What a singer and performer we had in Gordon. He died 1 May 2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Age of 84.
I first knew of him when Marty Robbins released "Ribbon of Darkness" in 1965. His music wasn't marketed very well in the States. 1970 changed that.

This was the first version of this I heard. Gordon didn't need to do covers, so this must have been very special to him. Written by Ewan McColl.

First, he was a folk singer.

Then he became a favorite Country singer and writer.
When first hearing this I thought, "it's like he's channeling Bobbie Gentry.

I always thought Gordon wrote "Cotton Jenny" with Kris Kristofferson in mind.
This one is from my favorite album by Gordon, Cold On the Shoulder (1975).

His music wasn't marketed very well in the States. 1970 changed that. Indeed, 1970 and his move to Reprise Records gave him much wider visibility in the U.S.. He had a pretty good run from 1970-1976, especially.

Guess you can figure out what my second favorite Gordon album is by the songs I'm picking. Tried to post this one earlier with a nice old-timey video someone made, but he is not the sharing kind. Go look for it on YouTube. This is a more modern take video on the whale's struggles to live and be left to live.
Something that floored me from back in the days when producers made whale's singing records. You remember those? Judy Collins, Crosby, everybody was jumping on the whale ships. From his folk period, with some sound effects added by the video artist.

a song for Gordon. Can't hear it without thinking of him. A life well lived, but he entered some dangerous ports along the way.
