Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the world premiere of Brian Wilson Presents Smile at London's Royal Festival Hall. Were you there? If so... why ("well, because..." isn't an acceptable response)? How were you feeling before the show, during and after? Did it live up to your expectations? Now, almost twenty years on, how do you feel about it all? These are not idle questions: next year David Leaf & Omnibus Books are publishing a 20th anniversary BWPS history/appreciation/celebration and your thoughts on the above would be greatly appreciated. Er, in about 150 words. A chance to be a part of the album's history, and to see your name, and words (all 150ish of them) in print. Of course, it won't be possible to include every submission so go, write, excel. Submissions to me, at bellagio@btinternet.com - you know you want to. Oh, and the deadline for this is October 1st, or 23 days from now One last note: The essays that don’t make into the book will be posted online at either the publisher or David Leaf’s website. PS: this invite isn't restricted to members of this forum. We're all fans, irrespective of where we post.

I wasn't, sadly, but I was at the Newcastle gig, which was wonderful. Best BW gig I've seen ( second being the Glasgow one from his first solo tour) and it was at the City Hall rather than The Sage in Gateshead. Spotted Martin McAloon from Prefab Sprout; apparently Paddy couldn't make it because of hearing issues. Must have been bummed out bearing in mind how much of a Jones he has for Brian. Also saw Ray Laidlaw from Lindisfarne. The shit local newspaper, The Evening Chronicle, gave it no coverage at all... No surprise there.

I'm betting there will be a BWPS (no, that's not "Brian Wilson Pet Sounds") 20th anniversary box set. What would be on it? The original album (no, not THAT one), studio outtakes, a live recording of BWPS...or maybe several live performances of BWPS, plus the greatest hits sets. After all, these boxes have to be massive these days! The one I'm really waiting for, though, is MLPSIP - Mike Love Presents Summer in Paradise. They could include all the various mixes of the album songs. "It's a love thing!"

I am helping David out trying to make this book awesome. If you have a story, please send it in to Andrew's address above. Those stories that don't make the book will be up on either David's site or the publisher's site. Details are being worked out.
I have also been helping out on the documentary which I hope will be good as well. They were certainly asking the right questions and taking any info I had to heart. Fingers crossed!

I was at the Bristol show- first one outside of London. Travelled from the US to be there, bought day-of-show released seats, just behind the front section on the floor. Just behind me was Dave Edmonds and an attractive blonde. My 19 year old British nephew (and ride) was knocked out by the show, exclaiming "I was born in the wrong decade". I asked Dave Edmonds how he liked the show and he seemed very emotionally moved.

To the powers that be,
Please leave no stone unturned for an archival release.
For obvious reasons there won’t be much or anything to pick up from the cutting room floor. But alternate mixes and so forth could be great and revealing. Perhaps a remix. Perhaps a real harpsichord overdub who knows.
One of the most vital releases of Brian’s career and must be treated as such, despite controversies and misgivings.
In any case will look forward to the book.

There were instrumental backing tracks released in various places, and it would be nice to have these collected onto one CD.

Never saw the premiere in London but did catch the performance when Brian came to Atlanta. Here's hoping for the 20th anniversary that they re-release the thing in physical format again (especially in vinyl). And maybe as a bonus they tack on the live performance for a deluxe edition.

What a great opportunity for those who attended to reconnect with the original event - get those keyboards cranking.
I'm really looking forward to the book, David and collaborators!

David Leaf wanted me to pass this on so......
Hello, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the world premiere of Brian Wilson Presents Smile at London's Royal Festival Hall. Next autumn, timed to celebrate the anniversary release of the 2004 album, Omnibus Books will be publishing a 20th anniversary BWPS history/appreciation/celebration that I’m writing. And curating. Think of this book as an oral history. The people who made the music are going to primarily tell the story. But we need to include fans too. Were you at the World Premiere? If so---How were you feeling before the show, during BWPS and afterwards? What does it mean looking back? If you went to any other show at Royal Festival Hall that February, or any other show on the tour, I want to hear from you. What do I want to hear? What were you thinking before the show, during the show, and afterwards? Did it live up to your expectations? And now, almost twenty years on, how do you feel about it all? What does Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE mean to you? If you saw the Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE tour, we want to hear from you. Were you at Carnegie Hall? Disney Hall? Or at any of the North American dates, any of the UK shows or any of the dozen countries around the world where Brian and his incredible band played BWPS? To make room for as many of these as possible, I need a short reminiscence. About 150 words. Now, as we began posting about this yesterday, I'm very glad to have already heard from some of you who want to be part of the book, very gratified that you shared your wonderful memories. Unfortunately, it won't be possible to include every submission in the book. Those that don’t make the book will be on the publisher’s or my website after the book is published. If you want to be part of the book, please send your thoughts to bwps20th@yahoo.com And, BTW, it can be a short memory too. FYI…some of you have posted at my Facebook page. Some have sent me your memories via DM. Or email. Please don’t send it like that. I want as many fans as possible to be part of this. A few of you have sent in pieces longer than 150 words. Whatever the length you send, we'll edit highlights from the pieces to make room for as many space permits. Any piece that’s edited will be posted in entirety on the website. Remember…please email your memories at this special email address:bwps20th@yahoo.com Thank you! David Leaf
