First song I heard on the excellent Boom Radio this morning of June first had this wondrous chorus: "Oh, gimme The Beach Boys And free my soul I wanna get lost In your rock & roll And drift away..." A fine way to start the day. Always thought the middle-eight was particularly apposite to my ongoing affliction: "And when my mind is free You know a melody can move me And when I'm feelin' blue A guitar's comin' through to soothe me Thanks for the joy that you've given me I want you to know I believe in your song And rhythm and rhyme and harmony You've helped me along, makin' me strong"

No truer words were ever sung. Music really does soothe the soul and the mind too.

Isn't it 'give me the beat boys'?
Although I much prefer the mishearing.

Dobie Gray - "Drift Away" Some things are worth mishearing on purpose! Even used it in my message board profile signature for a while. Maybe I'll use it again.

It is yeah, the word ‘mondegreen’ in the thread title means ‘a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song.’ Had to look the word up myself to understand it 😅 Oh and had to look up apposite also! Thanks AGD for giving me two new words today! 🙏 I agree, a great way to start the day for sure! Adding some music to your day is always a good move 😊

Thanks for the memories..

It is yeah, the word ‘mondegreen’ in the thread title means ‘a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song.’ What a wonderfully evocative word! (What AGD isn't good for.) It sounds ancient, something someone might have said during the Battle of Hastings (when they weren't saying f*** there's an arrow in my eye).

(What AGD isn't good for.) It sounds ancient, something someone might have said during the Battle of Hastings (when they weren't saying f*** there's an arrow in my eye). Alas, nothing so venerable. The word dates from the mid fifties, thus (thanks Wikipedia): "In a 1954 essay in Harper's Magazine, Sylvia Wright described how, as a young girl, she misheard the last line of the first stanza from the seventeenth-century ballad "The Bonnie Earl O' Moray". She wrote: When I was a child, my mother used to read aloud to me from Percy's Reliques, and one of my favorite poems began, as I remember: Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, Oh, where hae ye been? They hae slain the Earl o' Moray, And Lady Mondegreen. The correct fourth line is, "And laid him on the green". Wright explained the need for a new term: The point about what I shall hereafter call mondegreens, since no one else has thought up a word for them, is that they are better than the original." Re: the Battle of Hastings - probably the most curious fact about it is that not a single artefact from said conflict has ever been found there... possibly because it may well have been fought somewhere else.
