Most people agree there are really great tracks on the White Album, but a sizable number we'd also prefer to skip. So, which tracks are your faves, and which do you skip?Faves: Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, Helter Skelter, Revolution, Goodnight, Good: Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Bungalow Bill, I'm So Tired, Piggies, Rocky Raccoon, Julia, Birthday, Yer Blues, Mother Nature's Son, Sexy Sadie, Savoy Truffle, Skip: Ob-La-Di, Wild Honey Pie, Blackbirds, Don't Pass Me By, Why Don't We Do It in the Road, I Will, Me and My Monkey, Long Long Long, Honey Pie, cry baby cry, Revolution 9 Just for fun, if you could edit it down to a single LP, how would you do it? This is my current tracklist:I tried to mix and match between slower and more upbeat tracks, with overarching themes of nature, political critique (especially Piggies and Revolution) and folk tales. 01. Back in the USSR 02. Dear Prudence 03. Happiness is a Warm Gun 04. Bungalow Bill 05. Piggies 06. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 07. Helter Skelter 08. Martha My Dear 09. Savoy Truffle 10. Revolution 11. Rocky Raccoon 12. Sexy Sadie 13. Goodnight Give it a try on this playlist

I remember rather naughtily compiling a single LP at PSF of just John and George songs. I'll try to reconstruct it later in the day.

A couple of tracks fit together well thematically but some aren't up to the same quality (Blackbirds fits with the wildlife/nature theme for example) and some themes get lost entirely (angst and unhappiness in Im So Tired, Yer Blues, etc.) I actually ninja-edited this post twice just to make some minor alterations after checking out my idea thru a youtube playlist and finding myself unhappy with a few transitions in practice. Im pretty happy with it now though.

Ah, yes, my favorite kind of thread. I've participated in this thread before on a few forums. I went with my favorites. It probably wouldn't have gone down this way - too much Paul, not enough John - but I like the selections and THE FLOW. I put in "Savoy Truffle" over a couple of others just to give George one song on each side. Hate to sacrifice "Don't Pass Me By". I know a lot of Beatles' fans delete "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", but I think it's a good song; same with "Birthday". You could flip-flop "Helter Skelter" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road"; works each way.
The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album)
Side 1 01 Back In The U.S.S.R. 02 Dear Prudence 03 Mother Nature's Son 04 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 05 Birthday 06 Savoy Truffle 07 I Will
Side 2 08 Helter Skelter 09 Why Don't We Do It In The Road 10 Happiness Is A Warm Gun 11 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 12 Cry Baby Cry 13 Blackbird 14 Good Night

Needless to say, this is fairly tongue-in-cheek. With a nod to Today! for a talk track to end side two. I've kept the 11 tracks in their original order. The fact remains I'm more of a John and George fan in Beatle Land. Side One: 1. "Dear Prudence" 2. "Glass Onion" 3. "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" 4. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" 5. "I'm So Tired" 6. "Julia" Side Two: 1. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" 2. "Sexy Sadie" 3. "Long, Long, Long" 4. "Savoy Truffle" 5. "Revolution 9"

I actually prefer the long track list. I don’t think the time went into the production of these tracks to make them stand on their own. So I prefer the variety, even if there are a few tracks I almost never listen to on this album

I haven't really played around too much with The White Album. I know I probably wouldn't cut enough to make it a single disc. Although, I'll admit, if it were a single disc, it wouldn't be the Beatles album that I play the least. Even the stuff that I wouldn't necessary cut is among some of the weakest (IMO) material they ever released (ie. Bungalow Bill, Honey Pie).
The obvious cuts are Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9. Why Don't We Do It in the Road is pure filler too, but it's short enough.

Good list, but I would replace Mother Nature and Good Night with Julia and Long, Long, Long That would leave you with a Ringo-less album! "Good Night" tugs at my heart strings.

Why Don't We Do It in the Road is pure filler too, but it's short enough. Filler? I know it's your opinion AND THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT, but didn't Paul express a lot of affection for "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" over the years? Any Beatles' nuts out there?

He might have in the Anthology book, but I really can't recall off hand.

The reason it’s a double album, is proven out by these kinds of discussions....no one can agree on which songs are the inferior ones. I’m a little shocked at some people’s omissions. And I personally love it’s big ramshackle all over the place feel. Never gets old for me, and in fact, is my favorite Beatles album, by far..I also like that it’s not as polished up as say Abbey Road, which for all it’s brilliance, comes off (to me) as a bit “too perfect.”
but for discussion sake, here are a few I could live without and why.
Don’t pass me by - Hate the fiddle, lyrics, drumming, and it’s so rudimentary as a composition. Makes most “cut it” lists i’ve seen.oh, and the piano sounded vaguely out of tune. (Sorry Ringo..really I am)
Piggies - harpsichord in spots is ok, not the whole song. I don’t like how often George wagged his finger at the masses, and criticized..
Yer Blues - just a standard 3 chord blues song, with not very inspired soloing.
Rev 9 - might have liked more at half the duration, but it’s too long and indulgent. I also don’t think it was right for John and George to create this on a weekend when Paul was away, promoting the band.
Rocky racoon - feels like it has 50 verses. And not really a clever story, blah musically. Sounds like John had no input on the lyrical content.
Everybody’s got something to hide - that’s a lot of cowbell, too long, I don’t know what it’s about (which isn’t always a dealbreaker) could’ve used a bridge, Or a breakdown section, or something.
eveything else is at least ok, most is brilliant in my opinion. So in my alternate universe, guess I would still have a 21 track album...ain’t gonna work, is it?
my21 cents!

I'd easily cut out Bungalow Bill, Piggies, Racoon, Don;t Pass me By, Why Don't We Do It, Birthday, Yer Blues, Me and My Monkey, Revolution 1 and 9.
Probably would need to still cut out a couple more to get it to one disc though. Wild Honey Pie and Happiness is a Warm Gun could probably go as well then.

My favorite album of all time to me is perfect. The only 2 songs I would remove have already been removed: "What's The New Mary Jane?" and "Not Guilty". 30 songs (and the "Hey Jude" single) of all different kinds of styles. I absolutely love the new box set with a modern remix, one cd of Esher demos and 3 cds of outtakes plus I still love disc 1 of Anthology 3. "Revolution 9" has been one of my favorites since I got the album at age 8. I also like Two Virgins which came out at about the same time. My favorite song on the White Album is either "Sexy Sadie" or "Cry Baby Cry". I have no regrets.

I first posted this at Smiley (wearing the same hard hat I'm wearing now):
Let's take another approach, one that should have Macca fans howling for my blood: This is the single-LP tribute version, dedicated to the two Beatles sadly no longer with us, all brought to a stomping conclusion by that most underrated of White Album tracks.
Side One: 1. Revolution 1 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill 5. I'm So Tired 6. Yer Blues 7. Julia 8. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Side Two: 1. Sexy Sadie 2. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey 3. Long Long Long 4. Revolution 9 5. Savoy Truffle

My favorite song on the White Album is either "Sexy Sadie" or "Cry Baby Cry". I have no regrets. "What's the New Mary Jane" is catchy, but I find the lyrics embarrassing. I also really agree with you on "Revolution 9" and Two Virgins. I like the John and Yoko sound collages, and love her own music. I never really understood the need to chop down double or triple albums, especially The Beatles. They already made a stylistically diverse single album in Revolver, anyway. Pepper has more of a uniform focus, and I think the s/t album is partly a comment on that, was well as a response to The Beatles pretending to be another band. The point of The Beatles is in asking the audience to define the band. That's why the album is self-titled, has a blank cover, and happens to be their longest, most diverse album. Making it a single LP would really make it less coherent--as if getting half a statement which builds up to nothing, or cutting out the middle of a book. Calling anything "filler" here is also just wrong by definition. They had more material than they used for even a double album, so there is no need to fill space. Tracks like "Wild Honey Pie" or "Why Don't We Do It in the Road" are meant to show different facets of the group. Songwriting and composing aren't done with one objective goal, and there's no need to feel these songs were meant to be like "Hey Jude" or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" [insert your favorite] and failed. Losing the playfulness this album has would be a shame. It's also maybe the only time they formally explored other music ("Revolution 9"), which is exciting. Spoiling the fun here, myself, I suppose But, this album offers so much that you'd lose a lot in abridging it--not least of all its actual intent.
