So this dreich afternoon I’m in the kitchen making marmalade while listening to “Top of the Crops”, a live album by U.K. West Country band The Wurzels.
It includes their 1970s classic Combine Harvester but in a disco-fied version that’s fun but not a patch on the original which, as a kid, tempted me to drink cider, which became my drink of choice for some years, until its price rose above £1 a pint.
The song put me in mind of other great songs covered by the original artists, in inferior quality.
Top of my list are two songs: first, Mike Love’s remake of Do It Again with John Stamos and Mark McGrath:
And Lindisfarme’s remake of Fog on the Tyne with Paul Gascogne:
I suppose you could add The Beach Boys’ Here Comes the Night into the (disco) mix too.
Any other artists dumped on their own legacy in such a way?

Chicago absolutely murdered 25 or 6 to 4 around 1986
Anthrax bizarrely recorded an album of Joey Belladonna era classics with John Bush on vocals, about a year before reuniting with Belladonna
The Police's Don't Stand So Close to Me '86 is pretty awful

Veeeeeeery harsh Mr Sheriff! 🤣🤣😂 Ye gods, yes--a cruel thrust indeed! Gene Vincent rerecorded "Be-Bop-A-Lula" in 1962 in what sounds like a desperate endeavour to cash in on the then-current Twist rage. Needless to say, this version has sunk into rightful obscurity and the original from 1956 with its electric atmosphere and stunning guitar work by the great Cliff Gallup reigns supreme.

Many of the compilation albums of 80s band Starship that are currently doing the rounds are re-recorded versions made a few years back. The results are not pretty.

There's a ton of re-recordings of British Invasion hits that were cobbled together for cheapo CD collections in the 80s and 90s.
Also, bands like KISS, Foreigner, and Journey have recorded full discs of greatest hits with their current lineups.
Oh.....and Mike Love did that too. Actually, you can make a huge list of unnecessary and inferior BB related re recordings, from Here Comes the Night '79 to Little Saint Nick '18.

The topic title is less appropriate here, given the circumstances. Jeannine Deckers aka The Singing Nun has one of the most tragic histories in all pop. In 1982 she recorded a disco version of her 1963 smash hit "Dominique". But please read the wiki... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Singing_Nun
