To expand: bands and artists, mainline and cult, that people rave about but leave you at best cold and can actually provoke revulsion. To kick things off... The Smiths/Morrissey... U2... Big Star... Jobriath... Dylan (post 1968)... Lady Gaga... Almost every instrumental surf band of the 60s (sorry, Dom)...
Discuss.

As Beach Boys Fan once said, tastes differ. Interesting you mention U2 in your list. I love U2--it's Coldplay that has me worried. I like "Clocks" but the rest is one-ear-in-other-ear-out stuff. Kendrick Lamar is one of a number of hardcore rappers I've been encouraged to explore as the cream of the crop. Very impressive I'll admit but wasted on me.

Prince. I’ve tried many of his albums, it just doesn’t click for me.

Springsteen in E-Street Band mode (I love his solo album Nebraska). Something that worries me slightly about this topic is that it's not a million miles away from this one.

Good call AGD: I’m trying to decide whether Morrisey or Bono is the bigger prick.
I’ve always strongly disliked Elvis Costello, who seems to be a darling of some critics.

U2 is a very polarizing band, likely due to Bono. Most people I know either love U2 or have a vicious hatred for them. To be honest, I don't really get either side. I think their 80s output was very good, but tends to be a little overrated. And I think much of their output over the last quarter century has been extremely inconsistent.

Radiohead. I do not get the love for that band.

Radiohead. I do not get the love for that band. I remember people were comparing them to Pink Floyd when OK Computer was released in 1997. I actually bought that album, and I do like the three good songs on it. But, the comparison to Pink Floyd was about as silly as the comparison of Oasis (another band I don't get) to The Beatles.

The first time I heard "Yellow" I was like, what is this garbage? People actually like this? And then it became a massive hit and it was everywhere, and my vehement dislike of that song closed my mind to anything they did after it. I felt like the lone hater in a sea of Coldplay enthusiasts. But to me, everything about them feels... manipulative.

No comparison. Just, wow. I like the song Creep, but since it's such a blatant rip off of The Air That I Breathe, I can't give Radiohead credit for that.

I kinda liked Creep when it came out in the summer of 1993, but I don't think it holds up to repeat listens.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - They've kind of faded away again but at one point every music critic seemed to fawn over everything they did.
The Who - Always my least favourite of the big 60s bands and everything I've heard post Who's Next is outright shit.
U2 - Managed to put together a few good years in the mid to late 80s and have coasted off that and absurd media hype ever since.
About 99.9% of any punk band that ever existed - You can only play the basics of an instrument? And that is meant to make me like you, how?

I find metal boring, Really boring. Doesn't touch me at all. Other than that there are a lot of bands who I can take (or just about) in greatest hits form - CSN, Queen (only just), Police, Smiths, Maybe The Who. Maybe. Not sure I can go even that far with U2.
Never got the love for The Clash, even before liking them became the thing to do.
Tubular Bells - once I get over the Exorcist bit, it does nothing for me, especially that neanderthal crap. Heaven knows I've tried over the space of three copies. What the hell.

Good call AGD: I’m trying to decide whether Morrisey or Bono is the bigger prick. More tea, vicar? I have no problem at all with Bono. He's a lovely lad and has given me some wonderful moments in the past few years since being turned on to U2.
