Malcolm shares intimate details about the filming and editing of An American Band and provides a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes stills from the documentary. Also featured is a new interview with musician/songwriter Jeffrey Foskett, as well as “Chasin’ The Sky” producer Spencer Proffer, and singer/songwriter Rand Bishop. esquarterly.com/esq-store/fall-2023-issue-143-the-beach-boys-an-american-band-chasin-the-sky/Issues will be available for individual purchase beginning Friday, Sept. 15. This looks to be a very interesting issue. I remember waiting in anticipation of the release of An American Band. It never made it to theaters is my area, but it did make it to HBO, if I am remembering correctly.
I always loved The Beach Boys performance of Chasin’ The Sky. The vocals are stunningly beautiful. It will be great learning more about that period and how the Boys came to record that song.
Also, I’d like to thank David, Lee and all of the contributors to ESQ. What a fantastic resource that we have here. We as fans are very fortunate that we still have a magazine that is dedicated to the world of The Beach Boys. For those of you who do not have a current subscription, please give a second thought to subscribing. Time is marching on and it is nice knowing that there is still a resource out there that continues to keep us informed about their past, present and future.

The new issue arrived today -- what a great read! Lots of new details on a lesser-known era. Kudos to David & co.

Always kind of dug "Chasin' The Sky". It's definitely a product of its time, but it features a really nice lead vocal from Carl and some lively background vocals from the band. Wish this song along with all the other out-of-print songs they did from the 80's would find their way onto a BB compilation with some proper remastering. Paul McCartney recently put out a box set featuring all his singles (Check out The 7” Singles by Paul McCartney on Amazon Music music.amazon.com/albums/B0BLJ1YM48?ref=dm_sh_hIiUEYOcknJJkgisYd1RfYJA0)...surely the Beach Boys could offer something like that too...🤔

I just finished reading the interviews with Spencer Proffer & Randy Bishop. I didn’t realize that Bruce was the guy who brought The Beach Boys in to record Chasin’ The Sky. The recording process really mirrored the disjointed nature of the band following Dennis’ death. Interesting to learn that Brian, Al, Bruce, Jeff Foskett and Randy Bishop recorded the backing vocals in California, while Carl recorded his lead in Colorado. And what about Mike’s behavior and Gene and the Blow Boys in the control room?
Thank you David for the interesting interviews..

The guy who's credited with getting Brian off of hard drugs is in the back room getting his freak on! You know what would make a good followup to these two issues? An issue devoted to the immediate post-BB85 period. I wonder if there was ever any serious talk about recording another album after BB85? Sure, it made sense for the 25th anniversary album to be a greatest hits with a couple of new songs, but I never understood why they didn't make any effort and recording a new studio album in 1987/88. The only guess I have is that Brian was making his solo album, and they didn't want to do a BB album without him. Landy probably would have wanted a producers credit, and insist that only he could be alone in a room to write songs with Brian. Sometimes I wish Carl had just said "f*** it" and made another solo album.

I just thought it might be nice to approach the Made in USA/Still Cruisin' era, knowing what we know now about the 1985 album.
