (and if I say I prefer without, it doesn't mean I dislike S&G), Dylan, Steely Dan (together and apart), Van Morrison, Prefab Sprout, The Blue Nile, Loudon Wainwright, Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Springsteen, John Hiatt, Graham Parker (with or without The Rumour), Stevie Wonder, Rickie Lee Jones, Ron Sexsmith, The Band and the late great American philosopher, Thomas Earl Petty.

It's hard for me to pick specific genres because I listen to so many different types of music, but the best I can narrow it down to is pop rock and easy listening. I'm also probably one of the few people here who listens to new music as well.
Favorites: Beatles, Rolling Stones, Four Seasons, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Kacey Musgraves, Imagine Dragons, Colony House, Lady Gaga, Chainsmokers.
Other artists I listen to regularly: Elvis, Dean Martin, Jan & Dean, Elton John, Monkees, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Eagles, Camilla Cabello, Katy Perry, Eminem, Panic! at the Disco, Walk the Moon, AJR, Coldplay.
If any of you have an interest in checking out some new music, I have three albums to recommend:
Golden Hour - Kacey Musgraves (2018) Only the Lonely - Colony House (2017) Origins (deluxe) - Imagine Dragons (2018)
If any of you give these a listen, let me know what you think. Good or bad!

Good or bad! It's nice to see someone else give Lady Gaga some credit on the forum. Admittedly I wouldnt put her on my shortlist of favorites but she's a phenomenal talent. I listen to new music too, just not enough to know specific bands. One of my friends and I used to go out to clubs and see current artists all the time. She knew them, I didn't, but was still happy to go. That tradition ended when we both got SOs and she ended up moving a distance away. Anyway, my favorite that she turned me onto was Jukebox the Ghost.

When Joanne came out a couple years ago I was converted into a big fan. Diamond Heart and John Wayne are top notch songs. Of course she was great in A Star is Born as well. I had never heard of Jukebox the Ghost. I like what I'm hearing so far, so thanks for pointing them out to me. Turns out they're playing here in Cincinnati at the Bunbury Music Festival, so I might have to grab a ticket.

I didn't like her at first because I wrongly assumed she used the eccentric persona to hide a lack of talent. But then I heard that apparently she used to be bullied in school too and is vocal about how damaging it is to people, and that made me begin to look at her a lot more sympathetically. I started to realize I was being a hypocrite by looking down on her for her weird antics while glorifying Brian's during the SMiLE sessions and other artists' 60s craziness. If there was any lingering reservations, it was knocked out of me when my girlfriend and I saw the remake of A Star is Born a few months ago. That's one of the very few movies from this decade which legitimately blew me away. No problem. I'll check out your recommendations in the near future!

Lady Gaga was sensational in that movie and I really liked the album with Tony Bennett. I should really check out her other stuff.

I liked her Joanne quite a bit.
Could’ve done without the SXSW vomit show.

While I can't say I'm a fan of her music, I'll say that I have far more respect for Lady Gaga that about 98% of the nameless pop tarts out there today.
I used to think it was all "style" over substance, and at the beginning of her career, it kinda was, but I think she's a very talented singer, far moreso than I ever gave her credit for.

Cincinnati Kid....Golden Hour is great. She was in Milwaukee with Little Big Town last April and she opened with Slow Burn and it was outstanding live. I bought the CD at the merchandise table right then as it had just been released. If you read the liner notes Golden Hour was inspired by the solar Eclipse and that is part of the theme throughout...I thought that was cool. I'm already a fan and own all of her albums except the early self released stuff. Would have gone to see her in Madison last week but I'll wait 'till she is back in Milwaukee as I know she will be.....Nice list of fave's too...I'm also a fan of many of those artists.
