Amazingly The Beach Boys In Concert album, which was released 50 years ago today (Nov. 19, 2023 VS Nov. 19, 1973), has yet to be rated on this board.
Personally, I think it's a great album, and is recorded and performed well. It's the last time you'd hear such an even mix of oldies, new songs, and album cuts from the post Pet Sounds era. It's hard to believe this album came out seven months before Endless Summer, which went to number one and changed everything for the band. This album did go to number 25, and earn a gold record.

It's an underrated live album that showcases perhaps the band's best touring period. It goes without saying how important adding Ricky and Blondie into the mix really was. They just need to remix the damn thing proper and expand the track-listing to throw in more Dennis material like "I've Got A Friend" and "River Song".

I probably play this album more than any other, especially in the car. It is a great snapshot in time when the band decided to put an edge to their music. I saw them three times between March 1972 (Philadelphia) and April-November 1973 (Phoenix). It was a fun time to be a fan of the band. You could watch their career slowly rise from the ashes of late 1969 and 1970. By Autumn of 1974 they went from small venues to heading up outside venues. Watching Dennis return to the drums in tandem with Bobby Figueroa was a cool site.
Anyway, In Concert has a great mix of old and new songs, great new arrangements and Carl Wilson shines throughout. I gave the album a 10, even without Jumpin’ Jack Flash, which closed all 3 shows that I attended.

I gave it a 10 as well. I consider it life changing for me. I know that sounds extreme but it’s true. As a 14 year old, I heard my local college radio station play all of side 2 on the morning after Thanksgiving 1973, 3 days after the release. I begged my father to drive me to Sam Goody’s in the mall. I then played all 4 sides constantly, for weeks on end. About a month after Thanksgiving, I saw the band live at the same college - Seton Hall in NJ. That was really life changing. Best BB show of the dozen I’d go on to see. Please release a box set of those 1973 shows that were recorded. I have my $$$ ready.

I’m giving this one a nine. It certainly is a great album and I would say the best of the original live albums. Like many, my favorite time for the band as a live act. It was my first BB album so I think I was a little under appreciative of the deep cuts, looking back now to have all those Holland songs, Let the Wind Blow and YSBIM all on one live album is quite something. I also like the album packaging, pictures etc. Only irritation is that it does not list the full track listing in sequence on the cover. Just a minor point though.
The reason this does not quite get a ten for me is that I have always felt the album is a bit disjointed. It does not feel like it has the flow of a concert from start to finish - it feels more like a collection of live songs. Ok, that is what it is but hopefully you get what I mean. I don’t feel a need to listen to it from start to finish and rarely do (unlike the Carnegie set for example) but instead will dip into different tracks. And of course, maybe a little more Dennis. Still a great album nevertheless. If there was a 9 ½ I would go with that.
I agree with filledeplage though, a box set would really polish this off into something even more special.

Wouldn’t it be nice to get a download of all the 1972-1973 concerts that were professionally taped to make this live compilation - the way they did for all those 1967 concerts?
