Jann Wenner on Smiley Smile (released 56 years ago today!) "'Heroes and Villains,' one of their latest releases, is also on the new album. But for some reason, it just doesn't make it. The same is true for the rest of the songs, they just don't move you. Other than displaying Brian Wilson's virtuosity for productions, they are pointless." His removal couldn't have happened to a more deserving man. Ironic, because Smiley Smile displays the least amount of production (other than Heroes and Vibrations), not Brian’s virtuosity for productions. And yet it’s the simple melodies that do move you.

Well…RS started in San Francisco and from the start it was a supporter of that scene, which was pitted against the established LA scene. Hence Wenner was a big proponent of the Airplane and the Dead and downgraded the BBs, Byrds and the Doors. What’s interesting is that today those three bands have a legendary status and many of the San Fran bands have declined in influence. The Airplane may have taken off at times but their records are pretty dated rather than timeless and the Dead is the definition of a band that you are either a big fan of or not interested in at all. I never liked them-though their album’s are painless. In concert they went in for interminable free form jams, which people like Wenner perceived as making them superior to “slick” LA bands like the BBs, who went in for tight solos rather than long, improvised jams. They liked a band that noodled around onstage for three hours rather than one that faithfully reproduced their records in a tight hour and A half

That dude was always a turd. Not a fan of "cancel culture" as a whole but can make an exception over this.
